Yung male African elephants shw calmer behavir when lder, mre experienced male elephants are arund, accrding t a new study. Experts say the discvery culd help t prtect bth elephants and humans.
Researchers frm the University f Exeter, in suth-west England and the charity Elephants fr Africa studied the behavir f 281 male elephants (knwn as bulls) in Btswana’s Makgadikgadi Pans Natinal Park ver three years. At between 12 and 15 years ld, bull elephants leave the herd where they grw up and then spend much f their time either alne r with ther males. Females, in cntrast, stay with the herd they were brn int.
T see if there were patterns in the way males behaved after leaving their herd, the researchers divided them int fur grups: tw grups f adlescents (aged 10-15 r 16-20 years ld), and tw grups f adults (aged 21-25 r ver 26 years ld). They fund that the yunger males were mre likely t be aggressive twards nn-elephant targets, such as ther animals and vehicles when there were fewer lder adult bulls t mix with. Cnnie Allen frm the University f Exeter, wh led the study, suggests this may be because the yung bulls n their wn are less experienced at identifying threats t their safety. That means they are mre likely t becme fearful, which makes them attack.
Allen said the research revealed an imprtant rle fr lder male elephants wh have ften been thught f as nt very useful in elephant sciety. This mistaken belief has led wildlife authrities t allw sme hunting f lder males, reducing their numbers and their pssible calming influence n yunger bulls. In the area where the elephants live, 71% f peple said they felt that elephants threaten their safety. The research suggests that having mre lder males culd help with the prblem.
17.Hw d bull elephants differ frm female elephants?
    A.They leave the herd.
    B.They stay with the herd.
    C.They behave vilently.
    D.They are mre independent.
18.Why d yunger male elephants attack peple r vehicles?
A.They prtect their herd frm danger.
    B.They are t yung t recgnize threats.
C.They are frightened by nn-elephant targets.
D.They are nt prtected well by lder elephants.
19.Which statement will the authr prbably agree with?
A.Older male elephants are less imprtant in elephant sciety.
B.It is reasnable t allw sme hunting f lder male elephants.
C.Older male elephants can help reduce elephant attack.
D.Peple’s safety is threatened by lder male elephants.
20.What is the best title fr the text?
    A.Old Elephants Threaten Peple’s Safety
B.Old Male Elephants Keep Yung Calm
    C.Yung Elephants Are Mre Aggressive
D.Bull Elephants Tend t Leave the Herd
Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) are indicating that accurate quake frecasting may be attainable, thereby casting dubt n the cnventinal wisdm that such an accmplishment is beynd ur capabilities. Researchers at the University f Texas, Austin, created an AI mdel that, during a test run in China, crrectly frecasted apprximately 70 percent f earthquakes with a ne-week warning and ffered reliable assessments f their ptential intensity.
The researchers attribute their technique’s effectiveness t its reliance n a straightfrward machine leaning framewrk. The AI was prvided with a set f statistical features based n the team’s knwledge f earthquake physics, and then instructed t train itself using a five-year database f earthquake recrdings. Once trained, the AI ffered predictins by detecting early indicatrs f quakes hidden within the planet’s lw-frequency rumbles (隆隆声).
The prject marks a substantial breakthrugh in the explratin f AI fr anticipating seismic (地震) events. Accrding t Alexandrs Savvaidis, a senir researcher heading the Texas Seismlgical Netwrk, “Seismic ccurrences strike withut warning, ften in the blink f an eye. Yur readiness is all yu can influence. Achieving a 70% predictin rate is a cnsiderable achievement that culd significantly restrict the impact f earthquakes, reducing bth the financial burden and lss f life, and the ptential t remarkably imprve earthquake preparatin wrldwide.”
Althugh the effectiveness f this methd in different regins remains uncertain, the researchers believe that their AI mdel has the ptential t enhance predictin accuracy when carried ut in regins equipped with dependable seismic mnitring facilities. Their next step is t test artificial intelligence in Texas, where the University f Texas’s TexNet perates a netwrk f 300 earthquake statins and ver six years’ wrth f cntinuus recrds, making it an ideal lcatin fr these purpses.
Ultimately, the authrs aim t cmbine the system with physics-based mdels. This apprach culd be particularly valuable in areas characterized by limited r inadequate data. “That may be a lng way ff, but many advances such as this ne, taken tgether, are what mves science frward,” cncludes Sctt Tinker, the bureau’s directr.
21.Hw des the AI predict seismic events?
A.It identifies data frm the satellites.
B.It analyzes backgrund sunds in the Earth.
C.It mdels data based n earthquake recrdings.

24.Which wrds can best describe the earthquake-predicting technlgy?
    A.Stable but utdated.B.Effective but cstly.
    C.Ptential and ecnmical.D.Pineering and prmising.
As Earth’s climate has been warming, the risk f urban flding has grwn, t. Building pnds t cllect rainwater can limit that flding. But in sme places, thse pnds may actually add t glbal warming by releasing greenhuse gases int the air. That’s the finding f a new study.
Earth’s changing water cycle has made many cities and their suburbs wetter. These urban areas have a limited ability t sak up rainwater. Flds hit rads, cncrete parking lts, buildings and ther features. Pnds can cllect the water that runs ff. But where nature hasn’t prvided enugh pnds, cities have been building them. Flrida alne has built abut 76,000 such strmwater pnds. Many ther areas als rely heavily n these pnds fr fld cntrl, ntes Audrey Geckner. She’s a graduate student at the University f Flrida in Gainesville and lead authr f the new study.
Recently, her team cmpared the uptake and later release f carbn-based gases at five strmwater pnds. All were in Manatee Cunty, Fla. That’s n the state’s central west cast. Alng with a lab technician, Geckner cllected samples frm the bttms f the pnds. The samples had a layer f muck (淤泥) abve sandy material. Older pnds had deeper layers f muck. Back at the lab, the research team measured the carbn-based cmpunds in the samples.
In general, lder pnds released less f these carbn-based chemicals int the air than yunger pnds did. At the same time, “the rate that lder pnds were string carbn in the sediment (沉积物) increased,” Geckner says. In cntrast, yunger pnds seem t emit (排放) mre carbn than they stred away.
“It’s just really imprtant t take int accunt hw these human-made ecsystems are playing a part in the envirnment,” she cncludes. Sme pnds mstly stre carbn, it seems. Others mstly release it int the air. Her team shared its findings n March 9 in Cmmunicatins Earth & Envirnment.
25.What is the finding f the new research?
    A.Earth’s climate is warming.
    B.Urban flding is grwing.

A.Older pnds stre less carbn.B.Yunger pnds cause less harm.
C.Older pnds cause less harm.D.Yunger pnds stre mre carbn.
28.What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A.Muck and SedimentB.Pnds and Water Cycle
    C.Pnds and ClimateD.Rainwater and Envirnment
Imagine getting ready fr bed, brushing yur teeth, setting yur alarm and then putting a device n yur head that allws yu t cntrl yur dreams. It might sund like smething unfeasible, but it’s the real-life prmise f a new futuristic-lking headband called Hal, at present in develpment by US tech cmpany Prphetic.
Expected t be released in 2025, Hal aims t allw yu t have mre lucid dreams (清醒梦). In sme cases, yu might als exercise a degree f cntrl ver what happens in these dreams, perhaps in ways that benefit yur waking life, such as slving wrk prblems, practicing guitar and mre.
Earlier research has shwn lucid dreams culd be used fr real-life benefits. Fr example, ne study carried ut by researchers at the University f Bern, Switzerland shwed that participants wh practised casting cins int a cup in their lucid dreams shwed superir perfrmance the next day.
The team behind Hal are using technlgies like EEG (脑电图) t cllect vast amunts f brain data frm vlunteers experiencing lucid dreams. The idea is t build a detailed map f what’s happening in the brain during different types f lucid dreams. This infrmatin will be key fr the secnd main area f investigatin, which invlves using TUS (delivered via the headband) t cntrl brain activity. TUS, a nn-invasive brain stimulatin technique, can change brain functin by using high-frequency sund.
“It’s seemingly true that the sund stimulatin culd cntribute t the high-frequency brain activity that’s assciated with lucidity,” says Prfessr Mark Blagrve, a sleep scientist based at Swansea University. “Sund stimulatin has been used t cause lw-frequency slw waves in slw wave sleep, s the methd suggested is believable.”
Hwever, TUS is a relatively new apprach t brain stimulatin and it’s nt entirely clear what the lng-term results f stimulating yur brain with high-frequency sunds might be. Mrever, sme sleep scientists believe dreams have basic functins, including prcessing emtinal experiences. By using a device t change the nature f yur dreams, maybe yu risk interrupting the usual purpse f yur dreams.

That means they are mre likely t becme fearful, which makes them attack.(埃克塞特大学的康妮·艾伦领导了这项研究,她认为,这可能是因为小公象在识别自身安全威胁方面缺乏经验。
根据最后一段第二句“This mistaken belief has led wildlife authrities t allw sme hunting f lder males, reducing their numbers and their pssible calming influence n yunger bulls.
通读全文,尤其是第一段第一句“Yung male African elephants shw calmer behavir when lder, mre experienced male elephants are arund, accrding t a new study.

根据第二段“Pnds can cllect the water that runs ff. But where nature hasn’t prvided enugh pnds, cities have been building them.(池塘可以收集流走的水。 故选A。
根据第四段“In general, lder pnds released less f these carbn-based chemicals int the air than yunger pnds did.(一般来说,老旧池塘向空气中释放的这些碳基化学物质比较新建的池塘少)”可知,老旧池塘释放的碳基化学物质更少,即更少的温室气体,因此对地球的伤害更少些。故选C。
根据第一段“But in sme places, thse pnds may actually add t glbal warming by releasing greenhuse gases int the: air. That’s the finding f a new study(但在某些地方,这些池塘实际上可能会向空气中释放温室气体,从而加剧全球变暖。

故将But改为Then/And。
故将which改为what。
故在us后加a。
    54.attending 55.whse 56.imaginatins
