I switched t a flip phne. It vastly imprved my life. I felt empty and frustrated at hw much time I spent n my smartphne. S I spent the last five years steadily stripping my phne dwn t the basics. Scial media was the first t g, then email, then news apps, and then even internet brwsers.
I lng cnsidered switching t a flip phne, but I always fund an excuse t stay. Ultimately it was tw f my students, 15- and 18-year-ld sisters, wh pushed me ver the edge. Wrd spread arund schl that they had bught flip phnes. If they were brave enugh t take the plunge, I culd, t. I spent $9 n a flip phne, plus $120 fr a year f unlimited talk and text n a new number. Fr the last five mnths, I haven't carried a smartphne with me, just my flip phne.
This is the charming, rmantic side f wning a flip phne: mre cnversatins, mre eye cntact, mre cnnectin. The separatin between wrk and life is much mre nticeable. I dn't verthink wrk emails all day, since I n lnger carry my wrk email in my pcket. I am living mre like my creative, curius, phne-free children.
This all sunds wnderful because it is wnderful. And nw it's cnfessin time: I still have my smartphne. As it turns ut, ur addictin t smartphnes is nt just n an individual level. Intentinally r nt, we have built structures that depend upn smartphne access, making it an essential feature f mdern life. While mst f the flip phne incnveniences are charming, sme f them are s frustrating that they make yu want t pull yur hair ut.
Despite that, I will cntinue t use a flip phne as my primary phne s I dn't have t carry a smartphne with me. And I will cntinue t evangelize fr it. I hpe many thers get flip phnes. We will all be better fr it. If nthing else, it'll be nice t have mre peple t talk t in the grcery line.
    24. What ultimately caused the authr t switch t a flip phne?
    A. Disturbance f scial media. B. Inspiratin frm his students.
    C. Time verspent n his smartphne. D. Negative feelings t smartphnes.

A recent study fund that peple tend t turn dwn ffers f “free mney,” as well as unusually high salaries r suspiciusly cheap services, because they seem “t gd t be true.”
In the initial experiment, nearly 40 percent f participants ate a ckie ffered freely — cmpared with abut 20 percent f thse ffered $5 as well. Nine further experiments, invlving mre than 4,000 participants, used nline questinnaires t shw ther cases including being ffered mney t accept a ride hme, extremely high wages and surprisingly cheap flights. In each case, past a certain pint, higher ptential mnetary gain reduced participants' likelihd f accepting the ffer.
The lead authr Vnasch says it illustrates that cntrary t the “standard ecnmic mdel,” which suppses humans always seek t maximize gains, transactins need t als be understd as scial interactins between peple trying t understand each ther's minds. If smene seems t break accepted rules, such as self-interest, withut any explanatin, we assume they have hidden mtives and infer there will be “phantm csts” — imagined cnsequences that reduce what Vnasch calls an ffer's “psychlgical value.”
Study lead Vnasch explains the research shws the ppsite f the "standard ecnmic mdel", where peple always want mre. He says we shuld view transactins as scial interactins. Unexpected actins withut reasns might lead us t think f hidden mtives and imagined bad utcmes, called "phantm csts," lwering an ffer's value.
Future factrs may affect decisins. “Understanding that thers' perceived vergenersity may put us in their debt culd als explain peple's reluctance,” says Rachel McCly, a psychlgist. The researchers als shwed hw t mitigate the effect: simply prvide a reasn. The “cheap flights” experiment included a cnditin where the seats were very uncmfrtable. Vnasch says “uncmfrtable seats made peple mre willing t take them because f sufficient explanatin.”
The scientists are experimenting with whether phantm csts influence humans' interactins with rbts and artificial intelligence. “If AI is verly generus, will peple imagine phantm csts?” Vnasch says. “Peple tend t treat AI as if they have a mind, wh bviusly dn't.”
    28. What can be inferred frm Paragraph 2?
    A. Participants preferred higher rewards.B. Abut 40% rejected free ckie.
    C. Higher gains lwered acceptance rate eventually.D. 20% accepted ckie with $5 ffer.
    29. Which f the fllwing can best demnstrate the “standard ecnmic mdel”?
    A. Buy an apartment at a peak price.
    B. Pay fr a wardrbe withut a bargain.
    C. Cntain the desire t cnsume at a sale.
    D. Purchase a fancy cat at a 40% discunt.
    30. What des the underlined wrd “mitigate ”in paragraph 5 prbably mean?
    A. assess B. reduce C. highlight D. reinfrce
    31. What is the scientists' current research fcus?
    A. Reducing phantm csts in human-AI interactins.
    B. AI design's effect n human perceptin f phantm csts.
    C. Phantm csts' influence n human-rbt/AI interactins.
    D. The pint where phantm csts affect human-AI interactins.

Fr thusands f years, the Taklamakan Desert preserved mre than the bdies f thse buried in China's Tarim Basin. Archaelgists fund pebble-sized pieces f a yellwish substance: the wrld's ldest cheese, scattering arund the necks f sme bdies in Xiahe, a Brnze Age cemetery. A recent study, published in Cell, analyzes the DNA f this ancient dairy, shedding light n hw it was made and hw its prductin spread.
In a previus study, researchers tk tiny samples f the 3,500-year-ld cheese attached t the mummies necks. An analysis f prteins in thse bits unveiled the presence f a micrbe(发酵菌)used t prduce a type f fermented cheese called kefir.
“That was really amazing”, says QiameiFu, a scientist at Chinese Academy f Sciences in Beijing. Having wrked with ancient human DNA, she wanted t study the micrbe's DNA. Hwever, extracting cmplete DNA frm such ancient samples prved challenging, as it brke dwn ver time and mixed with genetic infrmatin frm the envirnment. In 2014, Fu began designing special mlecules (分子) that culd efficiently capture the micrbe's ancient DNA frm the cheese. After years f wrk, Fu and her team managed t recnstruct 92 percent f the ancient micrbe's DNA.
Frm this micrbe's DNA, the team culd explre the histry f the cheese's prductin. Kefir is made by mixing milk with an existing micrbe, and as it spread, s did the micrbes used t make it. By cmparing the DNA frm the Xiahe cheese with that f thers, tw branches emerged: ne frm Eurpe and the Pacific Islands, and the ther frm Tibet and East Asia, which suggests a pssible rute fr kefir's spread frm Xinjiang t East Asia, pssibly thrugh migratin.
The DNA analysis als pinted t the interactin f ancient peples. It uncvered that samples frm cws and gats were fund. Interestingly, the gat DNA resembled that f ther ancient Central Asian gats, suggesting the mixing f ppulatin in Xinjiang with ther Brnze Age ppulatins. Researchers anticipate that further analysis f micrbes in the cheese, alng with ther bilgical samples, culd prvide deeper insights int interactins between ancient ppulatins.
    32. What can be learned accrding t the article?
    A. Xinjiang was famus fr ld cheese.
    B. Xiahe Cemetery is the ldest in the wrld.
    C. Archaelgists discvered 3,500-year-ld cheese in the Tarim Basin.
    D. The prductin methd and spread can be figured ut in DNA f cheese .
    33. What’s the main idea f paragraph 2?
    A. presence f prteinB. histry f mummies
    C. discvery f kefir-making micrbeD. principle f micrbe
    34. What challenge did Qiamei Fu face when studying the DNA f the micrbes in the cheese?
    A. The prtein analysis f the cheese failed.
    B. Cmplete DNA frm the cheese culdn’t be extracted.
    C. Prductin methd f the cheese culdn’t be determined.
    D. Other bilgical samples related t the cheese culdn’t be fund.
    35. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
    A. Explring the Taklamakan Desert: A DNA Jurney f Ancient Cheese
    B. Ancient Cheese frm the Tarim Basin: Revealing Ancient Human Life

Laynie had her wn watering can s she culd "help" me in the garden. One day, after everything was watered, she ran t the fence and started sprinkling water n anther spt. I walked ver and saw a fresh patch f dirt near the fence.
"Did yu plant smething there?" I asked.
"Yes," she said. "I'm grwing a pencil. My purple pencil gt t small, s I planted it."
    "What? But, Laynie …"
I shuld have explained things right then, but I just muttered, "Uh... I never grew ne befre."
Later I gt what seemed like a great idea. I dug up Laynie's pencil and "planted" a brand-new purple pencil. Laynie was really excited when she saw it. "My pencil grew!" she shuted.
A few days later, Laynie was watering n the same spt. Tw days later, new crayns stuck their pinty little heads ut, thanks t me. Laynie jumped up and dwn and yelled,
"They lk like flwers!" She "picked" them and ran int the huse.
Next, Laynie grew an adult bear dll frm a tiny ne, a sup spn frm a teaspn, and a hand mirrr frm a piece f glass. When she claimed that she had grwn these things, I just kept my muth shut! Actually, it was fun trying t think f what shuld grw frm Laynie's seeds. And it was cl t see her get excited.
One day I saw her patting dwn sme dirt near the fence again, s I knew she'd just planted smething. My heart drpped t my feet when she asked, "Hw lng des it take t grw a gldfish, Brad?" I culdn't speak.
"Nt lng, I bet!" said Laynie. She knelt dwn t whisper "Grw, Mlly. Grw!" befre she skipped back t the huse.
