A new reprt by the United Natins estimates(估计)17% f all the fd prduced arund the wrld gets wasted each year. That means 931 millin tns f wasted fd! Mst f the waste(61%)happens in husehlds, while fd services such as restaurants and cafes make up 26 percent and shps make up 13 percent, the UN fund.
“Many cuntries haven’t yet knwn hw much fd they have wasted, s they dn’t understand hw serius the prblem is,” said Clementine O’Cnnr, frm the UN Envirnment Prgram and c-authr f the reprt.
Fd waste is als bad fr the envirnment. The UN Envirnment Prgram estimates that wasted fd is respnsible fr 8—10% f glbal greenhuse gas emissins(排放物). If fd waste were a cuntry, it wuld have the third highest greenhuse gas emissins in the wrld, after nly the US and China.
The reprt fund fd waste in hmes wasn’t limited t higher incme cuntries such as the US, the UK and Australia. Fd waste researcher, Prfessr Brian Re, frm Ohi State University in the US, said fd was als smetimes wasted in pr cuntries because they didn’t have refrigeratrs.
Prfessr Brian Re said husehld and cultural habits culd lead t waste at hme, including “buy ne, get ne free” deals.
