In the study,researchers had twenty wmen wear tw pairs f shes with three inch heels,ne with a narrw heel and the ther with a thick ne.The scientists cmpared hw much pressure was put n the wmens knees by bth types f shes.The wmen als walked bareft t test nrmal pressure.The scientists fund that bth types f shesappliedequal amunts f pressure t the knees.Cmpared with walking bareft,the heels increased pressure n the inside f the knee by 26 percent.Increased pressure n the knee eventually leads t arthritis,experts say.
The idea that high heels are bad fr yur health isnt new—scientists have warned wmen fr years that they cntribute t prblems ranging frm crns t hammer tes,tendnitis,knee pain,sprained(扭伤)ankles and back prblems.But in 1998,Kerrigan and a team f Harvard researchers were the first t link high heels and knee stearthritis,a painful jint disease that destrys cartilage(软骨)surrunding the knee.The first study lked nly at stilett heels,and Kerrigan said she wanted t study the chunky highheeled shes she nticed many wmen wearing.“This study cnfirms what we all intuitively(直觉地)knw that highheeled shes f any kind are nt gd fr ur health,” said Dr.Glem Pfeffer,a San Francisc dctr and member f the American Academy f Orthpaedic Surgens wh was nt cnnected t the study.
