    The Austrian cmpser, Schubert, was brn in Vienna. His father, a schlmaster, was his first music teacher. When he was 11, he was frtunate in being chsen t ne f the Vienna By’s singing grup. There he received a free general educatin as well as music teaching. He began t cmpse in these years, mstly instrumental r rchestral cmpsitins, but als a few sngs. He spent mre time in cvering sheets f paper with these cmpsitins than at his ther studies.
    After he left the singing grup, Schubert became a schlmaster t avid being sent int the army, and he taught at his father’s schl fr 3 years. When nly 17, he wrte his first great sng, and during the next 2 years he wrte many f his finest sngs. After his 3 years’ teaching, he lived with varius friends, all as penniless as himself, cmpsing all the time, smetimes writing eight sngs in a day, and even sleeping in his glasses in case he might have an idea fr a sng during the night. Althugh he hated teaching, he earned sme mney by giving pian lessns.
    Schubert never became widely famus utside Vienna during his life. It was late in his shrt life, and nly after much persuasin, that publishers began t print and sell sme f his cmpsitins; and Schubert received very little mney fr these. He had been able t be happy and free t cmpse, thugh extremely pr. But a clud f sadness hung ver in his late years. In 1827 he wrte his sng-cycle fr vice and pian. The Winter Jurney and its sadness shw his wn state f mind. In the autumn f 1828 he fell ill fr the secnd time in his life and died. Almst all his last wrds were f Beethven, whm he lved and admired abve all ther cmpsers. He was buried beside him.
    Althugh Schubert died when nly 32, he wrte a great amunt f music. He had little academic training but a very sure musical talent. Much f his finest wrk he never heard perfrmed.

    Hspitals emply many therapeutic (治疗的) methds, such as medicatin (药物治疗), massage (按摩) therapy and music therapy. And music therapy is grwing in ppularity.
    Sandra Siedliecki is a Senir Scientist at the Nursing Institute f Cleveland Clinic in Ohi. She says music is a lw-cst treatment.     Dr. Linda Chlan was studying smething different. She was nt interested in patients’ pain, but instead, their anxiety. She spent a lt f time with peple wh were in the hspital because their anxiety was s great that they culdn’t breathe. Peple with this cnditin ften have t use breathing machines. Dr. Chlan said that the machines smetimes did little t imprve their cnditin. Smetimes they even made things wrse. The patients wuld becme mre anxius. Dr. Chlan let nurses tell patients that music was a gd chice t make them feel better. They als placed signs near the patients’ beds—Listen t yur music at least twice a day. The peple wh listened t music had a reductin (减少) in the amunt f medicatin they received. In additin, their anxiety reduced by abut 36 percent.
