    Unit 5 Music B

    1. On a dark winter day in 1896, Sergei Prokofiev sat by a piano next to his mother. She was helping him compose his first piece of music. Sergei was only five years old.
He had overheard his parents discussing a terrible famine(饥荒) in India. The picture Sergei had of those hungry people in his mind caused him to write a story, in the form of musical notes. Sergei could not read music, so he picked out a tune on the piano keys, and his mother recorded the notes. Sergei titled it "Indian Gallop".
Sergei's mother began giving him piano lessons for 20 minutes a day, and his ability grew quickly. She had a great love for music, too, and Sergei often lay awake in bed at night and listened to her play the piano.
Sergei's parents found a famous music teacher for him. The teacher shouted at Sergei when he didn't practice reading and playing music. Sergei later wrote, "I wanted to compose great musical plays, and instead I was given all sorts of boring tasks." Yet he persisted with his studies and grew up to be a great composer.
In 1936 a children's theatre asked Sergei to write music that would teach children about different instruments. He was happy and wrote the piece in a week, calling it Peter and the Wolf.
Sergei's Peter and the Wolf was enjoyed by children as well as adults. The first time Sergei played the piece on the piano, the children listening to it loved it so much that they made him play the ending three extra times. He was excited.
Today Sergei Prokofiev is remembered not only for his contributions(贡献) to classical music, but also for his sense of fun.
(1).When he was five, Sergei _______.

    A.Hurried up.
    B.Put up with.
    C.Continued with.
    D.Walked away from.

    2.    How do young people learn best? This is something I think about a lot when teaching foreign languages to young people. I often find that traditional teaching methods are neither always effective nor interesting for young brains to learn a foreign language.
After moving to southern Italy I was lucky to have the chance to run a private course teaching English to under 7-year-olds. I was aware that children liked to sing and enjoyed games so I wanted to use these tools to help my students develop English conversation skills. I found some fun and easy songs online, which they loved. I also found the English versions of some nursery rhymes they recognized. All of them were very interesting and helpful but students could still not have a basic conversation in English.
I knew I wanted these guys to be fully immersed in the language I was teaching and I also wanted them to speak it. I was keen to give 90% of my lessons in English but I knew it'd be difficult to get them to speak in a foreign language they had little or zero exposure to outside our lessons, so I had to come up with a simple yet effective plan.
One day I decided to prepare a simple dialogue in English, so that I could get them to sing and chant(有节奏地反复地唱) it, rather than simply getting students to repeat the phrases. I discovered that chanting some conversational sentences was the way to get students to speak in English — it worked!
So when teaching English to young people now, I encourage them to make up their own songs and chants to help them remember expressions or complex sentences.
    1. What is the passage mainly talking about?
    A. How to make young learners like a foreign language.
    B. How to teach foreign languages to young people.
    C. How to run a private course in southern Italy.
    D. How to help the younger children with studies.
    2. What does the underlined word "immersed" mean in the 3rd paragraph?
    A. Amused. B. Buried. C. Related. D. Informed.
    3. How did the author feel when faced with difficulty in teaching?
    A. He found it impossible to teach children with little English.
    B. He tried to be a patient and responsible teacher.
    C. He realized he was unable to finish the task of teaching.
    D. He actually felt kind of discouraged and disappointed.
    4. What can be inferred from the passage?
    A. Mistakes are an important part of education.
    B. A teacher can never tell where his influence stops.
    C. A teacher should understand his students' needs.
    D. Confidence is the first step on the way to success.
    3.    Rock and roll music developed in the United States in the early 1950's. It was based on the music called rhythm and blues that was performed by African-American musicians.
Early rock and roll singers developed their own kinds of music. Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, the Beach Boys, and Bob Dylan were the most popular rock and roll musicians in the early 1960's. All were Americans. Then, in 1964, a new rock and roll group from Britain invaded America: the Beatles.
Some people say the Beatles' music shook America like an earthquake. The Beatles changed rock and roll forever. Their early songs were influenced by American rock and roll musicians, including Chuck Berry. But the Beatles looked different and sounded different from any other musical groups before them.
The Beatles released their first album in the United States in 1964, when all of the top five records in America were by the Beatles. In 1967, they released an album called Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. It was one of the first "concept" albums. That is, all the songs were linked by a common story or idea.
The popularity of the Beatles led the way for more rock and roll bands from Britain to become popular in America. The Rolling Stones was the most important of these bands. The Rolling Stones is one of the few groups from the 1960's that is still performing and recording today. In 1965, the group recorded one of its most famous songs, Satisfaction.
The musical instrument most linked to rock and roll is the guitar. Experts say Jimi Hendrix was one of the most influential guitar players in rock and roll during the late 1960's. His Purple Haze was liked by many people.
By the 1970, s,rock and roll music became known as rock music. It expanded into many new forms. For example, there were country rock, hard rock, acid rock, heavy metal rock, punk rock, jazz rock and glitter rock.
In the middle 1970's, experts said that rock music regained some of the energy of early rock and roll. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band became popular with their album Born to Run. Springsteen's music was like the lively rock and roll music of the early 1960's. Many of his songs were about social issues. He sang about the effects of unemployment and the war in Vietnam.

    4. Music can make us feel happy or peaceful, energize us to dance, or move us to tears. As an orchestra conductor, Amy Anderson brings music to life, allowing people to experience the feelings that music can bring.
Anderson fell in love with music as a child. She started to sing in school choirs in the first grade, began studying the piano at 7, and started composing at 9. Her school had no orchestra, but she bought many recordings of great orchestras and conductors and listened to them for hours on end.
During a concert, the audience see the back of a conductor and the arm movements she or he uses to lead the orchestra. What the audience do not see is all the work the conductor has done beforehand to prepare for the performance.
Months before a concert, Anderson studies a piece of music by playing it on the piano. She decides how she wants each part to sound. Should it be fast or slow? Loud or soft? She reads about the composer's life and reviews historical events that would have influenced the composer. Her goal is to recreate the music as the composer wanted.
While conducting, Anderson uses her whole body to express how the music should sound and feel. Her movements are dramatic(激动人心的) when the music is energetic and gentle when the music is peaceful.
Each instrument makes a special sound. Although it is not necessary for conductors to know how to play all of the instruments, they must be familiar with the sound of each instrument in the orchestra. To help young musicians understand how to play the music, Anderson will tell them to imagine a calm, leisurely walk or a ship being tossed by waves.
Anderson has seen the audience at her concerts applauding(鼓掌) together in rhythm. She is happy to know that she and the musicians have brought joy into ordinary days.

(3).By saying the underlined part, Anderson probably wants to show that _______.
    A.bad performance may cause danger
    B.music can express people's feelings
C.energetic music needs to be played dramatically
D.it is not easy to become an orchestra conductor
(4).Which of the following can be used as the best title of the passage?

Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2:.30 a. m. When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.
I walked to the door and knocked, “Just a minute,” answered a weak, elderly voice.
After a long time, the door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase.
I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly towards the car.
She kept thanking me for my kindness. “It’s nothing, ”I told her. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated.”
“Oh,you’re such a good man,”she said. When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, “Could you drive through downtown?”
“It's not the shortest way,” I answered quickly.
“Oh, I’m in no hurry,”she said. “I’m on my way to a hospice (临终医院).I don’t have any family left. The doctor says I don't have very long.”
I quietly reached over and shut off the meter.(计价器). For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.
Sometimes she'd ask me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.
At dawn, she suddenly said, “I’m tired. Let's go now.” We drove in silence to the address she had given.
“How much do I owe you?” she asked.
    “Nothing,”I said.
“You have to make a living,” she answered. “Oh, there are other passengers, I answered. She said thanks to me, but she looked so sad.

It helped me not only in music, but in all aspects of life可知,它不仅在音乐方面对作者有帮助,而且渗透进生活的方方面面。
7.答案:①to raise ②cultures ③Actually ④adviser ⑤In ⑥be presented ⑦the ⑧arranged ⑨What ⑩ourselves
故填to raise。
故填In。
present是谓语动词, 与主语the music之间是被动关系, 又因为前有can't, 故填be presented。
be the same为固定搭配, 意为"一样"。故填the。
    8.答案:Paragraph 1 :
Almost without thinking,I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly. Before the woman left for the; hospice, I said to her, “My mother treated everyone kindly and she is a person of great kindness, but she passed away years ago. You are like my mother.” The woman said, “Thank you. If you want to visit me. I’ll tell you my story.” Then the weak woman left, after which I drove the taxi to go home.
    Paragraph 2:
The next day,I was on my way to visit her. The old woman told me that she used to be a millionaire. She became immersed in making money. She was the owner of a particular building we saw last night. But she neglected her family. Her only son died one year ago because of cancer. She sold everything to save him* but failed. How sad! At Iasi, the old woman said to me, “Life is short, but please be in no hurry. Though everyone has to earn money to make a living, always remember that family is the most important thing to you.” After a long silence in the darkness, I nodded hard.
    9.答案:
    Dear Alice,
I'm glad to receive your e-mail and thank you for your trusting me.
As we know, stage fright is a common phenomenon. Many people, even the most confident performers, can suffer from stage fright. So don't worry—you can overcome it by relaxing your body and mind. Here I'll give you a few tips.
Firstly, arrive early. Showing up early can calm yourself down and make you feel more at ease. Secondly, talk to members of the audience. It will make you see that the audience are ordinary and friendly people and you'll get more comfortable. Last but not least, slow down. Most public speakers may be speaking fast because they're nervous and want to finish the speech or presentation sooner, but this will actually make it harder.
I hope my suggestions will be of some help to you. I believe you can make it.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
