The paching(偷猎), r illegal killing, f rhins(犀牛)in Suth Africa is grwing wrse each year. The gvernment recently reprted that a recrd number f rhins were pached in 2014, a year which had mre rhin killings in Suth Africa than ever befre.
The Wrld Wildlife Fund fr Nature, r WWF, says abut 20,000 rhins live in Suth Africa. That is mre than 80 percent f the rhins in the wrld. Edna Mlewa, Suth Africa’s Envirnment Minister, says, “During 2014, we are sad t say this, 1, 215 rhins were killed. This is a rise in the number f pached rhins frm 1,004 in 2013 and indeed very wrrying.”
The animals are hunted fr their hrns(角). Many peple in Asia believe the hrn has curing pwer, which drives pachers, at all csts, mad fr mre hrns. But there is n scientific evidence fr this belief. The hrn is made f keratin. That is the same thing as human hair, fingernails and tenails.
Ms. Mlewa says 386 suspected pachers were arrested last year, an increase frm the year befre. But rhin prtectin wrkers say pachers ften g unpunished after arrest. Suth Africa’s legal system is ineffective, Ms. Mlewa says mre needs t be dne and Suth Africa is taking strng measures t prtect rhins. The effrts include mving sme f the animals t secret places in neighbring cuntries. “Nw apprximately 100 rhins have been mved t neighbring states in the SADC regin during 2014 and 200 mre rhins will be ved this year,” says Mlewa.
J Shaw, the rhin prgram manager f the WWF, says, “We’re talking abut a lss f a hundred rhins a mnth, r mre than three a day. We really need t see effective actin nt just at a natinal level but internatinally.” She says fficials shuld find the criminal grups respnsible fr the paching and punish them. Gvernment fficials are t meet in Btswana in March at the Inter-gvernmental Cnference n Illegal Wildlife Trade.
