It’s easy t d easy things, but they dn’t carry the challenges and rewards f ding smething difficult. Sctt Kelly said he tried t express that view everywhere he went. And he spke frm experience, having spent a career that included the time as a NASA astrnaut,US Navy captain,fighter pilt, and engineer.
Sctt spke at the University f Nrth Alabama, sharing stries abut his experience f spending a year n the Internatinal Space Statin(ISS). He said the physical pressure f living in weightlessness fr a year was hard t describe and that the fluids(积水)in his head smetimes made him feel like he was standing n his head. What d yu d when yu are cld? Yu may wrap yurself in a warn blanket and sip a cup f steaming cca. All animals have different ways f respnding t the cld. Sme animals such as Canad geese migrate(迁徙)t warmer climates. Others sleep fr the whle winter. But the wd frg des smething unusual. It freezes!
The wd frg's ability t freeze its bdy is vital t its survival. The wd frg can live in extreme climates frm the Appalachian Muntains acrss much f Canada and int Alaska. When temperatures are cld, a wd frg digs dwn a few inches beneath the leaves n the frest flr. As the utdr temperature decreases, the frg’s skin freezes. Fr a human this wuld result in cld injury, r the freezing f bdy tissues, but the wd frg has a natural defense against the cld that is remarkable.
Special prteins inside the frg’s bdy freeze the water in the frg's bld. Water frced ut f the frg's ther cells freezes as well. But a special slutin prduced inside the frg acts like antifreeze in a car, prtecting the cells.
In cld temperatures the frg’s heartbeat breathing and brain activity stp. Because the rgans are surrunded by ice, they d nt rt away(腐烂,烂掉)and d nt require xygen r nutrients. In fact, abut 65% f the frg freezes.The frg, hwever is still alive.
The wd frg can freeze fr a few days r several mnths at a time. It can survive temperatures as lw as 18°F withut damage t its bdy.
