In 1987, during the urban renewal f Jingdezhen, Gng saw prcelain shards being unearthed at archaelgical excavatins(挖掘). They expsed him t the vast gap between mdern prcelain craftsmanship and that f ancient times.“ The glaze(釉) was as smth as jade, and their beauty was indescribable,” he says. This set him ff n a search fr paints, materials and ther elements t match histrical standards.
In the early 1990s, he spent three years researching the craftsmanship f blue- and- white prcelain made during the Ming Dynasty. “I fund that the blue and white clrs were thanks t the rich trace metal elements in their raw materials, which came frm the Middle East,” Gng says. Later, Gng studied hundreds f items f blue- and- white prcelain frm ancient imperial kilns, and fund that ancient peple explred the use f lcal plants and eventually settled n ferns (蕨类), which grew abundantly arund Jingdezhen and were the key t achieving the jade- like glaze. Unfrtunately, they are ruined by mdern electric and gas kiln equipment.
