My first newsrm was in a grand building with tall arched windws that dminated a street crner in the small Midwestern city where I wrked. Inside, there was a high ceiling. “Did this used t be a bank?” many visitrs wuld ask. But it had in fact, always been a newsrm.
I was yung and shy when I first went t wrk there, and it prbably tk me a mnth befre I talked t any f the ther reprters. But eventually, they became my best friends, the cre f my scial life.
My secnd newsrm was the airy tp flr f a histric building in the state capital f Maryland. It was smaller and less grand but far mre energizing. My clleagues were lder. I learned s much abut hw t be a reprter frm verhearing their phne interviews.
This past summer, several American newspapers annunced they wuld be clsing their newsrms. Many lcal newspapers have gne ut f business in recent years, victims f declining circulatin and shrinking advertising dllars. Then alng came the crnavirus pandemic, and s many f us were sent hme t wrk frm there. The pleasant surprise is that we have all succeeded brilliantly in wrking remtely. But sme managers have lked at this success and thught: “Why wuld we need t return t the newsrm?”
I wrry that they are making a big mistake. A physical newsrm sends a pwerful message t a cmmunity: “We are here fr yu.” At my first jb, strangers culd walk right thrugh the dr and straight up t my desk. We treasured that visibility.

In a recent study, Prfessr Betsy Sparrw cnducted sme experiments. She and her research team wanted t knw the Internet is changing memry. In the first experiment, they gave peple 40 unimprtant facts t type int a cmputer. The first grup f peple understd that the cmputer wuld save the infrmatin. The secnd grup understd that the cmputer wuld nt save it. Later, the secnd grup remembered the infrmatin better. Peple in the first grup knew they culd find the infrmatin again, s they did nt try t remember it.
In anther experiment, the researchers gave peple facts t remember, and tld them where t find the infrmatin n the Internet. The infrmatin was in a specific cmputer flder (文件夹). Surprisingly, peple later remember the flder lcatin better than the facts. When peple use the Internet, they d nt remember the infrmatin. Rather, they remember hw t find it. This is called “transactive memry (交互记忆).”
Accrding t Sparrw, we are nt becming peple with pr memries as a result f the Internet. Instead, cmputer users are develping strnger transactive memries; that is, peple are learning hw t rganize huge quantities f infrmatin s that they are able t access it at a later date. Amazn is building three glass spheres filled with trees, s that emplyees can “wrk and scialize in a mre natural, park-like setting.” At Ggle’s ffice, an entire flr is carpeted in grass. Facebk’s secnd Menl Park campus will have a rftp park with a walking path.
Olle Lundberg, the funder f Lundberg Design, has wrked with many tech cmpanies ver the years. “We have lst the cnnectins t the maker in ur lives, and ur tech engineers are the nes wh feel impverished (贫乏的), because they’re surrunded by the digital wrld,” he says. “They’re lking fr a way t regain their individual identity, and we’ve fund that intrducing real crafts is ne way t d that.”
This craft-based thery is rted in histry. William Mrris, the English artist and writer, turned back t pre-industrial arts in the eighteen-sixties, just after Industrial Revlutin. The Arts and Crafts mvement defined itself against machines. “Withut creative human ccupatin, peple became discnnected frm life,” Mrris said.
Research has shwn that natural envirnments can restre ur mental abilities. In Japan, patients are encuraged t “frest-bathe”, taking walks thrugh wds t lwer their bld pressure.
