Pretty in pink: adult wmen d nt remember being s bsessed with the clur, yet it is pervasive in ur yung girls' lives. It is nt that pink is intrinsically (内在地) bad, but it is such a tiny slice f the rainbw and, thugh it may celebrate girlhd in ne way, it als repeatedly and firmly fuses girls' identity t appearance. Then it presents that cnnectin, even amng tw-year-lds, between girls as nt nly inncent but as evidence f inncence. Lking arund, I despaired at the singular lack f imaginatin abut girls' lives and interests.
Girls' attractin t pink may seem unavidable, smehw encded in their DNA, but accrding t J Paletli, an assciate prfessr f American Studies, it is nt. Children were nt clur-cded at all until the early 20th century: in the era befre dmestic washing machines all babies wre white as a practical matter, since the nly way f getting clthes clean was t bil them. What’s mre, bth bys and girls wre what were thught f as gender-neutral dresses. When nursery clurs were intrduced, pink was actually cnsidered the mre masculine clur, a pastel versin f red, which was assciated will, strength. Blue, with its intimatins(暗示) f the Virgin Mary(圣母玛利亚), cnstancy and faithfulness, symblized femininity(女性化). It was nt until the mid-1980s, when amplifying age and sex differences became a dminant children's marketing strategy, that pink fully came int its wn, when it began t seem inherently attractive t girls, part f what defined them as female, at least fr the first few critical years.
I had nt realized hw prfundly marketing trends dictated ur perceptin f what is natural t kids, including ur cre beliefs abut their psychlgical develpment. Take the tddler. I assumed that phase was smething experts develped after years f research int children' s behaviur: wrng. Turns ut, accrding t Daniel Ck, a histrian f childhd cnsumerism, it was ppularized as a marketing trick by clthing manufacturers in the 1930s.
Trade publicatins cunselled (劝告) department stres that, in rder t increase sales, they shuld create a "third stepping slime" between infant wear and lder kids' clthes. It was nly after "tddler" (学步的小孩) became a cmmn shppers' term that it evlved int a bradly accepted develpmental stage. Splitting kids, r adults, int ever-tinier categries has prved a sure-fire way t bst prfits. And ne f the easiest ways t segment a market is t magnify gender differences --- r invent them where they did nt previusly exist.
( ) 43. By saying "it is... the rainbw" (Para. 1), the authr means pink ______.
    A. shuld nt be the sle representatin f girlhd
    B. shuld nt be assciated with girls' inncence
    C. cannt explain girls' lack f imaginatin
    D. cannt influence girls' lives and interests
( ) 44. What des the wrd “encde” in Para. 2 refer t?
    A. discveredB. prgrammedC. markedD. sealed
( ) 45. The authr suggests that ur perceptin f children' s psychlgical develpment was much influenced by ______.
    A. the bservatin f children's nature
    B. the marketing f prducts fr children
    C. researches int children's behaviur
    D. studies f childhd cnsumptin
( ) 46. We may learn frm Paragraph 4 that department stres were advised t ________.
    A. classify cnsumers int smaller grups
    B. attach equal imprtance t different genders
    C. fcus n infant wear and lder kids' clthes
    D. create sme cmmn shppers' terms
( ) 47. It can be cncluded that girls' attractin t pink seems t he ______.
    A. fully understd by clthing manufacturers
    B. clearly explained by their inbrn tendency
    C. mainly impsed by prfit-driven businessmen
    D. well interpreted by psychlgical experts
    五、六选四

After graduating frm cllege, Maggie realized her dream f becming a teacher. Hwever, waking up fr her 8:30 a.m. classes turned her int a zmbie (无生气的人) , and she lst her jb because she lacked enthusiasm.
Maggie isn’t lazy. She suffers frm delayed sleep phase syndrme (DSPS,睡眠相位后移症候群) --- a disrder that affects ne in 750 adults that causes them t be smewhat ncturnal (夜间活动的). DSPS is ften cnfused with insmnia (失眠),perhaps because sufferers seem tired during the day. Hwever, the tw disrders are very different. Insmniacs have truble with the prcess f falling asleep. (48)_________ They just can’t fall asleep early even if they want t.
Essentially, DSPS means a persn's internal clck is set differently. (49)________ As a result, they're ut f sync (同步) with the rest f sciety. Peple with DSPS struggle t keep their eyes pen during mrning meetings because their bdies are cnvinced it’s the middle f the night. They seem less efficient and creative at the ffice, and make mre wrkplace accidents. DSPS als damages their health, causing depressin, anxiety, heart disease and many ther illnesses due t sleep deprivatin.
(50)________ Frtunately, that’s nt the case. Flexible wrk schedules are already very cmmn. Traditinally, managers tend t think mre peple in the ffice equals mre utput, but new research shws that peple wh wrk flexible hurs are mre prductive and mre likely t stay with their cmpany because they are happier and healthier. Thanks t these findings, many Eurpean cuntries have passed laws giving every wrker the right t apply fr a flexible wrk arrangement. Accrding t Cary Cper, a psychlgist at Lancaster University, mst U.K. emplyees will be wrking half frm hme in five years.
This is great news nt just fr DSPS sufferers but als fr their cmpanies. (51)________ Cnsequently, they will be able t save a large sum f mney.

In cnsequence, science students believe they are learning in a mre stimulating envirnment.
Unfrtunately, hwever, sme students think twice befre chsing sciences, because f their reputatin as cmparatively difficult subjects that invlve memrizing facts and figures. Mrever, there is a widespread belief that high marks are harder t btain in sciences.
In additin, science has a serius image prblem. Many are discuraged by the s- called lack f charm f science as a prfessin, by film steretypes (典型形象)f mad prfessrs and cmputer geeks, and by the suspicin with which the media ften treat scientific research, fr instance cncerning genetically mdified fd.
Students shuld be invited t participate in Science Fair prjects, scientific wrk experience prgrammes and virtual Open Days at university science faculty s that a mre psitive impressin f science can be created. They shuld als be made aware f the benefits f studying science, such as develping thinking skills, discvering hw things wrk and — ne day — finding real slutins t real prblems.

A 句义理解题。 “It is nt that pink is intrinsically(内在地) bad, but it is such a tiny slice f the rainbw and, thugh it may celebrate girlhd in ne way, it als repeatedly and firmly fuses girls' identity t appearance.”
“Girls' attractin t pink may seem unavidable, smehw encded in their DNA”:女孩喜欢粉色似乎不可避免,似乎DNA编码就是这样。由unavidable、DNA这些词可以推测是基因里本来就有的,所以选择B,编码。

Recently, I tk part in an activity rganized by my schl and it was very educatinal, which made students mre aware f the prblems faced by peple with physical disabilities.
We were asked t “take n a disability” fr several hurs. I chse t use a wheelchair while thers wre sund-blcking earplugs r blindflds.
I had never cnsidered hw difficult it wuld be t use a wheelchair befre. As sn as I sat dwn, my weight made the chair rll, since the wheels were unlcked. It tk me quite a while t cntrl it, but my palms reddened and my wrist and frearm muscles ached. I was deeply tuched. I culdn't imagine hw it was fr thse wh had t use a wheelchair fr gd. I felt frustrated every time smene talked t me, because I had t strain my neck and lked up at him.
“We shuld put urselves in thers, shes.” I said t my friend Tm after the activity.
“Yes, we ught t understand the disabled and help them if necessary,” respnded Tm.
The experience has left a deep impressin n me bth physically and emtinally. I realize hw little I knw abut the life f a disabled persn and hw much we shuld d fr them. The experience is really instructive and meaningful.
