Researchers discvered that "scializing was just as effective as mre traditinal kinds f mental exercise in bsting memry and intellectual perfrmance," lead authr Oscar Ybarra, a psychlgist at the University f Michigan Institute fr Scial Research, said in a statement.
In ne investigatin, they analyzed data n 3,610 peple, ages 24 t 96. They fund that the higher their level f scial interactin, the better their cgnitive functining. Scial interactin included getting tgether r having phne chats with relatives, friends and neighbrs.
In anther experiment, the researchers cnducted lab tests n 76 cllege students, ages 18 t 21, t assess hw scial interactins and intellectual exercises affected the results f memry and mental perfrmance tests.
The students were divided int three grups: The scial interactin grup had a discussin f a scial issue fr 10 minutes befre taking the tests; the intellectual activities grup cmpleted three tasks (including a reading cmprehensin exercise and a crsswrd puzzle) befre the tests; and a cntrl grup watched a 10-minute clip f the Seinfeld televisin shw.
"We fund that shrt-term scial interactin lasting fr just 10 minutes bsted participants' intellectual perfrmance as much as engaging in s-called 'intellectual' activities fr the same amunt f time," Ybarra said.
The study was expected t be published in the February 2013 issue f the jurnal Persnality and Scial Psychlgy Bulletin.

Rembrandt was an extrardinary Dutch painter. He was mst well-knwn fr his brushwrk and the way in which he cnnected with the human sul. His life, hwever, was nt happy.
He was brn n July 15, 1606 in Leiden, the Netherlands. His father wanted him t have a real, learned prfessin but Rembrandt left the University f Leiden after becming bred. He began studying art under a lcal teacher but sn left and studied in Amsterdam where he mastered all his lessns in six mnths!
At the age f 22, he mved back t Leiden and began t get his wn students. One f his students was the famus artist Gerrit Du. In 1631 he returned t Amsterdam where he became the mst ppular prtrait painter in Hlland. Rembrandt met Saskia and married her in 1634. She was a cusin f a very successful art dealer and she helped him t meet wealthy peple wh cmmissined(委任制作) many paintings frm him. He used her as a mdel in many f his paintings.
Rembrandt’s private life, hwever, was very unfrtunate. He had fur children with Saskia but nly ne, Titus, survived. Saskia died in 1742 at the age f nly 30. In 1649, his husekeeper became his secnd wife and was als a mdel fr many f his paintings. Even thugh Rembrandt was very successful as an artist, art dealer and teacher, he lived in a careless way and had t declare bankruptcy in 1656. He even had t sell his whle art cllectin and his huse t pay ff his debts.
His unfrtunate life, hwever, didn’t affect his art. He painted many great paintings during that time. His new lve, Hendrickje, died in 1663 and his 27-year-ld sn, Titus, died in 1668. Eleven mnths later, n Octber 4, 1669, Rembrandt died in Amsterdam. He prduced mre than 600 paintings and ver 2,000 drawings!
