    Brn in 1949, Diana Nyad tk an early interest in swimming as a sprt and was a Flrida State High Schl swimming champin. Like many yung athletes, she had Olympic dreams, but a serius illness kept her frm cmpeting in the Games. The disappintment didn’t stp her frm ging frward. Instead, she became interested in marathn swimming. A brilliant athlete, she was well-cnditined fr spending lng perids f time in the water. As a lng-distance swimmer, she wuld cmpete against herself and the bstacles presented by distance, danger, cld, and exhaustin.
    Fr ten years Nyad devted herself t becming ne f the wrld’s best lng-distance swimmers. In 1970, she swam a ten-mile marathn in Lake Ontari, setting the wmen’s recrd fr the curse. In 1972 she set anther recrd by swimming 102.5 miles frm an island in the Bahamas t the cast f Flrida. Then she brke a third recrd when swimming arund Manhattan Island in 1975.
    Nyad attempted t swim the distance between Flrida and Cuba in 1978. Thugh the span f water is less than 100 miles wide, it is rugh and dangerus. After battling the water fr tw days, she had t give fr the sake f her wn health and safety. Even s, she impressed the wrld with her curage and strng desire t succeed. Fr Nyad her strength f purpse was just as imprtant as reading Cuba. That is hw she defined success. It did nt matter that her swim came up shrt; she believed she had tuched the ther shre.
    When Nyad ended her career as a swimmer, she cntinued t try new things---travelling the wrld as a reprter, writing bks and giving public speeches abut her life. Diana Nyad wrks t inspire thers, just as she did when she swam the waters f the wrld.
