HHSuth Krea’s birth rate, already the wrld’s lwest, has drpped yet again in the latest setback t the cuntry’s effrts t bst its declining ppulatin.
The natinal statistics bdy reprted Wednesday that the birth rate fell t 0.72 in 2023—dwn frm 0.78 the previus year. Ants have the ability t smell cancerus cells in humans, a new study has discvered, suggesting they culd be used fr cancer diagnsis in future. Researchers frm the French Natinal Centre fr Scientific Research (CNRS) discvered that ant species Frmica fusca has a well develped sense f smell. It was able t differentiate (区分) cancerus cells frm healthy cells in humans, thanks t their sense f smell, limited trials revealed.
T cnduct their research, the scientists perfrmed tests with 36 ants, smelling cells under a labratry setting. First, the specialists expsed the ants t the smell f a sample f cancerus human cells. This smell was then assciated with a reward f sugar slutin. In a secnd step, the researchers expsed the ants t tw different smells. One was a new smell and the secnd was the smell f the cancerus cells. Once this test was successful, the researchers expsed the ants t different cancerus cells.
As such, the scientists fund that ants discriminate between cancerus and healthy cells and between tw cancerus lines. After training, Frmica fusca ants are able t detect vlatile rganic cmpunds given ff by cancerus cells. This first study shws that ants have high ptential, are capable f learning very quickly, at lwer cst, and are efficient, CNRS pints ut in a news release.
