Dgs help a lt in rescue wrk. With greater sense f smell, they are able t find survivrs buried under fallen buildings in a shrt time. But nw a new animal is being trained t assist search and rescue teams after an earthquake hits, and it’s the rat.
These rescue rats are being trained by Dr. Dnna Kean, a researcher frm Glasgw, Sctland wh has been wrking with rats fr years. Kean explained why she and her clleagues at the nnprfit APOPO train rats instead f dgs. “The rats have a cmparable sense f smell, and they’re just as trainable as dgs,” she said. “Their size is useful because they will be able t mve thrugh different envirnments that dgs just wuldn’t be able t.”
At the mment, the rats are wearing hmemade prttype backpacks that cntain micrphnes, vide equipment, and lcatin trackers, and then scientists are sending these rats int mck debris(模拟的废墟). Rats wuld be able t get int small spaces t get t victims (受灾人群) buried in the ruins. “We have nt been in a real situatin yet, we have gt a mck debris site. When we track the backpack, we will be able t hear frm where the rat is inside the debris,” Kean said. “We have the ptential t speak t victims thrugh the rat.”
Researchers train them n a basic series f behaviur. Training starts ff in a really basic envirnment: a small and empty rm. Then they gradually increase the difficulty in rder t make it like real life. They can start adding in debris and making the training area lk mre like an actual cllapsed (坍塌的) building site.
The training just started, and researchers still have t run training trials utside the research envirnment. My first pineapple n ice at a crner deli (熟食店) in New Yrk was a treat. It was n the nrth-east cmer f Clumbus and 57th Street, a stre filled with flwers and fresh prduce that stayed pen all night. In my first flush f enthusiasm fr the new city, everything abut that deli seemed great. Abundance! Cnvenience! Pineapple, freshly cut and packaged n ice! A lasting memry.
It has been 15 years since then. Crner delis remain, but under pain f cmpetitin frm a new generatin f delivery alternatives like GPuff and Getir that prmise t deliver any item within 15 minutes, getting up ff the sfa t walk half a blck fr sme milk is a lng past. One ingredient dwn fr yur dishes? N need t turn ff yur stve and put n yur shes! Instead, fr a small fee, rder a persn t yur dr bearing a single can f chickpeas. LEGS NO MORE!
The dwnfall f ld services, and the reversal (反转) f the cnsumptin style are affecting the city landscape at all levels. As a multibillin dllar business, hyper-fast delivery is tearing at breakneck speed t make tiny delivery windws. It nt nly means mre bikes n the streets, large areas f real estate (房地产) are being turned ver t “dark stres” that yu walk past every day but can nly buy via an app nce yu’re at hme.
The threat t New Yrk’s symblic delis remains t be seen. Althugh nearly every business, frm diners t bkshps, has clsed their drs ver the last 10 years, nly the New Yrk delis remain largely untuched. Still, the pressure must be intense.
Instant delivery is making us even lazier and mre useless as peple, f which I am nt prud. Last week, when running ut f milk, I rdered the delivery f a single cffee frm Starbucks. I gave myself a pass because it was cffee. But if these things are quicker and mre cnvenient, they’re als sadder and stripped f the bare minimum f human cntact needed t hld neighburhds tgether. And, like s much innvatin in technlgy, they can g against the pint f the very thing they enable.
32. What’s the authr’s first impressin f the crner deli?
A. Cmfrtable.B. Impressive.C. Disappinting.D. Regretful.
33. What can we infer frm paragraph 2?
A. Mre milk is available nwadays.
B. Crner delis still have gd business.
C. Chickpeas are cheaper t purchase.
D. Peple’s lifestyle has changed a lt.
34. What message des the authr cnvey in the last paragraph?
A. Fast delivery is leaving us scially discnnected.
B. New technlgy is putting ld things ut f use.
C. Innvatin in technlgy is benefiting us greatly.
D. Instant delivery is bringing us mre cnvenience.
35. What is the passage mainly abut?
A. The pressure new technlgy brings t delis.
B. The reflectin n the new cnsumptin trend.
C. An accunt f mdern fast delivery industry.
D. An unfrgettable life experience in America.
