    A strm prgresses thrugh fur different stages befre it is actually cnsidered a hurricane. First is a trpical disturbance(热带扰动), which has thunderstrms and rtating(旋转的) winds. Next is a trpical depressin(热带低气压), which is similar t a trpical disturbance, but has winds between 23 and 39 miles per hur. A trpical strm is the next level, which has strnger wind speeds between 40 and 73 miles per hur. Once winds reach 74 miles per hur the strm is fficially called a hurricane. The wind picks up energy frm the warm surface f cean water.
    As a hurricane crsses ver land, it begins t becme weaker r break apart and reduce in strength. This is because it is n lnger ver the warm cean water that it needs fr energy. At this pint, a hurricane can still cause a lt f damage because f high winds, rain, and flding. But unless it makes its way back ver the pen cean, it is dwngraded frm a hurricane back t a trpical strm.
    What's Yur Name, Hurricane?
    Hurricanes and trpical strms are given names t help peple recgnize them. Scientists refer t hurricanes and strms by name as they track them acrss the cean.
    Befre 1953, hurricanes were nt given fficial names. Frm 1953 thrugh 1978, hurricanes were nly given female names, like Isabel, Camille, Claudette, and Wilma. Beginning in 1979, hurricanes were given the names f bth wmen and men. Tday, the names alternate male and female, and they are named in rder f letters.
    Fr example, in 2010, strms were named as fllws: Alex(male), Bnnie(female), Clin (male), Danielle(female), Earl(male) and s n...
