1 Hw did slave wners regard their slaves?
    2 What was a slave’s life like?
They didn’t regard them as humans but as animals, withut respecting them.
Daily life fr a slave invlved back-breaking labur. Slaves had t wrk all day lng withut enugh rest. They were ften physically abused by their wners and had n legal rights.
Lk at the title and skim the passage. Chse the bk in which yu wuld mst likely find the passage.
1 The Pwer f Speech 2 Famus US Presidents 3 Great Battles in Histry
On a grey afternn n 19 Nvember 1863, a tall, thin man munted a platfrm in a field in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and began t speak. The place was the site f a recent battle where thusands f sldiers had died. The man was Abraham Lincln, President f the United States f America, and he was there in memry f the sldiers wh had died. The speech he gave was just 268 wrds lng and lasted tw minutes. But this address t the crwd changed the minds f his peple and helped shape a natin.
At that time, America was bitterly divided. Fr tw years, its peple had been deep in a civil war between the slave-wning Cnfederate Suthern States and the “free” Nrthern States f the Unin. The wrst battle lasted three days and tk place at Gettysburg in 1863. The Unin side wn, but at a great cst. Over 50,000 sldiers were killed r wunded, and peple lst hpe and purpse. What was all this suffering fr?
Lincln understd the feelings f the civilian peple. His speech gave them hpe, belief and a reasn t lk t the future. He gave them a new visin f what the United States f America shuld be, based n the ideals set dwn by its Funding Fathers 87 years befre. It was what the sldiers had died fr. Nw it was up t the living t remve nt nly the divisins between Nrth and Suth, but the bundaries between black and white, and wrk step by step twards the equality f humankind.
Fur scre and seven years ag ur fathers brught frth, upn this cntinent, a new natin, cnceived in Liberty, and dedicated t the prpsitin that all men are created equal.
Nw we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that natin, r any natin, s cnceived, and s dedicated, can lng endure. We are met here n a great battlefield f that war. We have cme t dedicate a prtin f it as a final resting place fr thse wh here gave their lives that that natin might live. It is altgether fitting and prper that we shuld d this.
But in a larger sense, we can nt dedicate – we can nt cnsecrate – we can nt hallw this grund. The brave men, living and dead, wh struggled here, have cnsecrated it far abve ur pr pwer t add r detract. The wrld will little nte, nr lng remember, what we say here, but can never frget what they did here. It is fr us, the living, rather t be dedicated here t the unfinished wrk which they have, thus far, s nbly carried n.
It is rather fr us t be here dedicated t the great task remaining befre us – that frm these hnred dead we take increased devtin t that cause fr which they here gave the last full measure f devtin – that we here highly reslve that these dead shall nt have died in vain; that this natin shall have a new birth f freedm; and that this gvernment f the peple, by the peple, fr the peple, shall nt perish frm the earth. (“The Gettysburg Address” by Abraham Lincln)
On 19 Nvember 1863, in a field in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
The Battle f Gettysburg in 1863, which resulted in ver 50,000 casualties.
Hw did Lincln describe the funding f the US?
It was a new natin cnceived in Liberty and dedicated t the prpsitin that all men are created equal./ It aimed at bringing freedm t the peple and was based n the principle that all men are created equal.
What challenges did the Civil War bring t the natin?
Hw did Lincln describe the men wh fught in the war?
It wuld test whether a natin cnceived in Liberty and dedicated t the prpsitin that all men are created equal can lng endure.
They gave their lives s that their natin might live. They were brave men whse struggles had cnsecrated the grund.
What was the “great task” that Lincln described?
Wh wuld be respnsible fr carrying ut this task?
That this natin shall have a new birth f freedm; and that this gvernment f the peple, by the peple, fr the peple, shall nt perish frm the earth.
The living shuld be dedicated t the task.
1 What was Lincln’s purpse in giving the speech? 2 Lincln talked abut gvernment “f the peple, by the peple, fr the peple”. What des this mean?3 What ther speeches can yu think f that stress the imprtance f breaking bundaries?4 What effrts t break bundaries are described in the tw reading passages in this unit?
Wrk in grups. Give a talk abut the significance f ablishing slavery in the US.
1 Organise yur ideas by answering the questins. • What was the US like befre slavery was ablished? • Hw was it different afterwards? • In what ways did the ablitin f slavery help t break bundaries? 2 D research t find mre evidence t supprt yur ideas. 3 Give yur talk t the class.
Nw think abut effective ways t find infrmatin t supprt yur ideas.
Hell, everyne. Tday, I’m ging t intrduce Edgar Snw. Edgar Snw was an American jurnalist wh wrte influential bks and articles abut China in the 1930s. At a time when relatively little was knwn abut ur cuntry in the Western wrld, his 1937 bk Red Star ver China brke idelgical bundaries by telling the stries f the Chinese cmmunist mvement frm the inside.
Althugh Snw was nt the nly internatinal jurnalist t set ft in China during the early decades f the 20th century, what set him apart frm the thers was that he actually spent time with the Chinese Red Army. He listened t their stries and bserved their day-t-day lives, as well as cnducting interviews with Ma Zedng and ther leaders. His bigraphical accunts and depictins f histrical events, such as the Lng March, therefre captured the spirit f the perid and the peple living thrugh it with unprecedented authenticity. Snw is cnsidered “ur American friend”.
I admire Snw’s special insight and bravery, risking his life during the war t get t the heart f the stry and crrect prejudice. Fr me, Snw’s writing, and in particular Red Star ver China, is a must-read fr anyne with an interest in that perid.
1 Wh was Edgar Snw? 2 What did he d and what bundaries did he break?
He was an American jurnalist wh wrte influential bks and articles abut China in the 1930s.

Cmplete the bxes t rganise yur wn speech abut anther persn wh has helped t increase understanding between tw cuntries.
    Nw write yur speech.
Wrk in pairs. Make imprvements t each ther’s speeches and share them with the class. Nw give yur speech t the class.
