3D printing is taking hme cnstructin t new heights. In Hustn, a giant printer is building what designers say is the first 3D-printed tw-stry huse in the U. S. The machine has been puring a cncrete mix, ne layer at a time, alngside a few n-site wrkers, t create a 4,000-square-ft hme.
While cnstructin 3D printing has been arund fr ver a decade, the technlgy has nly started t break grund in the U. S. hmebuilding market ver the last cuple f years, said Leslie Lk, the architectural designer fr the prject. She said her team aims t eventually scale up their designs t be able t efficiently 3D print multifamily hmes.
Supprters f the technlgy say 3D printing culd address a range f cnstructin challenges including labr shrtages and building mre flexible hmes in the face f natural disasters. With the Hustn hme, the team is pushing the industrial printer t its limits t understand hw it can imprve the technlgy, in the quest t quickly build cst-effective and well-designed hmes. “In the future, it has t be fast, simple design in rder t cmpete with ther building technlgies,” said Hikmat Zerbe, head f structural engineering.
Zerbe calls the tw-stry huse a “big labratry” where they will study the technlgy’s ptentials in hme cnstructin. “We are nt trying t beat the clck,” he said. “It’s a case study. We’re learning the capabilities f the machine, learning the reactin f the material under different weather cnditins,” he said. Cncrete can better withstand strng winds and strms, but it’s a pricier building material. Once the 3D-printing technlgy is imprved, Zerbe said, builders may reach a pint where such cnstructin is cheaper than nn-printed husing.
On the design side, Lk sees pprtunity t ne day ffer unique custmized features at a mass scale, withut heavy labr csts. “The printer desn’t care if yu print the same chair 100 times r yu print 100 different chairs,” she said. “This pens up the pssibility f hw we can actually ffer custmized design fr the users, whether it’s a single-family huse r a multifamily building.”
8. What is the current gal f Lk’s team?
A. T cntrl the hmebuilding market.B. T imprve quake-resistant designs.
C. T mass-prduce 3D-printed huses.D. T build special custmized huses.
9. What is an advantage f the 3D-printed huse ver traditinal nes?
A. Reduced labr csts.B. Simplified designs.
C. Strengthened materials.D. Expanded functins.
10. What des Zerbe mean when he calls the huse a “big labratry”?
A. They use cheaper building materials.B. They are innvating the technlgy.
C. They try t finish it in a shrter time.D. They are gaining experience frm it.
11. What des Lk stress abut the printer?
A. It can prduce large numbers f the same cpies.
B. It can make different prducts in large quantities.
C. It can nt tell the differences in custmers’ needs.
D. It can nt be used in building multifamily huses.

Scientists have ften seen curisity as a mtivatin that drives us t discver new infrmatin as sn as pssible. In previus research n curisity, when peple were given the chice between receiving the answer nw r later, they generally chse the fastest path t reslutin. Psychlgists think the state f nt knwing can be discmfrting, which then mtivates a search fr infrmatin that, when btained, is met with relief and satisfactin.
But this picture f curisity is incmplete. In a recent study, published in the Prceedings f the Natinal Academy f Sciences USA, we explred whether there are multiple flavrs f curisity. We fund that while stimulating interest can indeed drive an urgent desire fr answers, it can als bst patience, setting peple up fr thse mments f discvery.
We asked mre than 2,000 peple aged 19 t 76 t watch a series f shrt vides that we created fr an nline experiment. Each vide started with a blank screen. A line wuld then appear and squiggle arund (蠕动), gradually taking a shape. While ur participants watched each vide, we asked them t reprt hw curius they were abut what the drawing wuld becme. Their replies let us judge hw curisity changed as peple saw mre and mre f a vide. We als gave them the chice t keep watching the drawing slwly unfld r t jump t the end f the vide, revealing the whle picture immediately.
Interestingly, when participants were mre curius abut what the drawing wuld becme, they were mre likely t cntinue watching rather than skip ahead t the answer. In ther wrds, higher curisity mtivated peple t slw dwn, be patient and invest in experiencing the winding path t reslutin.
Our wrk underlines the cmplexity f curisity and its pwer. Develping curisity can help us enjy the prcess f learning and vercming challenges.
12. Why des the writer mentin his experience with the wdpecker?
A. T shw his interest in birds.B. T supprt his recent study.
C. T crrect misunderstanding.D. T lead t a knwn thery.
13. What des the underlined phrase “multiple flavrs” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Different impacts.B. Varius frms.C. Strng mtivatins.D. Special tastes.
14. Hw were the participants different frm thse in previus research?
A. They wuldn’t be given the answer earlier.B. They willingly waited lng fr the answer.
C. They didn’t shw a high level f curisity.D. They needed t reprt their curisity level.
15. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
A. Curisity: An Urgent Desire fr LearningB. Curisity: The Drive thrugh the Prcess
C. Curius Learners: Faced with ChallengesD. Curius Learners: Eager Fr Infrmatin

T sme peple, the sizzle and clatter f restaurant kitchens might be like an rchestra; t me, such sunds behind the swinging drs just meant chas. Hwever unpleasant I felt the places were, I decided t apply fr a part-time jb at a ppular restaurant. The reasn was simple: I needed mney. I wanted t jin a camping trip t the Blue Muntains with my friends, but that wuld cst abut 150 dllars. “Yu have t pay fr entertainment by yurself,” my parents said.
S I applied, and Mr. Smith, the bss f the restaurant, allwed me t have a try. My jb was super easy and bring: the newly prepared dishes wuld be put at the cunter between the kitchen and dining rm, and it was my duty t deliver them t the right custmers.
The first few days were tiring but OK. Hwever, setbacks sn fllwed as I struggled t keep pace during a particularly busy lunch rush. I awkwardly spilled a tray f drinks, making lud nises and the flr messy. I was embarrassed and began t feel nervus. One evening, I mixed up rders fr a large party, causing chas and frustratin.
I felt desperate. I screwed everything up. Then I heard Mr. Smith call me, and I went int his ffice with my head lw. T my surprise, he didn’t blame me. Instead, he made me a cup f cffee. “Relax, yung man,” he said. “Try t smile. Things always g wrng if yu can’t really enjy what yu’re ding. Feel the fun in the jb, and yu’ll be OK!”
I thught he was right. The next day when I was wrking, I glimpsed int the kitchen and was amazed: in the narrw and crwded space everyne was busy — the chefs swirling (翻动) pans, the manager yelling custmers’ requirements, thers cming and ging with dishes t deliver — but everything went smthly withut any lumping r bumping.
