During my daughter’s first year at schl, her teacher dismissed ur cncerns abut her shaky pencil hld by saying: “Dn’t wrry, handwriting is n its way ut. By the time she’s in year 12, they’ll all be typing r vice-dictating their exams.”
Fast-frward 12 lng schl years and that nw grwn-up girl is in her final high-schl exams. And f the many hurs f articles and lng and shrt answers, every single page, line, wrd and letter will be handwritten. Every single primary-schl teacher undertk at the start f each year t fix her handwriting but it never changed.
My high schl had cmpany typing classes. It was s bring but I say that typing is the very best thing I learned at schl. In all my wrk—as a health prfessinal, a writer and an nline teacher—being able t type efficiently, quickly and exactly has been invaluable. As a writer, I can type reasnably accurate ntes during an interview, all while lking at the persn I’m speaking with. As writing rates have been inactive r ging backwards, I’d have a much harder time if I culdn’t type s well.
A grup f friends wh went t high schl says that I’m frtunate t have had cmpulsry typing lessns, as sme schls nly ffered it t girls, and sme friends deliberately shunned the subject in rder t avid gender-based pinins that they wanted t becme a secretary.
Yu might be thinking that nne f this will be an issue fr much lnger given hw far vice recgnitin tech has cme and hw ChatGPT can prduce writing within secnds. In fact, the increased availability f AI will perhaps mean that handwritten exams will be arund fr even lnger, as seeing smene put pen t paper is ne f the few ways we have f prmising riginal wrk.
Efficient handwriting and fast and crrect typing are skills that perhaps shuld be mre highly valued by educatrs and emplyers. Learning t hand-write and type might be bring but I predict that they’ll still be imprtant skills even when tday’s little nes are in year 12.

C. It brught mre jb chances fr him.D. It helped him survive his hard life.

7. What des the authr think handwriting may ensure?

Each summer I teach at the Cranberry Lake Bilgical Statin, a remte wilderness field schl in the Adirndacks.
One f ur best teachers return s every summer. There are hundreds f sandy places fr a snapping turtle (鳄龟) nest, but this turtle chses t lay her eggs in the warm pen sand f ur vlleyball curt. Our students are excited t snap phts as eggs leave her bdy. It is a highlight f their field bilgy summer. But they als want t play vlleyball. S the class carefully uncvers the eggs and takes them t anther site the students have prepared and measured t be sure it’s a gd place fr warm, dry sand, s the babies will hatch (孵化) .
The turtle shws me that my life is thanks t the kindness f nature’s creatures wh share this beautiful wrld with us. We’ve been ignring the many ther living things n this planet because f ur way f taking withut giving back. Science, armed with mdels t predict the cming changes, is a pwerful tl fr addressing these crises. But it is nt the nly ne. As a scientist, I hear the certain data, and als a message, carried by snapping turtles: The Earth asks mre f us than gratitude.
A few years ag, there was a secnd mther in just the same spt n ur vlleyball curt. The next day there was anther. And anther. In all, mre than a dzen snapping turtles came amng us in a dzen days. Why wuld lnely things walk int a cmmunity f 100 humans? When ur students went t find suitable sites fr the repeated grups f eggs, they fund that as the lake level rse, they had t seek ut higher grund. It seemed t me that the snapping turtles had becme climate refugees.
I believe the turtles madly climbing t higher places are trying t tell us smething imprtant. They’re shwing us that we’re dangerusly clse t a huge climate disaster, and lts f plants and animals are quickly ging extinct. They want us t ntice and take actin befre it’s t late.

A. They were eager t live in a cmmunity.B. They fund the vlleyball curt the best nest.
C. They gradually adapted t a life n land.D. They displaced themselves fr climate change.
11 What is the purpse f writing this text?
A. T appeal peple t prtect wildlife.B. T amuse peple with interesting turtle stries.
C. T intrduce the survival ability f turtles.D. T shw the wisdm f turtles in laying eggs.

What wuld yu d if yu walked up t a rbt with a human-like head and it smiled at yu first? Yu’d likely smile back and perhaps feel the tw f yu were genuinely interacting. But hw des a rbt knw hw t d this? Or a better questin, hw des it knw t get yu t smile back?
While we’re getting accustmed t rbts that are expert at verbal (口头的) cmmunicatin, thanks in part t advancements in large language mdels like ChatGPT, their nnverbal cmmunicatin skills, especially facial expressins, have fallen far behind.
The Creative Machines Lab has been wrking n this challenge fr mre than five years. In a new study, the grup unveils Em, a rbt. T train the rbt hw t make facial expressins, the researchers put Em in frnt f the camera and let it d randm mvements. After a few hurs, the rbt learned the relatinship between their facial expressins and the mvement rders — much the way humans practice facial expressins by lking in the mirrr. This is similar t ur human ability t imagine what we lk like when we make certain expressins.
Then the team ran vides f human facial expressins fr Em t bserve them ne after anther. After training, which lasts a few hurs, Em culd predict peple’s facial expressins by bserving tiny changes in their faces as they begin t frm an intent t smile. It can nt nly make a wide range f facial expressins but als knws when t use them.
“I think predicting human facial expressins accurately is a revlutin. Traditinally, rbts have nt been designed t cnsider humans’expressins during interactins. Nw, the rbt can integrate human facial expressins as feedback,” said Yuhang Hu. “When a rbt makes c-expressins with peple in real-time, it nt nly imprves the interactin quality but als helps in building trust between humans and rbts. In the future, when interacting with a rbt, it will bserve and understand yur facial expressins, just like a real persn.”
12. Why des the authr ask questins in paragraph 1?
A. T stress the sincere interactin.
B. T shw curisity abut rbts.
C. T get readers engaged in the subject.
D. T prve the pwer f smiling.
13. Hw d researchers train Em t make facial expressins?
A. By making it frce a smile.
B. By asking it t lk in the mirrr.
C By recrding its expressin at randm.
D. By emplying a way f self mdeling.
14. What can the rbt Em d?
A. Interact with humans like a friend.
B. Prepare facial expressin in advance.
C. Read the mind f humans in an active way.
D. Recgnize and respnd t real-time human expressins.
15. What might be the best title fr the text?
A. Em Rbt Makes Quick Facial Reactins
B. Rbts Can Smile at Human Beings Nw
C. Em Rbt Reads Human Mind Exactly
D. Rbts Can Interact with Yu Naturally
