Electric Shcks Can Be Fatal
Gvernment statistics recently shwed that in the UK, mre than 3,000peple a year experience electric shcks in their hmes. A smaller number f peple are killed after they tuch the pwer lines utside their hmes. Electric shcks can cause a persn’s heart r breath t stp and are ptentially fatal. It is essential fr peple t learn basic techniques t deal with such emergencies.
What t d?
●If yu are the first persn t reach smene wh has an electric shck, dn’t tuch him r her!
●If the victim is still hlding the appliance that gives him r her the shck (e. g. a hair dryer), unplug it r turn ff the pwer at its surce. Under n circumstances can yu try t mve the appliance with yur hands!

As a clueless freshman, I waltzed int my first creative writing curse by accident, thinking it was a literature class n hw t read stries, nt hw t write them.
When the teacher intrduced the curse, I realized my mistake. The credits I earned frm the curse wuldn’t cunt tward my majr. By the end f the sessin, hwever, I decided that I had t be a part f the curse. Perhaps, as a lifelng reader, I was eager t understand hw stries wrked their magic.
But taking the class wuld be impssible: I wasn’t even n the wait list. That’s when the teacher asked fr a vlunteer t submit the first wrkshp stry.
Silence blanketed the rm. N ne risked eye cntact. Whever vlunteered wuld have t write a whle stry in a week. Perhaps they, like me, had never written ne befre.
Seizing my chance, I raised my hand and asked, “If I g first, will yu give me a spt in the class?” He said he wuld.
S, instead f keeping my head dwn and aviding eye cntact, I did the ppsite.
Years later, I’d cmpleted a degree in creative writing and was wrking n a nvel when a literary agent (经纪人) asked t read the first 50 pages f my draft. But I wasn’t cmfrtable shwing her anything; the nvel was far frm dne.
Thrughut graduate schl, I’d been advised many times nt t cntact agents until I have a cmplete draft. In the meanwhile, I knew the beginning f my stry was attractive and that the agent might nt remember me after a year.
S, nce again, instead f keeping my head dwn and aviding eye cntact, I did the ppsite. I sent her the first three chapters. A mnth later, she signed me n the strength f thse chapters alne. She has since seen me thrugh the publicatin f three nvels.
Determinatin, fcus, perseverance—the qualities that I cnsider crucial in getting me int Stanfrd n dubt helped me becme the nvelist I am tday. And yet if I’d trained my gaze nly n the path ahead, I wuld have missed s many happy accidents, s many beautiful pprtunities t lk up, raise my hand, and say yes.

Have yu ever bught a new car and started nticing the exact clr and mdel f car everywhere? Has that type f car just becme ppular in yur city? Were they there befre? Or are yu just ging crazy?
Yu’re nt ging crazy. The reasn yu are nw just nticing them is what psychlgists call “priming”. Basically, the cars were always there. Yu just didn’t recgnize them cnsciusly. Hwever, when that certain mdel f car becmes part f yur cnscius thinking, yu start “autmatically” recgnizing all f the ther cars that are the same, because yu are already “primed” t d s.
The priming effect takes many frms. In ne study, students were asked t walk arund a rm fr 5 minutes at a rate f 30 steps per minute, which was abut ne-third their nrmal pace. After this brief experience, the participants were much quicker t recgnize wrds related t ld age, such as frgetful, ld, and lnely. Reciprcal priming effects tend t prduce a cherent reactin: if yu are primed t think f ld age, yu wuld tend t act ld, and acting ld wuld reinfrce the thught f ld age. This research shws that the way we think influences the way we act, and the way we act influences the way we think.
A similar cnclusin was reached by the American psychlgist WilliamJames a century ag, but he emphasized the effect n feeling. “Actins seem t fllw feeling, but really actins and feeling g tgether; and by regulating the actin, which is under the mre direct cntrl f the will, we can indirectly regulate the feeling, which is nt. Thus the path t cheerfulness, shuld ur cheerfulness be lst, is t sit up cheerfully and t act and speak as if cheerfulness were already there.”
S, that’s it. If yu want t be happy, just sit up and act happy. Based n these scientific findings, we can adpt certain priming effects t help make urselves cnsistently happier.
One thing we have in cmmn is ur ability t think, and thus feel. Pleasant thughts have been prven t prduce the chemicals that make us feel happy, particularly thughts and feelings f gratitude. When we purpsefully g thrugh and think abut the things we’re grateful fr and deliberately feel as much gratitude as we can, we are flding ur mind with the “happy chemicals”. Furthermre, by cnsciusly thinking, feeling and expressing gratitude, we will nt nly be happier in the mment, we will be “primed” t recgnize the things in ur life t appreciate. Each time this happens, the “happy chemicals” will be prduced. D this every day and we will becme cnsistently happier. This makes up fr the mmentary happiness we gain frm eating chclate r buying new clthes. Mre than that, cmbining thughts f gratitude with happy acts like smiling and laughing will have a supplementary psitive effect n ur state f mind.
38. Which f the fllwing is an example f the priming effect?
A. Walking much faster after attending a lecture abut ld age.
B. Dnating mney t the pr after seeing pictures f cute cats.
C. Learning abut varius types f cars after purchasing the first car.
D. Cmpleting SO P as SOUP rather than SOAP after seeing the wrd EAT.
39. What des the underlined wrd “reciprcal” in Paragraph 3 prbably mean?
A. Related.B. Tw-way.C. Well-runded.D. Oppsite.
40. What will the authr prbably agree with?
A. Eating r shpping leads t cnsistent feelings f happiness.
B. Our will has greater cntrl ver emtins than ver actins.
C. Happy chemicals make us think abut the things we’re grateful fr.
D. Practicing gratitude frequently prepares us fr lng-term happiness.
41. Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title fr the passage?
A. Prime Yurself t Be HappierB. Share Happiness t Enhance Well-being
C. Why Gratitude Is Imprtant in PsychlgyD. Hw Happy Chemicals Affect Peple’s Thughts

Wuld yu turn dwn the chance t becme a smart ckie? We’ve been lnging fr quick fixes that culd increase ur intelligence (智力). Tday, peple’s hpes lie in brain training apps as a speedy“digital pill”. The mre yu play, the smarter yu will get—r s sme apps tell us. But is this digital-shrtcut all that it seems t be?
The use f games fr serius purpses has becme widespread with the develpment f the Internet and smartphnes. Brain training apps are typical, frequently featured by Apple and Ggle’s app stres. Many f such apps say that they are backed by “science”. Even if there were agreement arund what makes general intelligence, the idea that increasing it wuld be as simple as practising a few mini-games every day ges against ur current discvery abut thinking and learning.
Several majr studies, surveying users acrss a wide variety f apps, have fund that they have little t n effect n users’ perfrmance. A 2021 study by researchers discvered brain training has n significant effect n cgnitive (认知的) functining in the “real wrld”. The psitive effects reprted are limited t the very specific mini-games and tasks, such as memrizing lists f wrds r numbers, r perfrming mental calculatin (心算). S, if yur jb r yur calling in life needs summing quickly r remembering all yur friends’ phne numbers, these apps will d. But if yu are expecting them t imprve yur ability t write a nvel r frm a cmplex (复杂的) spreadsheet, yu have t lk elsewhere. Yet, despite the fact that they hardly wrk, brain training apps play a leading rle, partly because they are regarded t be scientific and partly because users think they are fun.
As a c-creatr f ne f the mst ppular frms f gamificatin (游戏化)nted, what is especially disappinting abut these apps is that they just aren’t that fun—at least, nt cmpared with the varius thughtful bard games and vide games cming ut every day. Puzzle vide games, such as Baba Is Yu and detective games like Return f the Obra Dinn, see players apply their skill at reasning, memry and cncentratin in a far mre challenging and engaging (吸引人的) way.
If yu aren’t int games, simply g fr a walk r learn hw t dance. They are likely t be mre effective than a brain training app in sharpening yur mind. These activities might nt lead t an increased IQ, but they are sure t engage yur brain deeply while having fun—smething I can by n means say f brain training apps.
42. Which f the fllwing wuld the authr prbably agree with?
A. Brain training apps are backed by science.
B. Creativity can be imprved with brain training apps.
C. Gamificatin has little t d with increasing intelligence.
D. Increasing IQ is as simple as practising a few mini-games every day.
43. Accrding t the passage, brain training apps are still ppular because ________.
A. they turn mental exercises int quick games
B. they are cnsidered bth scientific and interesting
C. they are mre effective in shaping ur minds than ther games
D. they have significant effects n the cgnitive functining in the “real wrld”
44. Which wuld be the best title fr the passage?
A. A Smart Ckie r Nt?B. There’s N App fr That
C. What will Games Lead Us t?D. A Digital Pill fr Intelligence

Can a Rbt Really Freestyle?
Engineers at the Gergia Institute f Technlgy, led by Gil Weinberg, have designed the first musical rbt capable f nt nly playing music, but creating it. His name is Shimn. Weinberg, wh is a musician, engineer, and prfessr f musical technlgy, fund himself in a creative rut (俗套) and decided t create a rbt that culd inspire him with new musical ideas. Shimn was trained n a vast data set f everything frm prgressive rck t jazz t rap. His wrks really surprise human listeners.
Up until recent advancements, applicatins f AI (artificial intelligence) have mstly cnsisted f well-defined tasks, but many are cncerned that new technlgy like Shimn culd result in lst jbs fr millins f peple, even thse in creative industry.
While the cncern f an ffing future in which humans are entirely replaced by rbts certainly isn’t unfunded, a much mre likely future is ne in which rbts wrk alngside humans t imprve their wrk. Experts say that AI will actually create jbs fr humans, nt des try them. The Guardian recently reprted that by 2037, AI will create mre than 7 millin new jbs in the healthcare, educatin, and science fields in the UK.
Shimn is shwing us what can happen when rbts dn’t just wrk fr us, but with us. Instead f putting any f ur favrite musicians ut f wrk, rbts will certainly be challenging and inspiring them in new ways. The cperatin between humans and rbts can prduce new and attractive music, leading t nvel musical utcmes. Thanks t the innvatin f Weinberg and his team, rap battles, Jam sessins, and symphny rchestras alike may begin t lk and act cnsiderably different.
