We d nt usually think abut hw ur language wrks. Talking is such a natural, everyday activity that we d nt ften stp t cnsider hw it actually wrks. When we d study ur language, thugh, we are ften surprised that we are able t understand ur cnversatins. Wrds can mean s many different things. Hwever, it turns ut that the speaking situatin helps a lt in making language wrk.
First, the speaking situatin helps make wrds mre particular. Fr example, the wrd “dg” can describe a dg that a speaker saw in a dream. It can als be used t discuss a neighbur’s dg. N language has a separate wrd fr the idea “dg that I saw yesterday” and anther wrd fr the idea “dg that I saw in a dream”. This is because the speaking situatin makes it clear what speakers mean when they use wrds. S, when yu have a cnversatin with yur neighbur, the knwledge that yu have a dg tells yur neighbur what the wrd “dg” prbably means in that situatin.
The speaking situatin als helps make language clearer. Fr example, the wrd “bank” has tw pssible meanings. It can mean “a place where peple keep mney”, but it can als mean “the side f a river”. S the sentence “I went t the bank” is nt clear. It culd mean I went t the side f a river r it culd mean I went t the place where my mney is kept. Hwever, if the speaker is talking abut fishing r ging t the muntains, thers prbably knw that “bank” means “the side f a river”.
The things that speakers say may nt always be clear. Smetimes the wrds are nt very particular, but the speaking situatin can prvide the meaning. Other times wrds may have many meanings. Then the speaking situatin limits the right meaning. This extra knwledge frm the situatin is very imprtant t understand language.
24.The passage is mainly abut .
A.the best time and place t talk t thers
B.hw the speaking situatin helps language wrk
C.what t say in difficult situatins
D.hw ur language wrks
25.Accrding t the passage, we can safely say that .
A.the speaking situatin des nt affect the meaning f wrds
B.speaking is nt very natural fr mst peple
C.the speaking situatin is nt imprtant
D.peple ften d nt cnsider hw talking wrks
26.By using the example f the wrd “dg”, the writer wants t shw that .
A.a wrd may need t be explained in a cnversatin
B.a wrd may have different meanings
C.the speaking situatin helps peple understand the particular meaning f a wrd
D.the meaning f wrds is nt particular
27.Accrding t the passage, we can knw the meaning f the wrd “bank” by referring t .
A.the time and the place where the cnversatin happens
B.the ccupatin f the persn wh uses the wrd
C.earlier r later parts f the cnversatin
D.a reliable dictinary

Hw des an ecsystem(生态系统) wrk? What makes the ppulatins f different species the way they are? Why are there s many flies and s few wlves? T find an answer, scientists have built mathematical mdels f fd webs, nting wh eats whm and hw much each ne eats.
With such mdels, scientists have fund ut sme key principles perating in fd webs. Mst fd webs, fr instance, cnsist f many weak links rather than a few strng nes. When a predatr(捕食性动物) always eats huge numbers f a single prey(猎物), the tw species are strngly linked;when a predatr lives n varius species, they are weakly linked. Fd webs may be dminated by many weak links because that arrangement is mre stable ver the lng term. If a predatr can eat several species, it can survive the extinctin f ne f them. And if a predatr can mve n t anther species that is easier t find when a prey species becmes rare, the switch allws the riginal prey t recver. The weak links may thus keep species frm driving ne anther t extinctin.
Mathematical mdels have als revealed that fd webs may be unstable, where small changes f tp predatrs can lead t big effects thrughut entire ecsystems. In the 1960s, scientists prpsed that predatrs at the tp f a fd web had a surprising amunt f cntrl ver the size f ppulatins f ther species—including species they did nt directly attack.
And unplanned human activities have prved the idea f tp-dwn cntrl by tp predatrs t be true. In the cean, we fished fr tp predatrs, while n land, we killed ff large predatrs such as wlves. These actins have greatly affected the eclgical balance.
Scientists have built an early-warning system based n mathematical mdels. Ideally, the system wuld tell us when t adapt human activities that are pushing an ecsystem tward a breakdwn r wuld even allw us t pull an ecsystem back frm the brderline. Preventin is key, scientists say, because nce ecsystems pass their tipping pint, it is remarkably difficult fr them t return.
28.What have scientists discvered with the help f mathematical mdels f fd webs?
A.The living habits f species in fd webs.
B.The rules gverning fd webs f the ecsystems.
C.The appraches t studying the species in the ecsystems.
D.The differences between weak and strng links in fd webs.
29.A strng link is fund between tw species when a predatr .
A.has a wide fd chice
B.can easily find new prey
C.sticks t ne prey species
D.can quickly mve t anther place
30.What will happen if the ppulatins f tp predatrs in a fd web greatly decline?
A.The prey species they directly attack will die ut.
B.The species they indirectly attack will turn int tp predatrs.
C.The living envirnment f ther species will remain unchanged.
D.The ppulatins f ther species will experience unexpected changes.
31.What cnclusin can be drawn frm the examples in paragraph 4?
A.Uncntrlled human activities greatly upset ecsystems.
B.Rapid ecnmic develpment threatens animal habitats.
C.Species f cmmercial value dminate ther species.
D.Industrial activities help keep fd webs stable.

A.became a failure
