    HowtoUseaModernPublicLibrary
Has it been a while since your last visit to a public library? If so, you may be surprised to learn that libraries have changed for the better. It’s been years since they were dusty little rooms with books. They have transformed themselves into places where you can develop your love of knowledge, meet interesting people, or find out how to start a business.
Checkoutabook. While libraries still loan out(出借) books, you’ll find it easier to get a copy of whatever you’re looking for, thanks to a cooperative network of area libraries. Via such networks, libraries share their books with each other through the use of delivery vehicles. Once the book you’ve requested is delivered to the nearest branch, they will inform you by e-mail, so you can pick it up.
Checkoutotheritems. The library is now a multimedia zone, loaded with information in many formats(载体形式). You can borrow movies on DVDs, music on CDs, and popular magazines. Some libraries even loan out toys and games. If a popular magazine you want isn’t offered and the library keeps a list of such requests, they may bring it in when enough interest is shown.
Jointargetedreadinggroups. Libraries will often hold reading-group sessions targeted to various age groups. Perhaps you’d like to learn a language or improve your English. The library may sponsor a language group you could join. If you have difficulties reading, ask about special reading opportunities. Your library might be able to accommodate you. And you might find it relaxing to bring your small kid to a half-hour Story Time while you sit quietly in a corner with a good book.
Startabusinessusingthehelpofyourlocallibrary. If you want to have a business of your own, your local library can become a launch space for it. In library books and computers, you can find information on starting a business. Many libraries will help you with locally supplied information about business management shared through chambers of commerce(商会) and government agencies, and they will offer printing, faxing and database services you need.
21.Public libraries connected by a cooperative network benefit readers by .
A.sharing their books on the Internet
B.giving access to online reading at a library branch
C.sending a needed book to a library branch nearby
    D.making the checkout procedures diverse
22.According to Paragraph 3, what items may be checked out from a public library?
    A.A magazine and an e-book.
B.A game and an oil painting.
    C.A music CD and a kid’s toy.
D.A DVD and a video player.
23.As is described in Paragraph 4, taking a small kid to a half-hour Story Time allows .
A.the kid to learn a new language
B.the parent to enjoy quiet reading
C.the kid to overcome reading difficulties
D.the parent to meet their program sponsor
    B
We do not usually think about how our language works. Talking is such a natural, everyday activity that we do not often stop to consider how it actually works. When we do study our language, though, we are often surprised that we are able to understand our conversations. Words can mean so many different things. However, it turns out that the speaking situation helps a lot in making language work.
First, the speaking situation helps make words more particular. For example, the word “dog” can describe a dog that a speaker saw in a dream. It can also be used to discuss a neighbour’s dog. No language has a separate word for the idea “dog that I saw yesterday” and another word for the idea “dog that I saw in a dream”. This is because the speaking situation makes it clear what speakers mean when they use words. So, when you have a conversation with your neighbour, the knowledge that you have a dog tells your neighbour what the word “dog” probably means in that situation.
The speaking situation also helps make language clearer. For example, the word “bank” has two possible meanings. It can mean “a place where people keep money”, but it can also mean “the side of a river”. So the sentence “I went to the bank” is not clear. It could mean I went to the side of a river or it could mean I went to the place where my money is kept. However, if the speaker is talking about fishing or going to the mountains, others probably know that “bank” means “the side of a river”.
The things that speakers say may not always be clear. Sometimes the words are not very particular, but the speaking situation can provide the meaning. Other times words may have many meanings. Then the speaking situation limits the right meaning. This extra knowledge from the situation is very important to understand language.
24.The passage is mainly about .
A.the best time and place to talk to others
B.how the speaking situation helps language work
C.what to say in difficult situations
    D.how our language works
25.According to the passage, we can safely say that .
A.the speaking situation does not affect the meaning of words
B.speaking is not very natural for most people
C.the speaking situation is not important
D.people often do not consider how talking works
26.By using the example of the word “dog”, the writer wants to show that .
A.a word may need to be explained in a conversation
B.a word may have different meanings
C.the speaking situation helps people understand the particular meaning of a word
D.the meaning of words is not particular
27.According to the passage, we can know the meaning of the word “bank” by referring to .
A.the time and the place where the conversation happens
B.the occupation of the person who uses the word
C.earlier or later parts of the conversation
    D.a reliable dictionary
    C
How does an ecosystem(生态系统) work? What makes the populations of different species the way they are? Why are there so many flies and so few wolves? To find an answer, scientists have built mathematical models of food webs, noting who eats whom and how much each one eats.
With such models, scientists have found out some key principles operating in food webs. Most food webs, for instance, consist of many weak links rather than a few strong ones. When a predator(捕食性动物) always eats huge numbers of a single prey(猎物), the two species are strongly linked;when a predator lives on various species, they are weakly linked. Food webs may be dominated by many weak links because that arrangement is more stable over the long term. If a predator can eat several species, it can survive the extinction of one of them. And if a predator can move on to another species that is easier to find when a prey species becomes rare, the switch allows the original prey to recover. The weak links may thus keep species from driving one another to extinction.
Mathematical models have also revealed that food webs may be unstable, where small changes of top predators can lead to big effects throughout entire ecosystems. In the 1960s, scientists proposed that predators at the top of a food web had a surprising amount of control over the size of populations of other species—including species they did not directly attack.
And unplanned human activities have proved the idea of top-down control by top predators to be true. In the ocean, we fished for top predators, while on land, we killed off large predators such as wolves. These actions have greatly affected the ecological balance.
Scientists have built an early-warning system based on mathematical models. Ideally, the system would tell us when to adapt human activities that are pushing an ecosystem toward a breakdown or would even allow us to pull an ecosystem back from the borderline. Prevention is key, scientists say, because once ecosystems pass their tipping point, it is remarkably difficult for them to return.
28.What have scientists discovered with the help of mathematical models of food webs?
A.The living habits of species in food webs.
B.The rules governing food webs of the ecosystems.
C.The approaches to studying the species in the ecosystems.
D.The differences between weak and strong links in food webs.
29.A strong link is found between two species when a predator .
    A.has a wide food choice
    B.can easily find new prey
    C.sticks to one prey species
D.can quickly move to another place
30.What will happen if the populations of top predators in a food web greatly decline?
A.The prey species they directly attack will die out.
B.The species they indirectly attack will turn into top predators.
C.The living environment of other species will remain unchanged.
D.The populations of other species will experience unexpected changes.
31.What conclusion can be drawn from the examples in paragraph 4?
A.Uncontrolled human activities greatly upset ecosystems.
B.Rapid economic development threatens animal habitats.
C.Species of commercial value dominate other species.
D.Industrial activities help keep food webs stable.
    D
    (2019·河南八市重点中学联考)
For most of her life, Suanne Laqueur’s passion for storytelling was shown on the dance floor.
Although Laqueur began writing at a young age, dancing always took centre stage. She majored in dance and theatre at Alfred University and taught at her mother’s dance studio in Croton-on-Hudson, New York, for years. But when her mother was ready to retire and an opportunity opened for Laqueur to take over the studio, she realised she had no interest in taking on the business side of her art,“Owning a studio is a lot of work—financially, logistically. I love the teaching, the choreographing(编舞), the staging, but I didn’t want to own it.”
Yet Laqueur’s disinterest in running the studio changed when she became a self-published author. In the fall of 2013, she decided to pursue self-publishing as a way of sharing her first completed novel with friends and family. During the process, she realised that following her true passion—telling stories through writing—made the business of the art worthwhile, and owning that business meant she could direct her writing career however she chose.
Starting with her second self-published novel, she began investing more time in marketing and building her audience. Her investment paid off. Since 2014, Laqueur has self-published six novels, which collectively have hundreds of ratings and reviews. Her 2016 novel stole the show at the 25th Annual Writer’sDigest Self-Published Book Awards, topping more than 2, 300 entries to win the grand prize.
“You have to write the most truthful story to you, and I think self-publishing allows that freedom,” she says.“If you work with traditional publishing, it’s more about what’s marketable. There are trade-offs, which everyone will tell you, but by self-publishing I have control of the book, I have control of the story, and I’m cool with that.”
32.From paragraph 2, we can learn that Laqueur .
A.wanted to own a publishing house
B.didn’t like teaching dancing in fact
C.was a part-time writer when she was young
D.was interested in running her mother’s studio
33.What made Laqueur change her attitude to business?
    A.Her mother’s persuasion.
    B.Self-publishing her novels.
    C.The desire to make money.
    D.Her own passion toward art.
34.Which of the following can best replace the phrase “stole the show” in paragraph 4?
    A.became a failure
    B.was shown to people
    C.got all the attention
    D.was accidentally stolen
35.What can be inferred from what Laqueur’s said in the last paragraph?
A.She enjoys the way of self-publishing.
B.She will never use traditional publishing.
C.Traditional publishing only focuses on the market.
    D.Self-publishing will replace traditional publishing.

    AFewTipsforSelf-Acceptance
We all want it... to accept and love ourselves. But at times it seems too difficult and too far out of reach. 36 Here’s a handful of ways that will set you in the right direction.
    ● 37 Do not follow the people who make you feel not-good-enough. Why do you follow them? Are you hoping that eventually you will feel empowered because your life is better than theirs? Know that your life is your own; you are the only you in this world.
●Forgive yourself for mistakes that you have made. We are often ashamed of our shortcomings, our mistakes and our failures. 38 You will make mistakes, time and time again. Rather than getting caught up in how you could have done better, why not offer yourself a compassionate(有同情心) response?“That didn’t go as planned. But, I tried my best.”
●Recognize all of your strengths. Write them down in a journal. Begin to train your brain to look at strength before weakness. List all of your accomplishments and achievements. You have a job, earned your degree, and you got out of bed today. 39
●Now that you’ve listed your strengths, list your imperfections. Turn the page in your journal. Put into words why you feel unworthy, why you don’t feel good enough. Now, read these words back to yourself. 40 Turn to a page in your journal to your list of strengths and achievements. See how awesome you are?
    A.Feeling upset again?
    B.Where do you start?
C.Nothing is too small to celebrate.
    D.Remember, you are only human.
    E.Set an intention for self-acceptance.
    F.Stop comparing yourself with others.
G.When does the comparison game start?

We stood there together, 41 the lovely table and chairs. They were high-quality pieces of furniture.
“They’re antiques, family heirlooms(传家宝),” our hosts told us. Both husband and wife smiled with satisfaction and obvious affection for these 42 . They invited us to sit and enjoy a meal in this inviting room full of fragile things.
The meal was 43 , and we settled in and grew comfortable. Soon my husband grew a little too 44 and, without thinking, got into a bad habit. He leaned(倚靠)back in his chair, far enough to lift the front legs off the floor.
Oh no. Have I mentioned my husband is a particularly large man? It made a 45 sound and an even worse sight—that beautiful antique chair was 46 and useless.
My husband and I both 47 sincerely. Our kind hosts were obviously very sad. But they insisted they would have no problem repairing the damage. Then they actually pulled up another of the antique chairs and 48 my husband to sit in it.

Sometimes we have to make that kind of choice. The fact is, other people don’t always value what we value as we value it. They don’t always act 52 . If we value people, we’d better hold 53 to our treasures and be ready to love others, 54 it costs us something we love.

Rex watched the dust cloud around his bare feet as he walked up the path for the river in the summer sunshine. As he came within view of the farmhouse, he saw his mother working in the vegetable garden. She was a hard worker, but when she had a moment to spare, she spent it on her little flower garden in the front yard.
Suddenly, something in the front yard caught Rex’s attention. His mother jumped up from the vegetable patch(小块土地) and ran toward her flowers.“Scat! Get out of here, you old turkeys!” There, in her flower garden, a flock of turkeys ruined the flowers. Rex ran to help his mother, shooing(赶走) them back to Mr Blake’s farm.
“Go back home!” Rex’s mother shouted, her face red.The turkeys waddled single file, ruining every plant in their path.“Rex, chase those turkeys back to where they belong. Then we will prepare dinner for you and your father.” She sadly looked at the ruined flowers.
Rex quickly drove the turkeys back down the road, yelling. As the turkeys entered Mr Blake’s yard, Rex grabbed a rock lying on the ground and threw the rock with all his strength to give them a good scare. As a result, Rex found he killed the largest of Mr Blake’s turkeys.
What was he going to do? Mr Blake would be very angry. He felt frightened the moment he thought of Mr Blake’s angry face. Looking around, he realised no one had seen him throw the rock. He did not have the courage to face Mr Blake. Without another thought, Rex grabbed the dead turkey and hid it in the bushes. He turned and ran home as fast as he could, hoping that no one saw the truth.
His mother praised him for his quick work with the turkeys, not noticing the worry in Rex’s heart. As the worry welled up inside him, tears filled his eyes.
    “What’s wrong?” his mother asked.
He ran to her arms, sobbing(啜泣) as he told the whole story, complete with his fear of Mr Blake’s anger.
    Finally, ashissobsquieted, hismother

M: I’ll think it over. Maybe I can get this coat somewhere else for $25.
W: Wait a minute. Ah... I will give it for $25.
    (Text8)
W: You missed my class yesterday, didn’t you? I must tell you about our trip to an art exhibition.
M: Oh, yes, please, Mrs Green. I really want to go. When is it?
W: The exhibition opens next Wednesday, but there is a special day for schools on Friday. We’re going then.
M: What time will we leave?
    W: At one forty-five.
M: Right. How much do we have to pay?
W: That’s two pounds to go into the exhibition, and three pounds for the bus.
M: Will we need money for food?
W: No, there’ll be free food and drinks for everyone there. One of the artists is going to give a talk about her work in the exhibition. I think we’ll all enjoy it.
    M: Great.
    (Text9)
    W: Hey, Nick.
M: Hi, Susan. How is it going?
W: Good, but my best friend Kate just told me that she had to work. So she cancelled our plans to go shopping. Now I’m looking for something to do today.
M: I’m going to the movies with my sister. Would you like to join us?
W: Well, that depends. What are you going to see?
    M: I want to see a comedy.
W: Oh, no, thank you. It is a little bit boring.
M: OK, how about a documentary? There are a couple of good ones playing now.
W: Are you kidding me? Those are even worse. Can’t we just watch an action movie?
M: No, I don’t find action movies very interesting. The actors and the music are good, but dialogues are always silly.
W: Well, maybe you should go to the movies without me.
M: I have an idea. Why don’t you give my friend Helen a call? She loves action movies. She once saw one three times in the theater.
W: Oh, I remember her. We met at your birthday party last year. Okay, I’ll give her a call.
    (Text10)
M: Today we are visiting what is probably the most unusual animal shelter in Britain. Don’t expect to see any lions, elephants and sharks here. What it does have is a lot of very lucky cows, pigs, sheep and chickens. Why lucky? Well, these poor creatures have basically been rescued from becoming your lunch by animal rights groups. They are able to live the rest of their lives happily here in Woodhill Shelter. The shelter was set up by Jill and Ben Smith. Neither of them eats any animal products, but lives instead on a plant-based diet. The idea to build a shelter first occurred to them in 2011, and it was two years later that they put the idea into practice. Three years afterwards, they published a book called OurFarmFamily, which was about the stories of the animals on the farm. All the farm workers are volunteers without pay, but get free lunch and coffee in return for their work. However, they think it is truly a rewarding experience.

    写作
    第一节
    Dear friends,
I am Li Hua, president of the Student Union of Hongxing Middle School. It’s my great honour to be here, sharing this moment with our fellow friends from English.
It has been a week since you came to our school for the exchange programme, which has benefited all of us. The past week witnessed our growth and friendship. It is not only your enthusiasm but also your teamwork and good spirits that impress us. After the exchange activities, we now have a better understanding of each other on a whole new level.
On behalf of all the students in our school, I sincerely hope our friendship lasts forever. I wish you a safe and happy journey home.
    Thank you.
    第二节
Finally, ashissobsquieted, hismother pulled back to look at him,“Rex, take the bird to Mr Blake and tell him what happened. You will never have peace if you don’t face him. Mr Blake deserves to hear the truth.” The walk to Mr Blake’s house was difficult. Leaving his mother in the yard, Rex stepped to the front door with the dead turkey. He knocked, hoping Mr Blake wouldn’t answer. But the door opened.
“Hi, MrBlake,”Rexhandedhimthedeadbird. When he finished telling the whole story of how he killed the turkey by mistake. Rex looked at the ground, too frightened to watch the reaction. There was a moment’s pause, and then Mr Blake said with a smile,“That’s all right. We’ll eat it for dinner today.” Rex couldn’t believe what he had heard. As he ran home, he felt as if a rock had been lifted from his shoulders. He realised that doing the right thing was truly easy in the end.
