In Fllw yur Dreams, Simnva tld a heartfelt stry hnring the lve between a mther and her sn—using nly the sand in her hands. In nly a cuple f minutes, a phne turns int a huse, then int tw faces, then int a by lking ut f the windw. . .

Frd, the mtr cmpany, has annunced it has rented a pair f Bstn Dynamics’ rbtic dgs. Frd is using the rbtic dgs t help it 3D-map its Van Dyke Plant. “By having the rbts in ur factry, we can see what it actually lks like nw and build a new engineering mdel. That digital mdel is then used when we need t change the equipment in the factry fr new prducts,” said Mark Gderis, Frd’s digital engineering manager.
The rbtic dgs are used t recrd 360-degree images f areas in the factry that are difficult t get t by using a traditinal 3D camera. They’re equipped with five cameras and can climb steps and kneel (跪) dwn t get int hard-t-reach places. Their fur legs allw the rbts t walk like a dg, arund the factry at speeds f up t 3 miles per hur — s they’re nt very quick. Besides, the battery lasts fr nly tw hurs.
Mark said that the ld way f scanning (扫描) with a camera culd take tw weeks, yet using the rbtic dgs cuts that time in half. It als used t cst $300,000 t d it the ld way. The rbtic dgs are cheaper, but Frd didn’t say by hw much.
At present, the rbtic dgs are fllwed by their handler, Paula Wiebelhaus, wh manages the rbtic dgs thrugh a cntrller with a screen that sees what the dgs see. But in the near future, Frd wants t prgram the rbtic dgs t g t different parts f the factry and reprt back what they see withut being fllwed by a human. They can als ask fr a ride n the back f a mbile rbt that Frd has named Scuter. Like the rbtic dgs, it’s als taking 3D scans f its envirnment.

We’ve seen it used numerus times, frm the cver f publicatins t speeches by wrld leaders: “Data (数据) is the new il.” But the analgy (类比) shuld stp there.
Duglas Hfstadter, a philspher, ntes that this cmmnly-heard analgy belngs t thse n which nnspecialists are likely t base their understandings f scientific ideas. Such analgies are prbably easy t remember but in a certain cntext they can lead t cmplete dead ends.
There is a fixed amunt f il n ur planet t be extracted (提取). Unlike il, increasing amunts f data are being prduced at a rate that’s hard t fathm: in the next tw years, 40 zettabytes f data will be created—an amunt s large that there is n useful apprach t shwing r describing its size effectively.
The value f il cmes frm its limited amunts and the difficulty f extracting it. Hwever, data is smething quite different. Fr example, data is bth created and used by autnmus cars interacting with cnnected equipment in a smart city. In San Francisc, there are 470,000 registered cars. If just 25% f thse cars were autnmus, the amunt f data prduced yearly wuld be the same as abut 300,000,000 Internet users. Imagine what will happen if this situatin cvers a whle cuntry.
Oil is als a single-use supply, while data can be reused and shared fr new purpses. Recently, data frm a test f drugs cmmnly used t treat heart prblems was reused, leading t the discvery f a secnd use fr the medicine: destrying a prtein (蛋白质) related t nearly half f all cancers. In cmparisn, adding mre il desn’t result in getting better quality il.
S the next time yu hear smene say this analgy, ask them when the earth will have n mre data t extract and see if yu can get an answer.
32. What’s Hfstadter’s attitude t the famus analgy?
A. Supprtive.B. Objective.C. Negative.D. Uncncerned.
33. What des the underlined wrd “fathm” in Paragraph 3 prbably mean?
A. Understand.B. Quicken.C. Discver.D. Reuse.
34. Why des the authr take San Francisc as an example?
A. T explain it has busy public transprtatin.
B. T suggest it emplys many autnmus cars.
C. T prve it is in great demand f updated data.
D. T shw it alne creates large amunts f data.
35. What can we learn abut the value f data accrding t Paragraph 5?
A. It may prevent sme cancers frm happening.
B. It prmtes scientific creatins and advances.
C. It inspires healthy cmpetitin in the drug market.
D. It makes medical treatment accessible t peple.

Lng rad trips shuldn’t just be abut endurance (耐力); they shuld als be abut learning hw t pass the time withut a screen. S, challenge yurselves t a screen-free rad trip the next time yu g smewhere as a family. 40
