Learning any language is hard, but learning English can be especially challenging. Why? Because native speakers use the language in ways that textbks culd never describe. In particular, wrds that British peple use cause many language students t scratch their heads.
Here’s an example: Yu verhear a Britn calling smene a “wazzck”. But what exactly is a wazzck? This wrd, in fact, means a flish persn, althugh there’s nthing abut it that wuld help yu guess that. There are many strange terms like this in British English — the Oxfrd English Dictinary wuld be much smaller withut these dd usages filling its pages.
Hw can these dd wrds be explained? Part f the answer is the British sense f humr. Britns dn’t like t take things t seriusly, and this is evident thrugh many British wrds and phrases. Fr example, t “spend a penny” means t use the bathrm. It refers t the days when peple had t pay a penny t use a public tilet.
In an interview fr the BBC’s website, British linguist David Crystal suggested there may be histrical reasns fr the large number f dd wrds and phrases in British English. He thinks that they began in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. This was a great age fr the theater, when Shakespear e and ther writers wrked hard t keep up with the demand fr new plays. The theater’s ppularity als created an incentive t invent new wrds. With this in mind, perhaps Shakespeare and his peers are t blame fr unusual British wrds such as “cdswallp” and “balderdash” — which bth, mean “nnsense”.
While these strange wrds may be cnfusing t nn-native speakers, they certainly make studying English a lt mre interesting.
    24. Accrding t the text, why may nn-native speakers find it mre challenging t learn English?
    A. Dictinaries are t cmplicated t understand.
    B. The English vcabulary is t large fr them t learn.
    C. A large number f strange expressins cnfuse them.
    D. The English textbks they use are usually ut f date.
    25. With the example f “the Oxfrd English Dictinary” in Paragraph 2, the authr intends t .
    A. stress the large number f strange terms
    B. explain the rigin f the strange phrases
    C. shw British peple’s attitude twards dd phrases
    D. shw the usefulness f the Oxfrd English Dictinary
    26. Which f the fllwing wrds has the similar meaning t the underlined wrd “incentive” in Paragraph 4?
    A. cncernB. inspiratinC. applicatinD. pinin
    27. What is the tne f the authr in writing the article?
    A. Aerius.B. Anxius.C. Indifferent.D. Humrus.
    【答案】24. C 25. A 26. B 27. D
    【解析】
    【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章讲述的是英国英语中出现大量奇怪单词的原因。
    【24题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“Because native speakers use the language in ways that textbks culd never describe. In particular, wrds that British peple use cause many language students t scratch their heads.(因为母语为英语的人使用这种语言的方式是教科书无法描述的。特别是,英国人使用的单词会让许多语言专业的学生挠头)”以及第二段“Here’s an example: Yu verhear a Britn calling smene a “wazzck”. But what exactly is a wazzck? This wrd, in fact, means a flish persn, althugh there’s nthing abut it that wuld help yu guess that.(举个例子:你无意中听到一个英国人叫某人“wazzck”。但wazzck到底是什么?事实上,这个词的意思是愚蠢的人,尽管它没有什么能帮助你猜测的)”可推知,母语非英语的人之所以会觉得学习英语很难是因为许多奇怪的词对他们来说毫无意义,会让他们觉得非常的困惑。故选C。
    【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Here’s an example: Yu verhear a Britn calling smene a “wazzck”. But what exactly is a wazzck? This wrd, in fact, means a flish persn, althugh there’s nthing abut it that wuld help yu guess that. 【26题详解】
词句猜测题。根据倒数第二段“This was a great age fr the theater, when Shakespear e and ther writers wrked hard t keep up with the demand fr new plays.(他认为它们始于16世纪末和17世纪初。这对戏剧来说是一个伟大的时代,莎士比亚和其他作家努力满足对新剧的需求) ”以及划线单词句中的“The theater’s ppularity (剧院的受欢迎程度)”以及“t invent new wrds(发明新词)”可知,16世纪末和17世纪初对戏剧来说是一个伟大的时代,剧院也同时受到了大众的欢迎,从而激发了人们发明新词。所以划线单词的意思为“启发,激发”。故选B。
    【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段的“In particular, wrds that British peple use cause many language students t scratch their heads.(特别是,英国人使用的单词会让许多语言专业的学生挠头)”,第三段的“Fr example, t “spend a penny” means t use the bathrm. It refers t the days when peple had t pay a penny t use a public tilet.(例如,“花一分钱”的意思是使用卫生间。它指的是人们必须花一分钱才能使用公共厕所的日子)”以及全文可知,作者在文中用了诙谐的单词,举了一些有趣的例子。由此可知,作者写这篇文章的语气是幽默的。故选D。

Laynie had her wn watering can s she culd “help” me in the garden. One day, after everything was watered, she said, “We frgt smething, Brad.” She ran t the fence and started sprinkling water n anther spt. I walked ver and saw a fresh patch f dirt near the fence.
“Did yu plant smething there?” I asked.
“Yes,” she said. “I’m grwing a pencil.”
She stpped sprinkling. “My purple pencil gt t small, s I planted it, the way yu said."
    “But, Laynie—”
“Hw lng des it take t grw a new pencil?”
I shuld have explained things right then, but I just muttered, “Uh... I never grew ne befre.”
Later I gt what seemed like a great idea. I dug up Laynie’s pencil and “planted” a brand-new purple pencil. I fixed it with the erase r sticking up.
Laynie was really excited when she saw it. “My pencil grew!” she shuted. She drew pictures with it all afternn.
A few days later, Laynie was watering the same spt. “Hw lng des it take t grw crayns?” she asked. “I can’t wait!” she squealed, giggling... She squatted dwn and whispered, “Grw. Cme n, grw.”
Tw days later, new crayns spruted their pint y little heads, thanks t me. Laynie jumped up and dwn and yelled, “They lk like flwers!” She “picked” them and ran int the huse. Grandma thught Laynie was cute when she claimed that she had grwn these things. I just kept my muth shut! Actually, it was fun trying t think f what shuld grw frm Laynie’s “seeds.” And it was cl t see her get excited.
One day I saw her patting dwn sme dirt, s I knew she’d just planted smething. “What is it this time?” I asked.
“It’s Mlly.” I gasped. Mlly was Laynie’s gldfish! “She jumped ut f her bwl again,” Laynie said. “Grandma said we didn’t find her in time.” Then Laynie picked up her little watering can and started sprinkling that spt. My heart drpped t my feet when she asked, “Hw lng des it take t grw a gldfish, Brad?” She knelt dwn t whisper “Grw, Mlly. Grw!” befre she skipped back t the huse.

Then I explained the whle stry t her. “N!” she screamed, red-faced. With a big shve, she kncked everything ff the table. But the wrst part hadn’t cme yet. “Laynie,” I said sftly. “Mlly isn’t ging t grw either.” All f a sudden, she burst int tears.
I hugged her tightly and suggested, “Hw abut a funeral fr Mlly”. Laynie buried Mlly and planted sme “frget-me-nt” seeds n the grave. She watered them every mrning. One day I saw Laynie carrying her watering can t the crner f the yard. “I’m grwing ‘basketballs’ fr yu,” she annunced, sprinkling a new patch f dirt. When she was gne, I dug up the spt with my bare hands. The “basketball seeds” were small and light, and they smelled like... ranges! When I finally stpped laughing, I replanted them. Then I headed fr the huse t explain gardening t Laynie ne... mre... time.

    2.续写线索:背对栅栏思索——决定告诉真相——拿出偷偷种过的东西——女儿因无法接受真相而哭泣——提议给金鱼办葬礼——女儿种了勿忘我——女儿种篮球——向女儿解释园艺
