When peple call the htline, they can hear happy vices f children f different ages sharing psitive(积极的) messages. Fr example, pressing l brings ideas fr peple wh are “feeling mad r nervus”. Helpful suggestins include: “listen t music” r “g and get a ckie”. Pressing 2 results in “wrds f encuragement and life advice”. Ms. Martin thught the prject wuld nly attract interest frm peple near the schl. But in its first six weeks, the htline gt 5 millin calls frm arund the wrld. It has becme very ppular with stressed adults, patients in hspitals, and thers wh just want t hear the happy vices f children. Fr Martin and Weiss, the prject shws students that small acts can have a big influence. “If yu have an idea, just try t d it and see what happens,” Weiss says. Students nw knw that they have amazing pwer. They’re already thinking abut new messages t recrd fr the Pep Tc Htline.

Plite Speech
Different cuntries and cultures have their wn rules f plite speech. When learning a language, it is imprtant t learn rules f plite speech f the culture in which that language is spken.
In spken English, indirect questins are generally cnsidered mre frmal (正式的) and plite than direct questins. Indirect questins are questins with extra (额外的) wrds and phrases t make yur questins sfter and less demanding (强求的). Try using sme f these phrases t create indirect questins, “D yu knw…”, “Can/Culd yu tell me…”. When “Where is the bus stp? “ becmes “D yu knw where the bus stp is?”, it sunds much mre plite.
It is said that it is easy t recgnize (辨别) an implite questin when yu’re the persn being asked the questin, but nt s easy when yu’re the ne asking the questin. What makes a questin implite? Mst peple wuld cnsider a questin implite if it’s asking them fr infrmatin that they dn’t really want t disclse t thers. Fr example, in many cultures, it is nt plite t ask questins abut mney. “Hw much mney d yu get every mnth?” is nt gd. When unsure, it is best t remember that, if yu are meeting smene fr the first time, r yu dn’t knw a persn very well yet, keep n the tpics like sprts, music, hbbies, r ther general nes. Avid tpics which can be mre persnal t smene, such as mney, family, age, health, plitics, religin (宗教) .
In the English language, “magic wrds” are very imprtant in plite speech. “Please” is smetimes referred t as the “magic wrd”. When eating ut in a restaurant, yu’d better say “Check the bill, please.” instead f “Bring me the bill, waiter!” Anther magic wrd (r phrase) is “thank yu”. When using English t ask fr things r infrmatin, it is therefre imprtant t use the magic wrds “please” and “thank yu”.
Plite speech is always welcmed, s why nt use it? Even if yu haven’t used these plite wrds and phrases all yur life, it’s never t late t start. Practice hlding plite cnversatins with family and clse friends until yu’re cmfrtable. and it feels natural. Gradually, speaking plitely will becme secnd nature (天性) t yu thugh it might seem s difficult t speak plitely. Try t speak plitely in different situatins. This will help yu cmmunicate better with ther peple.

Are yu sitting in a classrm right nw? Lk arund. What d yu see? Yu prbably see pencils, erasers, chalk, and ther everyday nrmal things. These little inventins that we never ntice are very imprtant parts f ur daily lives.
Take Pst-it ntes fr example. Thse are the little yellw ntes that are sticky(黏的) n ne side. Yu just write smething n ne side f a nte, and stick the nte t smething. That’s very cnvenient, because it’s nt easy t lse yur nte. Yu can put the nte wherever yu Pst-it ntes want. Besides, the ntes are very cheap. The man wh invented Pst-it ntes was Dr. Spencer Silver. Hw abut Velcr? Velcr is useful because it can hld just abut anything tgether. The scientist wh invented Velcr gt the idea when he went hiking. He nticed that little burrs were sticking t his clthes. He thught that he culd make a clthing material that had similar tiny hks. His idea wrked, and he created Velcr.
Anther inventin is aluminum fil(铝箔). Aluminum is a kind f metal. Aluminum fil is a very thin sheet f metal. A piece f aluminum fil is similar t a piece f paper. We use aluminum fil t pack things, t ck things, aluminum fil and t wrap(包裹) fd. There are quite a few ther things that we use it fr.
These little inventins have made life easier. Every time yu use sme small bject like a pen r a paper clip, remember that it was invented by sme clever persn a lng time ag.
