    [2023·贵阳四校高三联考二]NASA astrnaut Bruce McCandless Ⅱ has died. Yu may nt knw his name, but yu've prbably seen him in ne f the mst famus pictures ever taken in space. In 1984, McCandless carried a jet­pwered backpack and flew away frm the shuttle, by himself, untethered (不被绳索捆束的), with the Earth as a backgrund. It was the first time that an astrnaut had ever flated freely in space, and McCandless helped develp the technlgy.
    Bruce McCandless had been an astrnaut fr a lng time befre he first flew in space abard the shuttle. He was ne f the nes wh cmmunicated with the crew f Apll 11. While he was waiting his turn t fly in space, he helped design what became t be knwn as the Manned Maneuvering Unit — a backpack prpulsin device that gave astrnauts mbility fr extravehicular (舱外的) activities utside the shuttle. McCandless first went t space in 1984 abard the shuttle Challenger and tk these jet­pwered backpacks alng. During the missin, McCandless climbed int the 300­pund cntraptin (奇特的装置) and slwly eased ut f the shuttle's carg bay as cntrllers lked n.

    By the end f that spacewalk, he had mved little mre than 300 feet away frm the shuttle when the famus picture was taken.
