One f the ldest arts which dates back t the Han Dynasty has been disappearing frm the stage. Different frm films, the shadw play needs mre attentin. In the past years, Chinese artists have been trying t help it survive. Their effrt has gt encuragement and supprt frm the gvernment. In 2011, the shadw puppet play was added t UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
Mst f the puppets were made f leathers frm animals, like dnkeys and sheep. The leathers must be carefully chsen, and then peple make them smth. When the leathers becme smth enugh, the artists wuld paint the characters n it, and then cut them ut with different tls. The bdy parts f the puppets are separately cut ut and jined tgether, s that they culd have 24 mvable jints. When I was tld t play fr a drama cmpetitin, I became nervus. I had never dne anything like this befre. But after reading Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, I was excited abut what was t cme. The stry was great and the sentences were s funny. I wanted t give it a g.
I was playing Sir Tby Belch, a very funny ld knight (骑士). I had t remember a lt f sentences and very funny ld wrds. I wrked hard in rder t act well, like a real knight frm the ld days. But the mst difficult jb was t be funny in all my acting. This is quite different frm the way I am in real life.
“OK. It’s time t be a different me nw,” I said t myself. At first, I culdn’t d anything naturally. I didn’t knw what t d when acting in this silly way. But I always tld myself that I was Sir Tby nw and I shuld frget wh I really was. Even when I was in the bath, I was thinking abut Sir Tby’s wrds and actins and trying t d everything like Sir Tby did.
The cmpetitin day finally came. When it was my turn t perfrm, I tk a deep breath and began my part. I tried hard t make my wrds clear enugh t be understd and my actins funny enugh t make everybdy laugh. When the results were finally read ut, I immediately knew we had wn first prize. I made it.
Frm this experience, I’ve cme t knw that I can be a different persn. It desn’t mean I`ve changed my persnality, but I can d smething I had never imagined pssible.
