Just abut 50 years ag, needing mney t supprt my family—my nvels weren’t best-sellers-I had the idea f taking the lngest train trip imaginable and writing a travel bk abut it. The trip was imprvisatinal (即兴的). I didn’t have a credit card. I had n idea where I’d be staying nr hw lng this trip wuld take. And I’d never written a travel bk befre. I hped my trip wuldn’t suffer a lt, thugh it was bviusly a leap in the dark.
I set ff with ne small bag cntaining clthes, a map f Asia, a travel guidebk and sme travelers’ cheques, I was ften incnvenienced, smetimes threatened, nw and then disturbed fr bribes, ccasinally laid up with fd pisning—all this vivid detail fr my narrative.
What I repeated in the mre than fur-mnth trip was the pleasure f the sleeping car. Writing n bard the Khyber Mail t Lahre in Pakistan, “The rmance assciated with the sleeping car cmes frm the fact that it is extremely private, cmbining the best features f a cupbard with frward mvement. Whatever drama is being shwn in this mving bedrm is heightened by the landscape passing the windw. . .” A train is a carrier that allws residence.
I wrte The Great Railway Bazaar n my return in 1974, and it appeared t gd reviews and quick sales. That’s the past. Nthing is the same. All travel is time-related. All such trips are singular and unrepeatable. It’s nt just that the steam trains f Asia are gne, but much f the peace and rder is gne. Wh’d risk an Iranian train nw r take a bus thrugh Afghanistan?
But I’ve been surprised by sme f the mre recent develpments in travel. I rde n Chinese trains fr a year and wrte Riding the Irn Rster, but nw China has much cleaner and swifter trains and mdernized destinatins. A traveler tday culd take the same trip I tk in1986-87 and prduce a cmpletely different bk.
All travel bks are dated. That’s their fault that they’re utdated, and it’s their virtue that they preserve smething f the past that wuld therwise be lst.

    C. He culdn’t write anther bestseller. D. Transprtatin and travel had changed a lt.
    27. Which f the fllwing statements wuld the authr mst likely agree with?

Happiness, as I see it, cmprises five elements: spiritual well-being (meaning and purpse), physical well-being (nutritin, exercise), intellectual well-being (curisity, deep learning), relatinal well-being (kindness and genersity), and emtinal well-being (cultivating psitive emtins). As an interdependent aggregate f these five elements f SPIRE. happiness is abut much mre than experiencing pleasure.
As Aristtle put it, happiness is the ultimate purpse f life, meaning hw we spend ur everyday lives is ultimately guided by what we think wuld make us happier. This is nt a gd r a bad thing. It simply is, like the law f nature. Even peple wh are tirelessly wrking fr an imprtant cause, fr example, t get rid f wrld hunger, are ding it because they find their wrk meaningful. Meaning is an element f happiness.
One barrier t happiness has t d with the expectatin that happiness is an unbrken chain f psitive emtins. This expectatin, hwever, prevents peple frm experiencing happiness because painful emtins dn’t g away but grw strnger when we reject them.
The secnd barrier has t d with equating happiness with success, It’s a cmmnly held belief that happiness can be attained by achieving certain gals, like mney r fame. Peple tend t think if they finally find success, they will autmatically becme happy.
The third barrier has t d with the way peple pursue happiness. We want t be happy fr many reasns. After all, we are cnstantly tld that happiness is gd fr ur health, relatinships, and wrk utcmes. Yet, if I wake up in the mrning and decide t pursue happiness straight, I will becme less happy.
But hw? Indirectly. As is knwn, if yu lk up at the sun directly, yu’ll hurt yurself. But if yu take the same sun rays and break them dwn, yu’ll enjy the clrs f a rainbw. Similarly, pursuing happiness directly can hurt us; pursuing it indirectly—by breaking it dwn int smething like the SPIRE elements—can cntribute t ur well-being. Starting a meditatin practice, exercising, perfrming acts f kindness, learning smething new, r expressing gratitude fr what we have are all indirect ways f pursuing happiness.

    C. Ging after happiness directly makes ne feel happy.

Yu are what yu eat—and what yu eat may be encded in yur DNA. Studies have indicated that yur geneties play a rle in determining the fds yu find delicius r disgusting. “Everything has a genetic cmpnent, even if it’s small,” says Janne Cle, a geneticist and a prfessr at the University f Clrad Schl f Medicine. “We knw there is sme genetic cntributin t why we eat the fds we eat. Can we take the next step and actually shw the exact psitin f the regins in the genme (染色体)?”
A new research led by Cle has gtten a step clser. Thrugh a large-scale genmics analysis, her team has identified 481 genme regins that were directly linked t dietary patterns and fd preferences. The findings were presented at the American Sciety fr Nutritin’s annual flagship cnference.
They were based n a 2020 Nature Cmmunicatins study by Cle and her clleagues that used data frm the U.K. Bibank, a public database f the genetic and health infrmatin f 500,000 participants. By scanning genmes, the new analysis was able t hme in n 194 regins assciated with dietary patterns and 287 linked t specific fds such as fruit, cheese, fish, tea and alchl.
“This study had a huge number f subjects, s that’s really pwerful.” says Mnica Dus. an assciate prfessr at the University f Michigan, wh wasn’t a part f the new research but studies the relatinship between genes and nutritin. “The ther thing that I thught was really great is that they have s many different characteristics that they’re measuring in respect t diet. They had chlesterl, the bdy, sciecnmic backgrunds.”
As the research advances, Dus says such genme analyses culd pssibly help health care prviders—and even plicymakers—address larger issues that affect fd access and health. “Instead f trying t bsess ver telling peple t eat this r that, a mre pwerful interventin is t link it t making sure there aren’t ‘fd deserts’ r t make sure that there’s a higher minimum wage—things that have a brader impact,” she says.
    32. What is the purpse f Cle’s new research?
    A. T encde the rle f DNA in determining fd chices.
    B. T select genetic cmpnents tightly related t fd cnsumptin.
    C. T figure ut the relatinship between genetics and fd preferences.
    D. T identify specific regins in the genme related t fd preferences.
    33. What’s paragraph 3 mainly abut?
    A. The prcess f the study.B. The findings f the study.
    C. The data-surce f the study.D. The significance f the study.
    34. What des Mnica Dus mean in the text?
    A. The subjects f the study are pwerful.
    B. The research team studied many aspects linking t diet.
    C. The genme analyses have n prspect in the future.
    D. Peple’s wage shuld be raised because f “fd deserts”.
    35. Which f the fllwing can be the best title f the text?
    A. What Yu Eat Impacts Yur Health
    B. What Yu Eat Frms Yur Dietary Pattern
    C. Yur Genes May Determine Yur Nutritinal Need
    D. Yur Genes May Influence What Yu Like t Eat

根据整个文章的第一句话“Satisfy yur teens” appetite fr the unusual in Bristl with classic shpping and immersive art.
根据第一段的“I hped my trip wuldn’t suffer a lt, thugh it was bviusly a leap in the dark. ”以及前面的“I didn’t have a credit card. I had n idea where I’d be staying nr hw lng this trip wuld take. And I’d never written a travel bk befre. ”可知, 这次火车旅行和写书的经历对作者来说都是从未有过的体验, 他期望旅途不要遭受太多 (苦难), 说明他预料到旅途的辛苦。
    25. B 【解析】细节理解题。根据第三段的“The rmance assciated with the sleeping car cmes frm the fact that it is extremely private”可知, 作者认为sleeping car十分隐蔽, 能提供让人安心的隐私。
根据后文的“All travel is time-related. All such trips are singular and unrepeatable. It’s nt just that the steam trains f Asia are gne, but much f the peace and rder is gne. ”可知, 作者认为交通方式和旅行本身都随着社会的发展而变化了很多。

    29. C 【解析】作者态度判断题。根据第二段第二、三句“This is nt a gd r a bad thing. It simply is, like the law f nature. ”可知, 这不是一件好的或者坏的事情, 它只是像自然法则一样。这里作者对影响我们如何度过每一天的生活的想法——以我们认为会让自己感到更快乐的事情为导向, 持有客观中立态度。
    30. D 【解析】细节理解题。根据第四自然段“The secnd barrier has t d with equating happiness with success”可知, 通向幸福的第二障碍是将幸福和成功等同起来, 所以A错。根据第三自然段“This expectatin, hwever, prevents peple frm experiencing happiness because painful emtins dn’t g away but grw strnger when we reject them. ”可知, 这种期待阻止人们体验幸福。因为当我们拒绝痛苦情感时, 它们不会消失反而会增强, 所以B错。根据第五自然段“Yet, if I wake up in the mrning and decide t pursue happiness straight, I will becme less happy. ”可知, 如果我早上醒来并决定直接追求幸福, 我并没有那么开心, 所以C错。根据最后一段“pursuing it indirectly—by breaking it dwn int smething like the SPIRE elements can cntribute t ur well-being.
