Gerge de Mestral, a Swiss electrical engineer, is the inventr f Velcr®. Hw he came t the idea f actually making this thing that we call Velcr is a truly incredible stry.
One fine mrning in 1948, Mestral went fr a walk with his dg. After returning frm the walk, he fund that sme seeds get stuck t the dg’s fur. Hwever, the man’s attentin was turned t his wn trusers, where many similar seeds als attached.
Upn clser examinatin, he bserved that there were many small hks in the seeds that stuck firmly t the lps in the fabric f his trusers. The first idea fr what wuld eventually becme Velcr struck him like a lightning. If he culd artificially recreate the same thing, by making pairs f hks-and-lps that stick t each ther firmly, then there wuld be almst n need t tie things up all the time t secure them, nr wuld zippers(拉链), which were quite ppular in thse days, be necessary any lnger. He decided t call the prduct he frmed Velcr®.
Like many inventins, Velcr® als faced a great deal f criticism, but Mestral std by his design and cntinued t make structural changes t enhance its bnding strength. He wrked with a Frenchman t cme up with a perfect hk -and-lp device. Mestral patented Velcr® in 1955.
Velcr didn’t d t well initially; much f that was due t its lack f aesthetic(美学的) appeal. It came in dull clrs and ften lked quite “unattractive”. But sn, even NASA helped t bst Velcr®’s image by using it in a lt f equipment that went int space alng with astrnauts.

If yu’ve ever driven acrss the United States f America, yu have passed beneath the wings f a curageus sngbird — smaller than yur palm, light as yur change pcket, feathered in bright blue and yellwish-brwn — called the cliff swallw (崖燕). Where ther animals flee the human ftprint, cliff swallws dn’t. They shuld prperly be called the bridge swallw, fr ur steel spans have furnished it with mre nesting sites. Once a bird f the western muntains, in the last century cliff swallws have spread nt the Great Plains and acrss them, making their mud nests under bridges, wrks f birds’ engineering n less impressive than ur wn.
Fr the last fur decades Brwn has paid annual visits t mre than tw hundred nesting sites in Nebraska, trying t figure ut what makes swallw scieties success r fail. “Ninety-eight percent f cliff swallws in western Nebraska,” Brwn said; “are within fifty feet f a rad.”
Near a rad, f curse, is the mst dangerus place an animal can live. When Brwn began studying swallws in the 1980s, he ften picked up dead swallws n the rads, wings brken and heads crushed (压变形). Hwever, Brwn fund swallw radkill had been decreasing. By 2011 it had drpped t fur. Smehw swallws had becme harder t kill.
He fund his answer. When he stretched a tape measure frm the birds’ shulders t their utermst feathers, he fund car struck swallws had lnger wings than the average bird he caught in his nets. Brwn immediately understd the significance. Traffic was weeding slwer lng-winged swallws frm the ppulatin and favring the quicker, shrt-winged nes -Darwinian selectin in actin.
“Centuries ag ... cliff swallws had existed largely beynd human influence; nw they were s invlved in ur wrld that ur infrastructure (基础设施) had influenced their DNA,” Brwn said. Cliff swallws were rare winners f cncrete and steel. Yet their success had cme at a cst — t the lng-winged swallws erased frm the ppulatin and t the birds’ altered genes themselves. They had been shaped by the rad.
    8. What is special abut cliff swallws?
    A. They flee steel and cncrete.B. They are gd at scial engineering.
    C. They take n clrs f the backgrund.D. They take advantage f human ftprint.

    10. What did cliff swallws’ success cst them?

    C. Dramatic declines in ppulatin.D. Remval f a genetic characteristic.
    11. The text is mst likely taken frm a bk abut ________.

Since 1992, peple have been talking abut “Dunbar’s number,” the suppsed upper limit f the number f peple with whm a persn can maintain stable scial relatinships. Named fr British scientist Rbin Dunbar, its value, runded frm 148 t 150, has permeated bth prfessinal and ppular culture.
The Swedish taxatin authrity keeps ffices under 150 peple as a result f it, and the standard facilities f the W. L. Gre and Assciates cmpany are based arund the cncept. Dunbar’s number was cited in the bestselling bk Tipping Pint, and it als has a fair amunt f academic influence.
Despite its fame, Dunbar’s number is prbably wrng, accrding t a new study.
Less well knwn than the value f Dunbar’s number is hw he came up with it. The value f 150 is determined by lking at the rati(比率) between the size f a certain part f the primate(灵长类动物) brain and the average size f grups they frm. These ratis were then applied t data n the human brain, and the average value f rughly 150 relatinships was determined.
In the new study, the researchers did similar calculatins but with updated infrmatin n the size f mnkey brains and scial netwrks. When the researchers applied Dunbar’s exact same methds t their new data, they gt a 95% cnfidence interval(置信区间) between rughly 5 and 292 peple. This is far t wide a range t be f any use.
Additinally, the researchers nted the fact that human brains ften wrk differently than thse f ur nearest cusins, as evidenced by ur ability t create things. The idea that we wuld prcess scial infrmatin exactly like ther primates d is a bld and largely unsupprted claim.
S, is there a new Dunbar number? Well, this isn’t the pint f this study. The researchers end their paper with: “It is ur hpe that this study will put an end t the use f ‘Dunbar’s number’ within science and in ppular media.”
    12. What des the underlined wrd “permeated” in paragraph 1 mean?
    A. Well preserved.B. Deeply affected.
    C. Depended heavily n.D. Take full advantage f.
    13. Hw des the authr clarify his pint in paragraph 2?
    A. By giving examples.B. By extending definitins.
    C. By drawing cmparisns.D. By making classificatins.
    14. Why did the researchers dismiss the idea f Dunbar’s number?
    A. The samples were t small t be f any use.
    B. Dunbar’s number has always been the subject f debate.
C The calculatin leading t Dunbar’s number is t cmplex.
    D. The rati frm primates culd nt be carried ver t humans.
    15. What might be the purpse f the new study?
    A. T replace Dunbar’s number.
    B. T ffer Dunbar’s number new evidence.
    C. T stp the spreading f Dunbar’s number.
    D. T find new applicatins f Dunbar’s number.

Father advised me t pick up a part-time jb in ur cmmunity, like teaching kids t swim r helping them with their subjects. “Yu’ll learn a lt,” he said. S, when Cmmunity Sprts asked fr vlunteers, I signed up fr data entry, which, I thught was helping t put data int a cmputer. Keybards, I knew. Caching? Impssible!
Realizing there must be smething wrng, I quickly called the head cach abut the misunderstanding. It did nt g well. He had been away frm hme and wuld nt be caching at all panicked, I called the ther assistant cach. He said, “It isn’t difficult t teach a bunch f first graders abut sccer. Be cnfident.”

If yu cannt cach, we will call yur team and let them knw they will nt be playing this seasn.” Seriusly, that was his slutin? I hang up the phne, saying I wuld call back t let him knw my chice.
