During my first year in cllege, I was silent. I was t afraid f saying smething wrng.
I declared a religin majr as a sphmre (二年级学生) and tk a class frm Barbara, a yung thelgian. My mind was split pen by a range f new thinkers and writers and by the quality f Barbara’s questins, I finally had smething t say and the energy t say it. I was a frequent visitr during Barbara’s ffice hurs, a rcket f wrds. She listened and calmly respnded, a perfect cntrast t my feverish ramblings (东拉西扯). I lved what she saw in me, which was a range f abilities I had never seen in myself. In the fllwing years, ur relatinship gradually deepened, but I was always cnscius f a teacher-student dynamic.
This changed fundamentally when I became a parent. I had my sn in March 2010, and Barbara was ne f the first t
cngratulate me. When, nine mnths later, my child was diagnsed with Tay-Sachs disease, a rare and always terminal
illness with n treatment and n cure, she sent me a letter-handwritten n a white legal pad. Fr the next tw and a half

existence.” I have never in my life read a mre deeply cmfrting sentence, ne that spke t my grandest hpes, my
deepest fears, and the nly faith that remains t me, which is a belief in chas. Our lve had blmed and deepened frm a
guarded mutual respect t a richer, deeper friendship.
Mentrs ( 导师) are meant t lead thse in their charge int fresh understanding and assist in the prject f making sense ut f the chas that is human life. Mentrs bserve and accmpany the darkest despair, the wildest srrw, and the
    mst unexpected jy.

Cnnecting with peers, prfessrs, and staff members is a fundamental part f having a gd cllege experience. But students dn’t always knw hw imprtant thse relatinships are— r hw t frm them. A new bk is here t help.
    Cnnectins Are Everything: A Cllege Student’s Guide t Relatinship-Rich Educatin is the fllw-up t
Relatinship-Rich Educatin: Hw Human Cnnectins Drive Success in Cllege. The first bk’s authrs, Peter Felten and
Le M. Lambert, have added tw mre fr the secnd: Isis Artze-Vega and Oscar R. Miranda Tapia.
While prfessinal in research ’ Cnnectins Are Everything is accessible. It’s a quick read, and its tne is friendly. Each chapter ends with a few reflectin questins and a few cncrete actins students can take t reach ut t ther peple n campus. The bk draws n a large bdy f student interviews, and it features stries frm a diverse grup f students attending all srts f clleges.
Felten pinted ut, many clleges d talk abut cnnecting during rientatin (入学教育), and many prfessrs d n the first day f class. “S it’s nt like institutins dn’t d anything abut this,” he said. But smetimes, Felten added, thse messages get lst, especially in the initial, busy adjustment t cllege. “A faculty (院系) member might say, ‘I’m available,
and I’m here t supprt yu, ’ and all this, but the student is still trying t figure ut hw the nline platfrm wrks, r
whatever it is. S smetimes we d a great deal f rienting, withut recgnizing that these are humans we’re dealing with,
    and they’re really verwhelmed.”
While the bk emphasizes many peple n campus can help students, it als makes clear that a cllege educatin isn’t
smething that happens t yu, but smething yu build. Fr abut a decade, Artze-Vega said, there’s been a lt f emphasis
n hw prfessrs can better supprt their students in the classrm. The bk, in cntrast, says “it’s a shared
respnsibility” . The bk encurages students “t use their agency and t take an active first step,” she said. That is
smething Artze-Vega thinks will appeal t prfessrs, wh, after all, are tired. When students are empwered t take
charge f their wn educatin, the authrs emphasized, nt everything falls t faculty members. And besides, students wh
are empwered are simply mre fun t teach.
    28. What makes Cnnectins Are Everything a practical bk?
    A. Its authrs ’ creativity. B. Its narrative writing style.
    C. Its authrs ’ academic backgrunds. D. Its varius student samples.
    29. What des Felten think f general university rientatin?
    A. Far-reaching. B. Ineffective. C. Persnalized. D. Advanced.
    30. What idea d the authrs favr as fr a rewarding cllege life?

    C. Interactin amng peers is f mre imprtance. D. Prfessrs ’ guidance is a must in and ut f classrm.
    31. Wh might find Cnnectins Are Everything useful?
    A. A researcher in cllege. B. A senir in high schl.
    C. A freshman in university. D. A teacher in kindergarten.
