    Althugh besity and diabetes (糖尿病) have been linked t an increased risk f COVID-19, as well as an increased risk f experiencing serius symptms nce infected, the impact f diet n these risks is unknwn. In a recent study led by researchers at Harvard-attached Massachusetts General Hspital (MGH), peple whse diets were based n healthy plant-based fds had lwer risks n bth cunts.
    “Previus reprts suggest that pr nutritin is a cmmn feature amng grups affected by the pandemic, but data n the assciatin between diet and COVID-19 risk and severity are lacking,” says lead authr Jrdi Merin, a researcher at MGH.
    Fr the study, Merin and his clleagues examined data n 592,571 participants f the smartphne-based COVID-19 Symptm Study. Participants lived in the U.K. and the U.S., and they were recruited (招募) frm March 24, 2020 and fllwed until Dec. 2, 2020. At the start f the study, participants cmpleted a questinnaire that asked abut their dietary habits befre the pandemic. Diet quality was assessed using a healthful Plant-Based Diet Scre that emphasizes healthy plant fds such as fruits and vegetables. During fllw-up, 31,831 participants develped COVID-19. Cmpared with individuals in the lwest quarter f the diet scre, thse in the highest quarter had a 9 percent lwer risk f develping COVID-19 and a 41 percent lwer risk f develping severe COVID-19.
    “Althugh we cannt emphasize enugh the imprtance f getting vaccinated (疫苗) and wearing a mask in crwded indr settings, ur study suggests that individuals can als ptentially reduce their risk f getting COVID-19 by paying attentin t their diet,” says c-senir authr Andrew Chan, a chief f the Clinical at MGH. The results als suggest that public health strategies that imprve access t healthy fds may help t reduce the burden f the COVID-19 pandemic. “Our findings are a call t gvernments and t priritize healthy diets and wellbeing with effective plicies, therwise we risk lsing decades f ecnmic prgress,” says Merin.
