Sometimes we experience pain that seems just too big to feel, too frightening to face--it looks like a tsunami. So, we run. My tsunami came when I was nine years old.

I was woken up by my mother’s screams— “Bob? Bob?! BOB!” I ran to my parents’ bedroom. My father was on all fours, unconscious. My mother was crazy-desperately trying to figure out how to stop what was happening. I ran to the phone-9-1-1, the neighbors, anyone— “Help us!” Soon rescue came, but my father didn’t come back to life.

When my friends came to comfort me. I remember “pulling myself together” as I walked toward them, determining to show them that I was fine.

The more I denied my pain, the more I was praised by the adults around me— “Oh, look how strong she is!” So, I kept saying “I’m fine.” Over and over and over. I said it enough-performed it enough-I even fooled myself. I believed that I was okay.

But pain doesn’t just “go away”-that whole “time heals” thing is a total crock. 30 years after my father died, when I looked around for an explanation for all the years of destructive behavior, I couldn’t find the root of the pain in my life because I had covered it up so well. All the “I’m fine” -30 years of them-buried the pain of that nine years old girl.

Her pain had been trying to come out.to be heard, to be healed, my entire life.

    And, finally, it was.

After years of treatment, I found my way back to that night where the pain started, back to the tsunami. This time, I didn’t run. It hurts-it still hurts-but now, when it hurts. I let the pain come. I’m not scared to say, “I’m not fine”-because I know, eventually, I will be.

    A. She ran out to look for rescue.  B. She kept calm and asked for help.

    C. She offered first aid to him at once. D. She was too afraid to do anything.

    26. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “crock” in Paragraph 5?

    A. Fact.  B. Theory.  C. Experiment.  D. Lie.

    27. Why was the author praised?

    A. She behaved politely.   B. She seemed to be confident.

    C. She could look after herself.  D. She could handle the blow properly.

    28. What lesson can we get from the author’s experience?

    A. Hiding our pain can be harmful.

    B. Expressing pain is not very easy.

    C. Being strong means hiding one’s pain.

    D. Children are good at covering up their pain.

    C

The Antarctic’s snow-white environment is going green and facing other unexpected threats.

Scientists say that as temperatures go up in the polar areas, invading(侵袭)plants and insects, including the flies, cause a major threat.

More and more of these invaders, in the form of larvae(幼虫)or seeds, are surviving in coastal areas around the South Pole, where the temperature has risen by almost 3 over the past five decades. Glaciers have melted, exposing more land which has been occupied by mosses that have been found to be growing more quickly and thickly than ever before—providing potential green homes for invaders.

“The common houseflies are a perfect example of the problem the Antarctic now faces from invading species,” said Dominic Hodgson of the British Antarctic Survey. “They arrive by ship, where they exist in kitchens. They now have an increasing chance of surviving in the Antarctic as it warms up, and that is a worry. Insects like the houseflies carry bacteria that could have a deadly effect on native life forms.”

The Antarctic has several native species of insects. Together with its native mosses, these are now under increased threat from three major sources: visiting scientists, increasing number of tourists and global warming. However, it is global warming that is the main driver of the “greening” of the Antarctic.

In the 2015-2016 travel season, more than 38,000 tourists visited the Antarctic. “These tourists are often very careful about not leaving waste. But they could carry seeds or larvae on their boots when they set foot on the Antarctic,” said Dominic.

More and more invading insects and plants have been found on the Antarctic and have required removal. “The insects and plants that are native to the Antarctic have survived there for thousands of years,” said Dominic. “We have to act now if we want to save the environment.”

    A. Houseflies.   B. Coastal areas.

    C. A kind of plants.   D. A kind of animals.

    B. They will die out because of the freezing weather.

    C. They come to the Antarctic from nearby islands on their own.

    D. They could severely influence the native species of the Antarctic.

    31. What is the main cause of the Antarctic going green?

    A. The arrival of scientists.

    B. The increasing number of visitors.

    C. The rapid spread of native plants.

    D. The rising temperature around the world.

    32. What’s the best title for the text?

    A. The Antarctic Is Becoming Green and Energetic

    B. Various Threats Are Putting the Antarctic at Risk

Growing up, I had always been told that girls only take the money from their parents but never look back to taking care of them. I always wondered if it was true.

I got married at the very early age of 22. I had always been a quiet girl, but with a loving heart I wanted to have a huge family. I found a husband but as we grew older things changed. I have been judged, accused, and blamed over and over again to the point where I was broken down emotionally. I was not able to make anyone understand what I felt. I would just keep on smiling and just focused on taking care of what was necessary, which was my family. Whenever I needed a friend to talk to, I felt judged to the point where I felt that opening my mouth was wrong. I lost my self-confidence, my belief, my faith, and my trust.

One thing I never gave up on was reading, because I have learned that to cut down the negative in life I had to keep adding positive things in my life. Sometimes reading did not help me right away but I knew it was working internally. The Secret Book is one of my favorite books that I have on my phone and next to my pillow. I am a firm believer in the saying, “There is light at the end of the tunnel.” No one knows how long the tunnel is, but yes, there is always light at the end of it. My tunnel was filled with judgments, accusations, and blaming. I have not overcome it completely yet but I know that I will overcome all of it soon to become the best version of myself.

One of the biggest lessons I have learned is to never judge anyone without knowing the real story. I have also learned to always encourage and pour positive things into people to build them up.

    33. Why did the author feel bothered?

    A. She had no friend due to her character.

    B. She couldn’t make herself understood.

    C. She had to support her family by herself.

    D. She broke up the marriage with her husband.

    34. Which of the following words can best describe the author?

    A. Quiet but strong.   B. Kind and energetic.

    C. Smart and hard-working.  D. Lazy but knowledgeable.

    35. What has the author learned from these experiences?

    A. Don’t judge a person from his appearance.

    B. Always do positive things and never give in.

    C. Whatever is worth doing is worth doing well.

    D. A house without books is like a room without windows.

Lionel, Fandi and Iskandar often got together to play football. They dreamt of one day growing up to be professional footballers. The empty field beside the block of neighbourhood was where they would meet for their football sessions.

One sunny afternoon, they were at the field as usual. They were in the thick of their game when Fandi aimed his foot at the ball and gave a heavy kick. He himself was surprised by his strength. The ball flew past the goalposts(门柱)breaking into a glass window of the house behind. The boys were too shocked for words. They were half expecting the annoyed home owner, Madam Leong, to storm out through the front door and give them a good tongue criticizing. They knew she was an ill-tempered old lady. Actually, she had scolded(责骂)them several times before for being too noisy.

When no one came out of the house after ten minutes, the boys were quite surprised. They had prepared themselves for a scolding and were ready to apologise to Madam Leong for breaking her window. Out of curiosity, Fandi adventured into Madam Leong’s yard. The gate was unlocked and he went in while the other two waited outside. Fandi knocked on the main door. No reply. Looking in through the broken window, Fandi let out a loud scream. Lying on the floor in a pool of blood was the old lady. There was a big cut on her forehead. She must have been cut by pieces of glass, flying across the living room.

In panic, Fandi immediately dialled ‘911’ for an ambulance. As they were unable to enter the house without a key, there was nothing they could do but wait for the ambulance to arrive. Although the ambulance arrived soon, to the boys, the annoying wait seemed like forever. The ambulance attendants forced open the door and rushed to Madam Leong. She was unconscious(昏迷), but still breathing. One of the ambulance attendants applied pressure on the wound and wrapped it. With its emergency lights flashing, the ambulance rushed off to the nearest hospital.
