    It is the first time that data n air pllutin and the lifen has been studied tgether in rder t check hw air pllutin affects verall life expectancy.
    The researchers lked at utdr air pllutin frm particulate matter (PM)(颗粒物) smaller than 2.5 micrns. These particulates can enter deep int the lungs, and breathing PM 2.5 is assciated with the increased risk f heart attacks, strkes and cancers. PM 2.5 pllutin cmes frm pwer plants, cars and trucks, fires, agriculture and industrial emissins(排放物).
    Led by Jshua Apte, the team used data frm the Glbal Burden f Disease Study t measure PM 2.5 air pllutin expsure and its cnsequences in 185 cuntries. They then quantified the natinal impact n life expectancy fr each individual cuntry as well as n a glbal scale.
    “The fact that air pllutin is a majr glbal killer is already well­knwn,” said Apte. “And we all care abut hw lng we can live. Here, we were able t systematically identify hw air pllutin shrtens lives arund the wrld. What we fund is that air pllutin has a very large effect n survival — n average abut a year glbally.”
    In the cntext f ther significant phenmena negatively affecting human survival rates, Apte said this is a big number. “Fr example, it’s cnsiderably larger than the benefit in survival we might see if we fund cures fr bth lung and breast cancer cmbined,” he said. “In cuntries like India and China, the benefit fr elderly peple f imprving air quality wuld be especially large.
