We all knw that unpleasant feeling when we’re talking abut smething interesting and halfway thrugh ur sentence we’re interrupted (打断). But was that really an interruptin? The answer depends n whm yu ask, accrding t new research led by Katherine Hiltn frm Stanfrd University.
Using a set f cntrlled audi clips, Hiltn surveyed 5,000 American English speakers t better understand what affects peple’s understandings f interruptins. She had participants listen t audi clips and then answer questins abut whether the speakers seemed t be friendly and engaged, listening t ne anther, r trying t interrupt.
Hiltn fund that American English speakers have different cnversatinal styles. She identified tw grups: high and lw intensity speakers. High intensity speakers are generally uncmfrtable with mments f silence in cnversatin and cnsider talking at the same time a sign f engagement. Lw intensity speakers find it rude t talk at the same time and prefer peple speak ne after anther in cnversatin.
The differences in cnversatinal styles became bvius when participants listened t audi clips in which tw peple spke at the same time but were agreeing with each ther and stayed n tpic, Hiltn said. The high intensity grup reprted that cnversatins where peple spke at the same time when expressing agreement were nt interruptive but engaged and friendlier than the cnversatins with mments f silence in between speaking turns. By cmparisn, the lw intensity grup regards any amunt f simultaneus (同时) chat as a rude interruptin, regardless f what the speakers were saying.
“Peple care abut being interrupted, and thse small interruptins can have a massive effect n the verall cmmunicatin,” Hiltn said. “Breaking apart what an interruptin means is essential if we want t understand hw humans interact with each ther.”
    28. What des Hiltn’s research fcus n?
    A. Whether interruptin is gd r nt B. What interruptins mean t peple.
    C. Hw t avid getting interrupted.D. Why speakers interrupt each ther.
    29. What d participants f the study need t d?
    A. Recrd an audi clip.B. Answer sme questins.
    C. Listen t ne anther.D. Have a chat with a friend.
    30. What d lw intensity speakers think f simultaneus chat?
    A. It’s imprtant.B. It’s interesting
    C. It’s inefficient.D. It’s implite.
    31. What can we learn frm Hiltn’s research?
    A. Cnversatinal styles affect the understandings f interruptins.
    B. Cmmunicatin is the very basis f ur everyday life.
    C. Interruptins during cnversatins cntribute t thinking.
    D. Language barriers will always exist regardless f the cntent.

The masked shrew is ne f the smallest mammals(哺乳动物) in Nrth America, nly a few inches lng. Hwever, it recently made a giant jump. Over the past few decades, the tiny shrew has mved mre than 4,000 feet n bth sides f the Rcky Muntains. And it’s nt the nly ne.
Studies in ther parts f the wrld have suggested that muntain animals are climbing higher. Lead study authr Christy McCain, an eclgist at the University f Clrad Bulder, and her c-authrs Sarah King and Tim Szewezyk wanted t shw it is true in the Rckies.
The new study lked at 47 different species f small mammals in the Clrad Rcky Muntains. First, the researchers studied the small mammal samples (样本) cllected in Clrad ver the last few decades and built a database n where these mammals were typically fund and hw high up. Next, they cnducted a series f field surveys in the Clrad Rckies, cunting small mammals and recrding where each species is fund tday. They then calculated hw much each mammal ppulatin has mved ver the last few decades.
They fund that 26 f the 47 species studied had mved upward ver time. Masked shrews were amng the species with the largest jumps, climbing a ttal f abut 4,500 feet. McCain nted that species with the largest upward jumps tend t share sme imprtant characteristics. Mst f them are animals specifically adapted t cld weather. 11 f the 47 mammal species actually mved dwnward. McCain nted they may be less sensitive t muntain warming. Six species d nt appear t have changed at all. And fur species have cmpletely disappeared frm the muntains in the perid between the 1980s and nw.
“This is the first indicatin,” McCain said, “that large animal cmmunities are respnding t climate change.” The findings agree with the cnclusins f ther studies arund the wrld — that muntain ecsystems are sensitive t climate change and wildlife in these places is already respnding t the pressure, bth f which can urge humans t change the current situatin.
    32. Why did Christy McCain and her team d the study?
    A. T cllect data f muntain animals.B. T urge humans t change the situatin.
    C. T prve the ever-knwn cnclusins.D. T assess the effects f climate change.
    33. What des the study find abut muntain mammals?
    A. Many species have disappeared.B. Nne have mved dwnward.
    C. Thse ging higher are sensitive t cld.D. Many are affected by climate change.
    34. What can the findings functin as?
    A. A wake-up call.B. A climate reminder.
    C. A pressure respnse.D. A situatin changer.
    35. What’s the main theme f the text?
    A. Cld-adapted species suffer a lt in the Rckies.
    B. Muntain mammals climb higher t beat the heat.
    C. Climate change is making the Rckies unlivable.
    D. Small mammals are vital t muntain ecsystems.
