    Films to watch this year
    Lightyear
Buzz Lightyear has been central to four Toy Story feature films, his own TV series, and various cartoon shorts. This year, the square-jawed Space Ranger is getting a film of his own. Director Angus MacLane ( co-director of Finding Dory ) and screenwriter Pete Docter ( Soul, Up, Inside Out ) bring back a beloved character while giving his interstellar story a new look, a more serious tone, and a fresh voice:
Chris Evans rather than Tim Allen is the actor who’ll be shouting,“To infinity - and beyond!” Released internationally on 17 June
    Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ( Part One )
It’s unlikely that the sequel will be quite as creative, but, as the sub-title suggests, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ( Part One ) is the first episode in a two-part story, which makes it a rarity in the world of cartoon films.
    Released internationally on 7 October
    Avatar 2
There are two things we know about James Cameron: he can’ t be rushed, and he loves the ocean. Those qualities come together in Avatar 2. The new film returns to the planet of Pandora, where blue- skinned Neytiri ( Zeo Saldana ) and her human husband Jake ( Sam Worthington ) are now patents, and Earthlings still haven’t solved the climate crisis. Most of the action took place underwater and was shot in a 900,000-gallon tank.
    Released internationally on 16 December
    Top Gun: Maverick
It was back in 1986 that Tom Cruise last played Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a trainee fighter pilot in the US Navy. Can anyone really believe that, all these years later, Maverick would only be a captain while his old frenemy “Iceman” ( Val Kilmer ) would be a four-star general?
    Released internationally on 17 May
    1. Who is Not involved in the production of Lightyear?
    A. Angus MacLane. B. Pete Docter. C. Chris Evans. D. Tim Allen.
    2. If you are interested in the films James Cameron directs, which will you view?
    A. Lightyear. B. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One).
    C. Avatar 2. D. Top Gun: Maverick.
    3. What can we learn about Top Gun: Maverick?
    A. It is a film based on military theme.
    B. It is created by Tom Cruise.
    C. It is the last one to be released.
    D. It is a cartoon film made up of two episodes.

Can anyone really believe that, all these years later, Maverick would only be a captain while his old frenemy “Iceman” ( Val Kilmer ) would be a four-star general? 故选A。

My wife, Hannah, and I don’t usually keep houseplants. Anything in pots gets either over-watered or under-watered. But after my diagnosis with glioblastoma, a terminal brain cancer, with no more than a year to live, I loved the idea of having something new and green around.
My friend Mitch gave me what he said was a lucky bamboo plant in a deep-green pottery bowl with three pencil-sized stalks (茎;杆) tied together. We placed the plant in the living room window across from the couch where I spent much of the day. I smiled when I looked at it over the rim of the mug of coffee Hannah brought me each morning.
I told Hannah I wanted to care for the plant myself. Tending to the plant gave me a sense of accomplishment at a time when I sometimes felt useless. Glioblastoma limited my ability to walk, and the treatment left me exhausted, making it hard for me to accomplish everyday tasks. As a family physician, I was used to being the one who provided care, not the one who received it. Since my diagnosis, I had to rely on help from other people. The enormous change left me feeling purposeless and unsettled. Watering the plant, as small an act as it was, connected me to a core part of my old identity and taught me that plants and people could still depend on me.
Over the next few months, I recovered from surgery and completed radiation and chemotherapy. Even after I returned to work, I continued to care for the plant. Soon, it had nearly doubled in height and its leaves were shiny and lush. Both the tree and I were thriving
    4. Why did the writer keep the plant?
    A. His misfortune in life. B. His work experience.
    C. Hannah’s insistence. D. Mitch’s suggestion.
    5. According to paragraph 3, why did the writer no longer feel he was useless?
    A. He continued his career. B. He overcame his disease.
    C. He could still be a caregiver. D. He developed a love for planting.
6 Which of the following best describes the writer?
    A. Aimless but open-minded. B. Accomplished and determined.
    C. Worried but understanding. D. Caring and optimistic.
    7. What’s the best title for the passage?
    A. A Miracle Cure. B. A Determined Doctor.
    C. An Incurable Disease. D. A Healing Bamboo.
A 5. C 6. D 7. D

根据第一段中“But after my diagnosis with glioblastoma, a terminal brain cancer, with no more than a year to live, I loved the idea of having something new and green around.(但在我被诊断出患有胶质母细胞瘤(一种晚期脑癌),生命只剩下不到一年的时候,我喜欢周围有一些新鲜绿色的东西的想法)”可知,作者被确诊患有癌症后,想要开始养一些室内植物,即生活中的不幸让作者保留这株植物。故选A。
根据第三段中“Tending to the plant gave me a sense of accomplishment at a time when I sometimes felt useless.(照顾这株植物在我有时觉得自己很没用时给了我一种成就感)”和“Watering the plant, as small an act as it was, connected me to a core part of my old identity and taught me that plants and people could still depend on me.(给植物浇水,尽管是一件小事,却把我和我旧身份的一个核心部分联系起来,并告诉我,植物和人们仍然可以依赖我)”可知,通过照料植物,作者不再觉得自己很没用,因为作者通过给植物浇水这样的小事找到了成就感,意识到自己仍然可以照顾别人。
根据第三段中“As a family physician, I was used to being the one who provided care, not the one who received it.(作为一名家庭医生,我习惯于成为提供护理的人,而不是接受护理的人)”,第三段中“Watering the plant, as small an act as it was, connected me to a core part of my old identity and taught me that plants and people could still depend on me.(给植物浇水,尽管是一件小事,却把我和我旧身份的一个核心部分联系起来,并告诉我,植物和人们仍然可以依赖我)”,最后一段中“Over the next few months, I recovered from surgery and completed radiation and chemotherapy.(在接下来的几个月里,我从手术中恢复过来,并完成了放疗和化疗)”和最后一段中“Both the tree and I were thriving (茁壮成长).(这棵树和我都茁壮成长)”可知,作者习惯于照顾别人,从给植物浇水这样的小事中寻找意义,战胜病魔,故作者体贴且乐观,故选D。
根据全文内容,结合最后一段中“Over the next few months, I recovered from surgery and completed radiation and chemotherapy. Even after I returned to work, I continued to care for the plant. Soon, it had nearly doubled in height and its leaves were shiny and lush. Both the tree and I were thriving
    C
According to a report by South China Morning Post, China is planning to launch a hyperloop (超级高铁), also known as a super-high speed pipeline maglev system by 2035. If the project goes as planned, the new train will be the world’s fastest ground-based transport technology.
Chinese authorities have announced the approval of the country’s first hyperloop line. Its length will be 175 kilometers, and it will pass between the cities of Shanghai and Hangzhou. These are two key metropolitan areas for the country’s economy, known for their large populations.
The distance between these two cities can now be covered in about three hours by car or an hour by high-speed train. However, the hyperloop can reach speeds of up to 1000 km/h, which means that the route can be completed in just 15 minutes. That’s 2 times faster than commercial passenger planes and 10 times than traditional high-speed trains.
The proposed project will make China one of the pioneers in hyperloop technology, allowing faster travel between several major cities. The hyperloop provides a high-security level with low energy consumption. It reduces noise and pollution levels while still being faster than commercial flights and the fastest current bullet train. The technology will further advance China’s position as a leader in transport.
A super-fast hyperloop train in China has completed its first test runs. These consisted of three test runs at a superconducting maglev test line in Datong, Shanxi province that reached the speed of 50 km/h. However, the current tube available for trials measures only 2 km in length. It is expected to be extended to 60 km over the next few years.
    8. What is the project about?
    A. Building the world’s longest rail line.
    B. Enlarging the passenger capacity of the train.
    C. Constructing the first hyperloop line in China.
    D. Expanding the coverage of the railway system.
    9. What are the figures in paragraph 3 intended for?
    A. To prove the high speed of the hyperloop.
    B. To stress the convenience of traveling by railway.
    C. To state the necessity of developing high-speed trains.
    D. To show China ‘s great efforts to improve transport technology.
    10. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about the project?
    A. Its main purposes.
    B. Its potential value.
    C. Its specific tasks.
    D. Its environmental benefits.
    11. What is the next step of the project?
    A. Extending the railway line for trials.
    B. Increasing the length of the hyperloop trains.
    C. Conducting the train’s first test runs in Datong.
    D. Reducing noise and pollution levels of the train.
C 9. A 10. B 11. A

根据第一段“According to a report by South China Morning Post, China is planning to launch a hyperloop(超级高铁 ), also known as a super-high speed pipeline maglev system by 2035. ”(据《南华早报》报道,中国计划在2035年之前启动超级高铁,也被称为超高速管道磁悬浮系统。)可知,该项目是在中国建设第一条超级高铁。故选C。
    【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“The distance between these two cities can now be covered in about three hours by car or an hour by high-speed train. However, the hyperloop can reach speeds of up to 1000 km/h, which means that the route can be completed in just 15 minutes. That’s 2 times faster than commercial passenger planes and 10 times than traditional high-speed trains.”(这两个城市之间的距离现在可以用大约3小时的汽车或1小时的高铁来完成;然而,超级高铁的速度可以达到1000公里/小时,这意味着这条线路可以在15分钟内完成,这比商用客机快2倍,比传统高速列车快10倍。) 故选A。
根据第四段“The proposed project will make China one of the pioneers in hyperloop technology, allowing faster travel between several major cities. The hyperloop provides a high-security level with low energy consumption. It reduces noise and pollution levels while still being faster than commercial flights and the fastest current bullet train. 【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“However, the current tube available for trials measures only 2 km in length. It is expected to be extended to 60 km over the next few years.”(然而,目前可供试验的轨道长度只有2公里,预计在未来几年内将延长至60公里。) 故选A。
    D
Many people prefer eating out instead of cooking at home. A change appears to be taking place, though, and millennials (千禧一代) are leading the way. According to one survey, more young people are starting to cook at home for three basic reasons: They can save money, eat healthily and waste less food.
Popular TV chefs are also getting millennials excited about learning some basic cooking skills. Many millennials view cooking as a form of entertainment and self-expression. They proudly post pictures of their culinary (烹饪的) creations on Facebook or Instagram, and invite friends over to share the cooking experience.
Many millennials have also found ways to avoid wasting food. After roasting a chicken, they put the leftover bones in their freezer instead of the garbage can. Later, they use the bones to make chicken stock (鸡汤), which is an important ingredient in many dishes.
They also hate throwing out fruit that’s too old. To avoid that situation, they bake ripe fruit like berries and bananas for 15 minutes at 175 degrees C. Then they freeze it overnight. After that, they place the fruit in plastic bags and store it in their freezer for later use.
Many millennials only eat at restaurants that have excellent food-waste policies. These restaurants use every part of the vegetables they buy, including their stems and roots, in dishes. They also use beef, chicken and pork bones to make their own stock.
Millennials also reduce food waste by only buying what they require. Before going to a supermarket, they write down what they need and don’t buy anything else. That way they won’t purchase more food than they can consume.
    12. What is this passage mainly concerned with?
    A. A cooking trend that has attracted millennials.
    B. A plan that TV chefs have for donating food.
    C. A novel cooking technique that millennials like.
    D. A food production system that is favored by millennials.
    13. How do many millennials deal with the leftover bones from chicken?
    A. They give the bones to other people who need them.
    B. They bake the bones for 15 minutes at 175 degrees
    C. They freeze the bones for cooking chicken stock later.
    D. They store the bones in the freezer and throw them away.
    14. What does the underlined “stock” refer to in Paragraph 5?
    A. Money. B. Soup. C. Milk. D. Noodle.
    15. In which part of a magazine can you find this article?
    A. Life style. B. Traveling tips.
    C. Fashion shows. D. Advanced technology.
A 13. C 14. B 15. A
根据第一段“A change appears to be taking place, though, and millennials (千禧一代) are leading the way. ccording to one survey, more young people are starting to cook at home for three basic reasons: They can save money, eat healthily and waste less food.”(然而,一种变化似乎正在发生,而千禧一代正在引领这一潮流,根据一项调查,越来越多的年轻人开始在家做饭有三个基本原因:他们可以省钱,吃得健康,减少食物浪费。) 故选A。
根据第三段“After roasting a chicken, they put the leftover bones in their freezer instead of the garbage can. Later, they use the bones to make chicken stock (鸡汤), which is an important ingredient in many dishes.”(烤鸡后,他们把剩下的骨头放进冰箱而不是垃圾桶,之后,他们用骨头做鸡汤,这是许多菜肴的重要材料。)
根据第三段“Later, they use the bones to make chicken stock (鸡汤), which is an important ingredient in many dishes.”(之后,他们用骨头做鸡汤,这是许多菜肴的重要材料。)可知,千禧一代会用烤鸡剩下的鸡骨头来做鸡汤;结合第五段划线词所在句“They also use beef, chicken and pork bones to make their own stock.”
根据第一段“Many people prefer eating out instead of cooking at home. A change appears to be taking place, though, and millennials (千禧一代) are leading the way. ”(许多人宁愿在外面吃饭而不愿在家做饭。然而,一种变化似乎正在发生,而千禧一代正在引领这一潮流。)及全文内容可知,本文主要讲述了以千禧一代为代表的年轻人正在开始一种做饭潮流,他们的生活方式开始发生改变,故本文应该选自杂志的“生活方式”部分。故选A。

I still remember how nervous I felt doing some things for the first time. You’d think that after a lot of first times the butterflies-in-stomach feeling would disappear. But here’s what happened a month ago.
“Please come to the chess club tomorrow,” Mareya said to me. “I know you’re going to love it!” “I’ve never even played chess(国际象棋),” I said. “It seems super hard.”
“I went last week, and it was extremely fun!” said Mareya. “Really?” I said, not convinced.
“Really. Also, the club needs more people to keep it going.” Mareya smiled.
“Listen. If you try it, I’ll do my silly rabbit dance in the middle of recess (课间休息).” I laughed. “In front of everyone? It’s a deal!”
When I arrived at home. I searched our game shelves. Finally, at the very bottom of the pile, I found a tattered (破旧的) box with a chessboard and plastic chess pieces. I read the instructions carefully. Knights, rooks, bishops, pawns, a king, and a queen — each piece had a special starting place and its own way of moving. My heart sank. I couldn’t possibly memorize all the rules in time. Everyone in the chess club was going to think I was inexperienced!
That night, I dreamed I was in a chess game, and the queens, kings, and knights were laughing at me. Even the knights’ horses were snickering (窃笑)! The next day, I told Mareya I was having second thoughts.
“Please don’t back out,” she said. “Remember our deal.”
“I would like to see your silly rabbit dance,” I said, smiling.
After school, I found the chess club’s meeting room and went inside. I looked around, but Mareya was nowhere in sight! To make matters worse, I didn’t know a single person in the room. Butterflies filled my stomach as I started to head toward the door.
    “Hi!” said a friendly woman. “I’m Ms.Martinez.”
“I’m Arizona,” I said. “ I was supposed to meet a friend, but I don’t see her. I’d better get going.” “Well, as long as you ‘re here, why don’t you sit with Joe and Jess and watch their game?”
    注意:
    1. 续写短文的词数应为 150 左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

I didn’t want to be rude, so I sat down.

    Paragraph 2:
The next day, at recess, Mareya ran up to me.
    ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I didn’t want to be rude, so I sat down. “I’ll just stay for a minute.” I thought. To my surprise, I stayed there for an hour and I actually had fun. Watching Joe and Jess playing fiercely on the chessboard, I was very excited and eager to have a try. All the worries and fear disappeared at that moment. I tried my best to control my eagerness and turned to ask Ms.Martinez in a whisper, “May I join the chess club to learn to play chess, Ms. Martinez? It’s really an amazing game, which I think I’ve fallen in love with.” “Of course, welcome you, Arizona!” Ms. Martinez smiled and offered her hand to me warmly.
The next day, at recess, Mareya ran up to me. “Oh, Arizona, I heard that you joined the chess club yesterday and you are the member now.” Upon seeing me, she shouted at me cheerfully. “Yeah, can I have the honour to enjoy your silly rabbit dance now?” Mareya seemed to hesitate for a moment and answered, “No problem! It’s a deal.” Then we laughed together. From then on, I was no longer afraid of being laughed at because I knew as long as I kept moving forward, the scared feeling would go away.
