They initially set ff in the summer f 2019, armed with a cmputer-designed rute which they had fllwed t avid cycling thrugh Paris’Charles de Gaulle Airprt. Hwever, they were frced t stp after Ms Saraghi sustained a knee injury.
The Angl-Italian cuple tried again that winter, befre giving up because it was t cld t camp. The Cvid-19 pandemic then delayed the trip’s cmpletin by anther tw years. “We had s many bstacles. When we started this time we were thinking—what can g wrng this time? We felt we had let peple dwn by nt cmpleting it, and ur life felt kind f stuck. S we’re very happy,” Ms Saraghi said.
The pair said they want peple wh see the GPS image t cnsider cycling shrter jurneys rather than chsing t drive. “Cycling is cheaper, it’s healthy, it’s fun, and it’s ften pretty fast. Please give it a secnd and cnsider if there is an alternative t the car- there may nt be, but ften there is,” Mr Smith tld The Independent. Scientists have invented a new type f battery that makes it pssible t charge electric vehicles in less than 10 minutes. The innvative design fr lithiumin (锂离子) batteries invlves a recrd-breaking cmbinatin f shrter charge time and mre energy acquired fr lnger travel range, accrding t the Penn State University researchers wh came up with it.
“The need fr smaller, faster-charging batteries is greater than ever,” said Prfessr Chayang Wang frm Penn State University, wh led the research. “There are simply nt enugh batteries and critical raw materials, especially thse prduced dmestically, t meet expected demand.”
The fast-charging technlgy makes it pssible fr electric vehicles t dwnsize frm 150 t 50 kWh withut shrtening range, making them cheaper and mre efficient. “The smaller, faster-charging batteries will dramatically cut dwn battery cst and usage f critical raw materials, such as cbalt, graphite and lithium, enabling mass adptin f affrdable electric cars,” said Prfessr Wang.
The breakthrugh centres n a nvel methd fr cntrlling the temperature f the battery, which is needed t ptimise its charge time and perfrmance. Until nw, this has invlved external heating and cling systems that are inefficient and waste energy.
Regular batteries have three cmpnents—an ande, an electrlyte and a cathde—but the fast-charging system adds a furth that builds in the temperature cntrl system. An ultrathin layer f nickel (超薄镍层) acts as a stimulus t cntrl the battery’s temperature, allwing fr 10-minute fast charging fr electric cars.
“True fast-charging batteries wuld have immediate impact,” the researchers nted, “Since there are nt enugh raw materials fr every internal cmbustin (燃烧) engine car t be replaced by a 150 kWh-equipped EV, fast charging is vital fr EVs t g mainstream and becme accessible t the public.”
    8. What is the main feature f the innvative battery?
    A. Lnger travel range.B. Wider recyclable use.
    C. Shrtened charge time.D. Mre energy cnsumed.
    9. What des “this” refer t in paragraph 4?
    A. The battery’s charge timeB. The breakthrugh in batteries.
    C. The battery’s perfrmanceD. The methd f temperature cntrl.
    10. Why des the authr mentin regular battery in paragraph 5?
    A. T explain a reasn.B. T give instructins.
    C. T make cmparisn.D. T highlight an pinin.
    11. What d the researchers’ wrds imply in the last paragraph?
    A. Electric vehicles depend greatly n raw materials.
    B. The fast-charging batteries have a prmising future.
    C. The 150 kWh-equipped EVs are bund t g mainstream.
    D. Internal cmbustin engine cars will eventually be replaced.

Drnes (无人机) equipped with hyperspectral and thermal sensrs will be applied in Italy t spt trees infected with Xylella fastidisa, a deadly bacterium that has been destrying the cuntry’s live crps fr almst a decade.
The sensrs will be able t detect signs f early infectin that cannt be nticed easily, such as slight changes in the clr f leaves, allwing farmers t select affected trees and prevent utbreaks. Mre than 300,000 trees will be examined using the new drne technlgy in the next few mnths.
“This technlgy has the ptential t give the Italian gvernment a majr advantage in the fight against Xylella,” says Manuela, a researcher f the prject. “We tend t realize far t late if a plant is infected - these drne sensrs will allw us t spt and prevent utbreaks rather than just react t them.”
Early detectin strategies like this are key fr cntrlling Xylella, which is spread by spittlebugs that feed n infected plants, taking in bacteria and passing them t healthy plants nearby. Once the bacteria have infected a plant, they blck the xylem vessels that transprt water thrugh the plant, cutting ff its ability t absrb water and, eventually, killing it.
“Xylella is particularly dangerus because it has many different natural hsts thrugh which it can spread.” says Andrea Mairan, a plant health expert at the Eurpean Fd Safety Authrity in can spread,” says Andrea Mairan, a plant health expert at the Eurpean Fd Safety Authrity in Italy. “There are hundreds f different plant species that can hst it.”
Accrding t the law, as sn as a tree is fund t be infected with Xylella, it must immediately be cut dwn - alng with all species easily affected within a 50-metre radius (半径). A 2.5-kilmetre zne arund the infected plant is then clsely mnitred t prevent spread t surrunding trees. The remte-detectin drnes will ensure that any infected tree in these areas is diagnsed and recgnized quicker than ever befre.
The hpe is that this cntainment strategy in infected regins can buy time fr the rest f the cuntry’s live plantatins until a cure can be fund.
    12. What is the prblem with the live crps in Italy?
    A. Bacteria infectin.B. Lack f water.
    C. Sil pllutin.D. Backward technlgy.
    13. Hw d drnes help the farmers?
    A. By curing the affected trees.B. By changing the clr f leaves.
    C. By mnitring the quality f trees.D. By discvering the unnticed infectin.
    14. What is paragraph 4 mainly abut?
    A. The danger f Xylella.B. The key f the strategies.
    C. The cause f the bacteria.D. The feature f the drnes.
    15. What can we expect f the drnes in the future?
    A. They will prevent trees frm being infected.
    B. They will ensure the recgnitin f the plants.
    C. They can speed up the diagnsis f diseased trees.
    D. They might help increase cuntry’s live plantatins.
