    Text 10
Well,I manage a small branch of a large supermarket, and we lose a lot of money through shoplifting.I have to try to prevent it,or else I’ll lose all my profits.A lot of shopliftings are done by teenagers in groups. They do it for fun. They’re not frightened so we have to make it difficult for them.Obviously a supermarket can’t have chains or alarms on the goods. So we have store detectives, who walk around the shop like ordinary shoppers, otherwise they’ll be recognized. We have big signs up,saying,“Shoplifters will be punished”,but that doesn’t help much. We’ve started putting cash desks at all the exits to prevent the shoplifters walking straight out with things.Of course, that worries the ordinary shopper who hasn’t found what he wanted. We also use closed-circuit television, but that’s expensive. In fact, all good methods of prevention are quite expensive, and naturally, they make our prices more expensive. But it has to be done.otherwise shoplifting itself will make all the prices much higher, and the public doesn’t want that!

[2023·江苏省高三上学期期中调研]I started playing the piano when I was around four years old—that was 15 years ago!—and since then, the longest I haven't touched piano keys was probably two months. This was an enormous amount of devotion to something that I wasn't even planning to make money off of it—so there must have been something worth holding on to, right?
The easy guess is that I was always so purely in love with music and piano that I couldn't bear to let them go. However, it's a bit more complicated than that. I struggled a lot with piano. I felt pressure to improve, innovate, and be the best in order to prove something to others. The seed of my musical interest was grown with competition and doubt.
It's difficult to learn to love something that you didn't choose in the first place. But somehow, sometime, love grew. And by high school, it was strong enough that I found the strength to hold on tighter, dig further, and find something of my own to grow. In a way, I had to start over.
And so, I took a pause. I switched teachers, and got incredibly lucky with one who encouraged me and helped me tunnel into what I loved, not what I was told I should learn. Anything I had was good enough to be loved.
This summer, I started learning the guitar. I deliberately wanted to learn on my own—this was just for me, to form a new relationship to music. Even though my guitar skills are miles lower than my piano skills, I feel I can express myself even more wholly through strings than keys. There's just something about doing it all for myself that has helped me heal the damages to my relationship to music.
The love and hate I've had for the piano were both planted and grown. If you too have learned to hate something you once loved—or something you never chose—remember that with dedication, it can be uprooted, and love can make a home in its place. There is always time. There is always room.
1.What can we learn about the author's experience from Paragraph 1?
A.He probably spent two months in playing the piano.
B.He began to play the piano when he was 15 years old.
C.He thought it necessary to start playing the piano early.
D.He committed himself to the piano not for financial factors.
2.Which of the following words best describes the author's relationship with the piano?
    A.Bittersweet. B.Harmonious.
    C.Painful. D.Passive.
3.What inspired the author to learn the guitar?
    A.His teacher's constant encouragement.
B.His desire for a new relationship with music.
C.His interest in strings rather than keys.
D.His talent for playing musical instruments.
4.What is the best title for the text?
    A.Practice makes perfect
    B.Love cannot be forced
C.Love is a thing that grows
D.There is no end to learning

I wasn't even planning to make money off of it—so there must have been something worth holding on to, right? ”可知,作者投身于钢琴并非出于经济原因,没打算从中赚钱。
2.答案与解析:A 推理判断题。根据第二段中“The easy guess is that I was always so purely in love with music and piano...However, ...I struggled a lot with piano.”以及最后一段中“The love and hate I've had for the piano were both planted and grown.”
根据倒数第二段中“This summer, I started learning the guitar. I deliberately wanted to learn on my own—this was just for me, to form a new relationship to music.”
根据最后一段“The love and hate I've had for the piano were both planted and grown.”

One dilemma that the super famous face is balancing the needs of privacy and recognition.
For some stars privacy is an overvalued thing. In 1919, Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford went on their European honeymoon. The two international idols had divorced their previous spouses (配偶) and were concerned about how they would be greeted. They needn't have worried. In London their car was surrounded by admiring women who pulled Mary out of the car to shake her hand, still grateful after two years for her efforts selling war bonds. In Paris they couldn't get any sleep with crowds gathering below their hotel room to sing and play for them. In Amsterdam they attended a party and were mobbed (包围) by other guests who wanted to get close to them. The athletic Fairbanks placed his wife on his shoulder and escaped through the window. Finally, they found privacy in Hamburg, where their movies were not shown because of World War Ⅰ. For an hour the famous newlymarried couple walked the streets unnoticed until the bored Mary turned to her husband and said, “Doug, I'm sick of this. Let's go back to one of those countries where they mob us.”
Joan Crawford had similar feelings. Once in the 1930s she was staying in New York getting over her breakup with Clark Gable. Tired of staying around her hotel and feeling so down she told her entourage (随从) they should go out and get some fresh air. The entourage, who had trouble keeping up with the star's quick pace, were shocked when she walked away from their planned road. “Oh my God. She's going into Grand Central Station!” Someone shouted, “Look, it's Joan Crawford! And she was mobbed. It took them thirty minutes to escape the crowd and get back to their hotel suite. Her hair disheveled (凌乱),her dress torn and her face scratched, Crawford leaned against the door out of breath. “Oh... oh my. That was wonderful. Let's do it again!”
1.What did Douglas and Mary worry about before going to Europe?
    A.Nobody would greet them.
    B.They wouldn't be welcomed.
C.Their war bonds wouldn't sell well.
D.Their schedule would be made public.
2.What does Mary's words in the second paragraph suggest?
A.Hamburg was too quiet a place for her.
B.Her movies weren't shown in Hamburg.
C.She fell ill after arriving in a new place.
D.She didn't really enjoy privacy so much.
3.What did Joan Crawford think of her being mobbed in New York?
    A.Amusing. B.Enjoyable.
    C.Dangerous. D.Embarrassing.
4.The author tells stories about the movie stars to show that ________.
A.they may feel down from time to time
B.they deserve people's love and respect
C.they need both privacy and public attention
D.they are not always popular around the world

The“Mona Lisa” may maintain her famously mysterious smile because she benefits from one of Paris' bestkept secrets: An underground cooling system that's helped the Louvre Museum cope with the unbearable heat that has broken temperature records across Europe.
With a depth of up to 98 feet and 55 miles of pipes, the littleknown “urban cold” network snakes unknowing beneath Parisians' feet, which uses electricity generated by renewable sources, is the largest in Europe and runs around the clock with a deafening noise totally inaudible above ground.
Paris City Hall has now signed an ambitious contract to triple the size of the network by 2042 to 157 miles. It would make it the largest urban cooling system in the world.
Three of the 10 hightech cooling sites lie on the Seine river. When the Seine's water is cold enough, a machine captures it and uses it to cool the system's water. The heat created as a byproduct is sent back into the Seine where it is absorbed. The chilled water is then pumped through the system's pipes to its 730 Parisian clients.
Paris' cooling sites all use renewable energy sources such as wind turbines and solar panels. French officials see this energy independence as particularly important given the threat of Russia cutting off energy supplies to Europe.
The merits of using a cooling system which uses renewable energy to operate are already being felt by sites that use them. The world's most visited museum, the Louvre, has benefited from the network since the 1990s.
“It allows us to benefit from energy with a lower carbon footprint available all year round,” said Laurent Le Guedart, the Louvre's Heritage Director. “The particularity of the Louvre Museum is that it needs to use icedcold water to correctly conserve the artwork and to control the humidity.”
Le Guedart said that the system is a moneysaver given the rising cost of energy linked to the Ukraine conflict. It operates notably in the State Room of the Pavillon Denon where the “Mona Lisa” lives. Perhaps it's why beads of sweat have never trickled down the brow painted by Leonardo da Vinci.
1.Which is TRUE about the underground cooling system in Paris?
A.It is too deep to be heard.
B.It is the largest one in the world.
C.It uses electricity for free to cool air.
D.It makes Paris the coolest in Europe.
    2.How does the system work?
A.By capturing and absorbing heat from its clients.
B.By pumping the water from the Seine to its clients.
C.By changing the water in the system for that in the Seine.
D.By pumping the water cooled by the Seine through the system.
3.What benefit does the Louvre Museum get from the system?
A.Attracting more people to see Mona Lisa.
B.Protecting its artwork from heat and humidity.
C.Getting rid of the threat of the Ukraine conflict.
D.Reducing carbon footprint with less money than before.
4.Which of the following questions can be answered by this passage?
A.Why was smiling Mona Lisa painted?
B.Why does Paris keep the system a secret?
C.How many more sites will the system have?
D.What will the system be like in two decades?

根据第二段中“With a depth of up to 98 feet and 55 miles of pipes, the littleknown ‘urban cold’ network snakes unknowing beneath Parisians' feet”可知,巴黎的地下制冷系统深达98英尺,地面上完全听不见。
根据第四段中“When the Seine's water is cold enough, a machine captures it and uses it to cool the system's water. ...”
根据倒数第二段中“It allows us to benefit from energy with a lower carbon footprint available all year round”以及“The particularity of the Louvre Museum is that it needs to use icedcold water to correctly conserve the artwork and to control the humidity.”
根据第三段中“Paris City Hall has now signed an ambitious contract to triple the size of the network by 2042 to 157 miles.

In order to enhance the security awareness of our students, and teach them what to do when a fire or an emergency happens, our school organized a fire evacuation drill this morning.
At half past nine o’clock am, we heard the alarm. Instructed by some teachers in charge, we rushed to the appointed areas in order. Afterwards, we followed the messages on the air to head for the safe place. On arriving at the playground, we stood in line. Our headmaster made a summary, attaching great importance to safety.
Not only did the drill increase our knowledge of protecting ourselves in the face of emergencies, a fire in particular, but also provided a precious opportunity to deal with them.
In 1945, a 12-year-old boy saw a beautiful brooch (胸针) in a shop window that set his heart racing. But the price — five dollars — was too high for Reuben Earle. Five dollars would buy almost a week’s food for his family.
Reuben couldn’t ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing went to his mother, Dora. Slim and beautiful, she was the center of the home, the glue that held it together. The housework was never-ending, and she struggled to support their five children but she was happy as her family and their well-being were all she cared about.
Nevertheless, he opened the shop’s weathered (风化的) door and went inside. Standing proud and straight in his flour-sack (面粉袋改做的) shirt and washed-out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, “But I don’t have the money right now. Could you please hold it for some time?
“I’ll try,” the shopkeeper smiled. “People around here don’t usually have that kind of money to spend on things. It should be kept for a while.”
Reuben respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out.
He would raise the money and not tell anybody, for he thought Mum would get surprised when she saw that brooch. On hearing the sound of hammering from a side street, Reuben suddenly had an idea that he could raise money by selling the used nail bags People built their own buildings in Bay Roberts, using nails bought in bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used nail bags were thrown away at the construction site, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece.
That day he sold two nail bags and hid the money in a rusty soda tin.
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
    Paragraph 1:
Every day after school, Reuben started his plan. __________________________________

    Paragraph 1:
Every day after school, Reuben started his plan. Cold and hungry, Reuben wandered the streets, searching for the nail bags carefully. To save more money, he even decided to deliver papers in the early morning. Exhausted and tired as he felt, he still stuck to the plan. It was the brooch in the shop window that reminded him that what he did was worthwhile. After a long time of hard work, he made it eventually
    Paragraph 2:
Finally the time came! He took out the soda tin, poured the coins out and began to count. Five dollars! His hard work paid off! Holding the soda tin firmly, Reuben rushed for the shop to buy the brooch. The moment he got the beautiful brooch, he burst through the front door and placed it in Dora’s hand. Never had Dora received such a gift. Speechless and happy, she held her son tightly into her arms, with tears welling
    up in her eyes.
