    第一节 四选一
    A
One f the mst curius features f the mdern wrld is the manner in which design has been widely transfrmed int smething meaningless. But I want t argue design shuld be the crucial blck n which the human envirnment is shaped and cnstructed fr the betterment and delight f all.
Nt surprisingly, in the absence f widespread agreement abut its significance and value, much cnfusin surrunds design practice. In sme subject areas, authrs can assume cmmn grund with readers. Other subject areas can be s difficult that h such mutual understanding exists.
Design sits uncmfrtably between these tw extremes. As a wrd it is cmmn enugh but it is full f disharmny, has innumerable manifestatins (表现), and lacks bundaries that give clarity and definitin. As a practice, design generates vast quantities f material, much f it ephemeral, nly a small prprtin f which has sustained quality.
S hw can design be understd in a meaningful sense? Design is ne f the basic characteristics f what it is t be human, and an essential determinant f the quality f human life. If things are a necessary part f ur existence, why are they ften dne s badly? There is n simple answer. Cst factrs are smetimes advanced, but the remve between ding smething well r badly can be exceedingly small, and cst factrs can in fact be reduced by apprpriate design inputs.
This bk is based n a belief that design matters prfundly t us all in innumerable ways and represents an area f huge, underutilized ptential in life. It sets ut t explre sme reasns why this is s and t suggest sme pssibilities f change. The intentin is t extend the range f what is understd by the term, and examine the depth f design practice as it affects everyday life in a diversity f cultures.
    21. What is paragraph 2 f the text mainly abut?
    A. The causes f cnfusin.B. The significance f design.
    C. The differences in subjects.D. The cmmn grund in peple.

    A. Meaningful.B. Enrmus.
    C. Shrt-lived.D. Hard-wearing.
    23. What is the bk aimed at?
    A. Reducing design inputs.
    B. Persisting in meaningful design practices.
    C. Denying previus cnceptin f design.
    D. Clarifying the cnfusin surrunding design.

I arrived hme frm wrk, my mind racing. I was scheduled t perfrm an experiment using a pricey piece f equipment, but I had spent the whle day wrrying abut the experiment which was n the tp f my agenda, and I amazingly lnged t shut ff my anxius thughts. S after dinner, I made a cup f ht chclate, stretched myself n my sfa, and pened a page. Almst instantly, my mind left behind the details f experimental design and stepped int a land f mnsters, magic dust, and man-like bears cmprising a wnderful wrld distinct frm my daily life. It was exactly what I needed.
Grwing up, I was virtually never a big fan f nvels. My classmates wuld be crazy abut the latest Harry Ptter bk, while my cpy sat cllecting dust n a shelf. Instead, I wuld chse t read thrugh the reference bks related t my disciplines fr better grades. After I started graduate schl, extracurricular reading didn’t appeal t me at all but I spent mst f my time n campus digesting research papers and textbks and my mind culdn’t handle prcessing fact-filled nnfictin bks at hme, t. S I knew that I needed t find a way t enjy reading again.
T help me stick with it, I made a New Year’s reslutin: I wuld read tw fictin bks per mnth fr the entire year. The result was an almst instant appreciatin f fictin, alng with many unexpected results including nes that have benefited my schlwrk.
What surprised me the mst was hw much I learned. Sme f the best bks I read were histrical fictinal stries happening in a realistic histrical setting. I learned abut life indifferent cuntries. as well as struggles peple there faced during difficult perids in their histries. The bks have helped me build sympathy and understanding, with an unexpected benefit: I’ve started t think mre deeply abut the diversity f issues in the scientific cmmunity and culd serve it, heart and sul.

We all knw that unpleasant feeling when we’re talking abut smething interesting and halfway thrugh ur sentence we’re interrupted. But was that really an interruptin? The answer depends n whm yu ask, accrding t new research led by Katherine Hiltn frm Stanfrd University.
Using a set f cntrlled audi clips (录音片段), Hiltn surveyed 5,000 American English speakers t better understand what affects peple’s perceptins f interruptins. She had participants listen t audi clips and then answer questins abut whether the speakers seemed t be friendly and engaged, listening t ne anther, r trying t interrupt.
Hiltn fund that American English speakers have different cnversatinal styles. She identified tw distinct grups: high and lw intensity speakers. High intensity speakers are generally uncmfrtable with mments f silence in cnversatin and cnsider talking at the same time a sign f engagement. Lw intensity speakers find it rude t talk at the same time and prefer peple speak ne after anther in cnversatin.
The differences in cnversatinal styles became evident when anticipants listened t audi clips in which tw peple spke at the same time but were agreeing with each ther and stayed n tpic, Hiltn said. The high intensity grup reprted that cnversatins where peple spke at the same time when expressing agreement were nt interruptive but engaged and friendlier than the cnversatins with mments f silence in between speaking turns. In cntrast, the lw intensity grup perceived any amunt f simultaneus (同时) chat as a rude interruptin, regardless f what the speakers were saying.
“Peple care abut being interrupted, and thse small interruptins can have a massive effect n the verall cmmunicatin,” Hiltn said. “Breaking apart what an interruptin means is essential if we want t understand hw humans interact with each ther.”
    32.What des Hiltn’s research fcus n?
    A. What interruptins mean t peple.
    B. Whether interruptin is gd r nt.
    C. Hw t avid getting interrupted.
    D. Why speakers interrupt each ther.
    33.What d participants f the study need t d?
    A. Recrd an audi clip.B. Answer sme questins.
    C. Listen t ne anther.D. Have a chat with a friend.
34.What d lw intensity speakers think f simultaneus chat?
    A. It’s imprtant.B. It’s interesting.
    C. It’s inefficient. D. It’s implite.
    35. What can we learn frm Hiltn’s research?
    A. Human interactin is cmplex.
    B. Cmmunicatin is the basis f life.
    C. Interruptins prmte thinking.
    D. Language barriers will always exist.
