    Choosing school clubs

    社团已成为很多高中或大学校园文化的一道美丽的风景线。对于许多学生来说,社团有着巨大的吸引力:尽情展示自己才能的舞台、交友的天地、生动丰富的第二课堂……那么究竟如何选择社团呢?

It's no secret that senior high can put you under pressure. For starters, you probably concentrate on completing courses and tests. It can seem like you never have any time outside of school — but it is important to do something besides studies. Joining high school clubs is a great way to achieve that goal! Here are some tips for choosing the right clubs.

    ●Know your choices

Various clubs are offered at most high schools. You can choose to join sports teams, community service clubs, debate clubs, photography clubs, or other groups. Usually, at the beginning of the school year, you will get an introduction to all the clubs. Make a list of the ones that interest you and attend their first meetings. Based on your first impressions, you can narrow down (压缩) your list to a few clubs you want to join for the school year.

    ●Follow your former activities

Of course, you can think about the kinds of activities you did in junior high and middle school and see if there is a similar activity at your senior high. For example, if you have been playing the piano since an early grade, perhaps you could join the school band. If you like to run, try out for the cross country team.

    ●Try shopping around a bit

If you don't have any ideas, try exploring a few choices. It's never a bad idea to start with as many activities as possible and drop some until you've found the right ones for you.

    ●Choose quality over quantity

While it's a good idea to take part in different types of extracurricular activities, keep in mind that quality is more important than quantity. You should not join every single club your school offers. This will make you feel tired. Instead, choose two to three clubs that you enjoy in particular, and concentrate on those.

●Consider giving back to your community

Community service clubs are very popular. If you decide to volunteer for a community service club or organization, think about what is right for you and get involved ( 参与). Take on leadership roles if you can, too.

    Notes:

    1. concentrate: v. to think very carefully about something that you are doing

    2. quality: n. how good or bad something is

    3. quantity: n. the number of something

    Good study habits for students

If you're thinking top students' learning ability is something they were born with, you're wrong. It's more likely that they are using better study strategies than you. Follow these learning tips to take the lead!

    1. Creating a study plan

Top students always plan their future success. If you are feeling tired with all the work you have on your plate, a clear study plan will be helpful.

    2. Taking study breaks

If you are staring at books too much of the time, your ability to learn will be reduced. Use your break time wisely and take a walk to give your brain energy in order to study further.

    3. Building your own study notes

It's very useful to build your own set of study notes using Mind Maps, Flashcards and other methods, which can help you discover ways to learn.

    4. Getting enough sleep

The importance of sleeping is often ignored by busy students. But top students don't miss out on their sleep.

    5. Asking questions

Top students like asking questions and show an interest in their learning. Always ask why, it's a big question for a small word!

    6. Testing yourself regularly

Revising notes regularly puts information in the long-term memory and knowledge firmly in your brain.

    7. Improving your learning through mistakes

Examine your test papers and review where and why you missed the correct answer. Analyze mistakes to build on your learning.

    8. Practicing under test conditions

Prepare for tests as if you were sitting the real test. This means you should set a timer, put your books away and answer questions to put your brain to work.

    9. Applying (应用) learning to real life

Learning is not about studying for a test. It's about understanding knowledge and what you can do with that knowledge. Develop your learning by using knowledge in real life.

    10. Following what you love

Top students develop their learning based on their interests. If you follow what interests you and are curious about this area, your motivation (动机) to learn will be improved.

Not every student is the same. The best way to create good habits is to try a variety of methods and understand what works for you.

3How to fit in a new school

Moving to a new school may make you feel curious and worried. Follow these easy steps and in no time you'll find yourself fitting in!

Take a day to appreciate your environment. You won't fit in at school if you don't know the school well yet. Ask where places are or ask for a school map.

Be friendly to everyone. Be nice to everyone, because they might just be your next teacher or friend. Treating people with kindness from the start makes a good impression.

Make new friends. Try not to be shy, and be confident. Practice your confidence by realizing your strengths. Talk to different groups of people, but don't ignore a certain group. This is your school now, so take a chance on letting your true personality shine through.

Be yourself. When people talk to you, don't be nervous. Be confident and make eye contact. Sometimes you may need to be loud so that you will get noticed, but try not to attract attention to yourself all the time.

Ask an older brother or sister who has attended for tips and information. Learn in depth about the sports here, the clubs you can join and so on.

Make sure you remember your schedule. Go over your schedule and keep which class you will be going to in mind, remember your teachers' names, and if you think you will need them, then the room numbers too.

Pay attention in class and try hard in school. If someone passes a note or whispers something to you, ignore them so you can pay attention to the teacher.

Make sure you are learning important things that will help you better fit in during this new chapter of your life.

My first day in high school

Schools in South Africa opened on Wednesday. For a number of children, this day meant the beginning of a new life. Some went to Grade R, others primary school, while some went to high school for the very first time.

Some high school students shared their experiences with us.

I have to be honest that I was scared (害怕的) of starting high school. This morning I didn't even want to come to school, but I just forced myself to. I'm happy the day is over. I managed to even make new friends and I believe I will have a bright future.

    — Tlou Matsetela

My first day in high school was very nice because I managed to make new friends and meet new teachers. Though I was scared of having to meet unfamiliar (不熟悉的) people at first, the experience turned out well.

    — Thandaza Nkuna

My first day in high school was good. It wasn't exactly what I had expected it to be. It was a new place and lots of things were different. Our timetable was strange, we had new teachers and a new classroom and we were treated differently. But I feel the rest of the year will be okay.

    — Shavir Vallabh

My first day was nice and I enjoyed the classes, but I found making friends very difficult. High school is not what I expected. I expected that I would just go up to people and ask them to be my friends, but when I saw people hanging out, I got scared of getting close to them. I'm not a shy person, but today I was shy. Going forward, I expect to get very high marks which I will work for and I also expect love and respect (尊敬) from the rest of my schoolmates.

Tips for the first day of high school

    亲爱的同学们,高中生涯即将开启,良好的开始是成功的一半。你们准备好了吗?

The transition ( 转变) from middle school to senior high can be a challenge for many students. New teachers, new classmates, and heavier assignments ( 作业) can even cause excellent students to have butterflies in their stomachs. With a little preparation and planning, however, you'll be able to defeat your first-day-of-high-school fears.

Don't miss Orientation Day. This event is usually something your school will hold towards the end of summer and maybe earlier. Not only will it make you know more about the new campus, but you can also use the day as a social opportunity.

     1. ________ Make sure to view it over the weekend before you start school. This may sound a little stupid. You will thank yourself for this small job when you feel easy and calm about knowing where you're going on the first day. So, with a friend or family member, visit your school and map out how to get to your classroom, the gym, and the cafeteria.

     2. ________ There is no doubt that you will be faced with other students you may not know, as well as new teachers. Try to be friendly and outgoing to make new friends. Try to get to each class on time. After all, some of the friendship you make may last a lifetime.

     3. ________ Have your pens, pencils, paper, or other supplies ready so that you can take notes. Most teachers won't expect you to start writing notes at once, though some probably will, and you'll want to be prepared.

Be confident. In a crowded room of students, something that makes a person stand out is his or her confidence. Confident people seem more inviting. If this is not you, make sure you are not too self-doubting, and let your personality shine through. Practice your confidence and a strong smile by realizing your advantages and remembering that everyone feels as under pressure as you do.

Just give it a bit of time and patience, and soon you will fit in with everyone else and go all out to achieve your goals.

    Notes

    1. defeat: v. to win against

    2. supply: n. necessary things

    3. personality: n. someone's character, especially the way they behave towards other people
