Let’s play games from different countries and learn about different cultures.
Otedama (Japan)
It is played alone with five small sandbags. The player kneels down behind the sandbags, throws one in the air, then uses the same hand to quickly pick up another bag and catch the first. Keep going until you’re holding all five. Too easy? Throw up all the bags and catch them on the back of your hand.
Fengzheng (China)
Fengzhengs or kites are believed to have been invented in China during the fifth century BC by Mozi and Lu Ban. By the fifth century AD, paper kites were being used for military purposes such as signaling and measuring distances. These days, locals commonly fly handmade kites to mark the arrival of spring. In Beijing, the kite string is traditionally cut to allow bad luck to be blown away by the wind.
Topfschlagen (Germany)
Germany is the world’s top exporter of chocolate, so no wonder this game is based on the sweet reward. Put some chocolate under an overturned cooking pot. Kids take turns crawling on the ground blindfolded and lightly strike whatever’s in their path with a wooden spoon. When the spoon hits the pot, the chocolate hunter gathers up the treasure.
EI Gatoy El Raton (Costa Rica)
It is a favorite group circle game for kids. One plays el gato (the cat); another is el raton (the mouse). The rest hold hands, forming a circle around the mouse. As the group skips and sings “the cat wants to get the mouse”, the cat runs outside the circle trying to touch the mouse. The players forming the circle raise and lower their arms to block the cat, and the mouse runs around to avoid being touched. When the cat “gets” the mouse, start over with a new cat and mouse.

Former Disney child star Jennifer McGill recently shared how, after her mother passed away, she went through an extremely dark period in her life.
Jennifer was born ready for the stage. She grew up in a loving home in Texas. And by age 7, she begged her mom to let her enter contests. Jennifer’s mom was uncertain. But seeing her daughter’s high energy and unshakable love of the stage, she finally supported her daughter’s wish.
Jennifer won many contests, and soon her parents were advised to have her audition (试演) for TheNewMickeyMouseClub, a Disney show. Jennifer tried out and landed her dream job.
Many of Jennifer’s costars on the show went on to run after their careers. But after many years as a Disney child star, Jennifer didn’t feel ready for Hollywood just yet.
“I just needed to grow up and grow wiser in order to be the artist I thought I was meant to be,” she said. Instead, Jennifer chose to go on to college — a decision her mother fully supported.
Jennifer’s parents were supportive throughout her career and schooling. But her mom was her champion — a constant source of support. Unfortunately, when Jennifer was 24 years old, her mom passed away.
“The biggest light and fan was gone, the person who’d reminded me that I was unique and valuable. I was kind of lost,” she said. The next several years grew very dark. She began feeling herself lonely. She felt lifeless and purposeless.
Much as Jennifer still missed her mother, she realized she should get her life back to normal. She’s now pursuing a new career in music. She also spends her time coaching young artists. She encourages them to put fame at the bottom of their list.

Many people enjoy biscuits at teatime. But people with diabetes have to be careful about eating sweet food.
Diabetes is a metabolic(代谢的)disease. If a patient's blood sugar is not well controlled, serious problems can occur. A patient may experience dizziness and fatigue, but also have kidney failure, blindness and heart disease, according to Medical News Today.
But a new research may make it possible to “treat diabetes by eating biscuits”. Researchers from Peking University and East China Normal University successfully developed a new cell using synthetic(合成的)biology technology. Their study was published in Nature Chemical Biology in November.
In their research, diabetic mice implanted with the cells can increase insulin(胰岛素)levels and lower blood sugar as long as they eat specific amino acid(氨基酸)biscuits. It only takes 90 minutes for the mice to reduce their blood sugar, which amounts to the time after an insulin injection, LiuTao, one of the authors, told Science and Technology Daily.
This kind of biscuit does not directly lower blood sugar levels, but is a “key” to insulin. The special amino acids in the biscuits help to start the insulin translation process. The end result is controlled blood sugar, according to Ye Haifeng, one of the authors.
“This unnatural amino acid is similar to the ingredients added in many health drinks and is very friendly to the human body, ” Liu told Science and Technology Daily. Maybe one day, people will need to take artificial amino acids before meals, or eat foods containing artificial amino acids suitable for diabetics, so they can control their blood sugar.
Although scientists in synthetic biology have paved the way for possible future treatments, their findings won't be ready for patients anytime soon. “Synthetic biology is still an early-stage discipline compared to the traditional diabetes therapeutic(治疗的) development timeline, with most technologies currently in the preclinical stages in the lab, ” Ira Pastor, CEO of the life sciences company Bioquark, told US News.
28. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Diseases that can affect blood sugar.
B. Blood sugar's effects on the metabolic system.
C. Severe problems caused by diabetes.
D. A kind of metabolic disease that is called diabetes.
29. How did the blood sugar of the diabetic mice decrease in the study?
A. Scientists gave them biscuits with less sugar.
B. The amino acid biscuits they ate contained insulin.
C. Scientists implanted cells that can directly lower blood sugar.
D. The implanted cells and the specific amino acids increased insulin.
30. Which of the following would Ira Pastor agree with?
A. Synthetic biology is developing quickly at present.
B. Synthetic biology proves the most effective solution to diabetes.
C. There remains a long way for this therapy to enter hospitals.
D. Many traditional therapeutic diabetes technologies are still in the lab.
31. The passage is most likely to be taken from a ______.
A. science report B. health column C. research paper D. biology essay

The possibility of self-driving robot cars has often seemed like a futurist's dream, years away from coming into reality in the real world. Well, the future is apparently now. The California Department of Motor Vehicles began giving permits in April for companies to test truly self-driving cars on public roads. The state also cleared the way for companies to sell or rent out self-driving cars, and for companies to operate driverless taxi services. California, it should be noted, isn't leading the way here. Companies have been testing their cars in cities across the country. It's hard to predict when driverless cars will be everywhere on our roads. But however long it takes, the technology may change our transportation systems and our cities, for better or for worse, depending on how the transformation is managed.
While much of the debate so far has been focused on the safety of driverless cars, policymakers should be talking more about how self-driving cars can help reduce traffic jams, cut emissions(排放)and offer more convenient and affordable choices to move around. The arrival of driverless cars is a chance to make sure that those cars are environmentally friendly and more shared.
Do we want to copy or even worsen the traffic of today with driverless cars? Imagine a future where most adults own their self-driving cars. They accept long, slow journeys to and from work on crowded highways because they can work, entertain themselves or sleep on the ride. They take their driverless car to a date and set the empty car to circle the building to avoid paying for parking. Instead of walking a few blocks to pick up a child or the dry cleaning, they send the self-driving minibus. The convenience even leads fewer people to take public transport—an unwelcome side effect researchers have already found in ride-hailing(网约车)services.
Policymakers should start thinking now about how to make sure the appearance of driverless cars doesn't worsen the transportation system we have today. The coming technological development presents a chance for cities and states to develop transportation systems designed to move more people, and more affordably. The car of the future is coming. We just have to plan for it.
- What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Self-driving cars are not allowed in the real world.
B. Driverless taxes will be seen everywhere on the road in a short term.
C. California is not alone in testing driverless cars.
D. Self-driving technology will definitely benefit transportation system.
33.According to the author, policymakers should pay more attention to __________ .
A. how driverless cars can help deal with transportation-related problems
B. how driverless cars can travel safely
C. how driverless cars can travel faster
D. how driverless cars can move more people
34.What is a possible side effect of self-driving cars?
A. Journeys to and from work become longer.
B. More and more people abandon public transportation.
C. There is no place to park them.
D. They may result in traffic jams.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Preparing Cities for Robot Cars
B. Future Technology Underway
C. Transportation System in the Future
D. Robot Cars on the Road

After reading lots of good reviews online about Mount Huangshan, we decided to check out this remarkable mountain of China. Here's a summary of our experience on climbing Mount Huangshan.
The beautiful views along the way got usrelaxed though we were tired. Especially whenwe were nearing the summit,56views were splendid!
As Mount Huangshan is known to be quite developed, we expected the climb to be relatively 57 (easy) as compared to say climbing Mount Kinabalu,58 turned out to be completely wrong. The steps were never ending and I felt like mylegs were going to break by the end of the first day! The exhaustion was probably due to our heavy backpacks as our original plan was 59 (camp) overnight at the summit. Actually, getting to the top of Mount Huangshan 60 (require) a total of 60,000 steps! We hiked for about 6-7 hours61 the first day. Though tiring, it was still an enjoyable climb as what we saw was62 (incredible) amazing! We had to be prepared for our legs 63 (ache) for the next 2-3 days though! My64 (conclude) is that it was a 65 (reward) journey to climb Mount Huangshan!

第二节:(满分25分)
In 1945, a 12-year-old boy saw a beautiful brooch (胸针) in a shop window that set his heart racing. But the price—five dollars—was too high for Reuben Earle. Five dollars would buy almost a week’s food for his family.
Reuben couldn’t ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing went to his mother, Dora. Slim and beautiful, she was the center of the home, the glue that held it together. The housework was never-ending, and she struggled to feed and clothe their five children, but she was happy as her family and their well-being were all she cared about.
Nevertheless, he opened the shop’s weathered (风化的) door and went inside. Standing proudly and straight in his flour-sack (面粉袋改做的) shirt and washed-out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, “But I don’t have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time?”
“I’ll try,” the shopkeeper smiled. “People around here don’t usually have that kind of money to spend on things. It should be kept for a while.”
Reuben respectfully touched his worn cap and walked into the sunlight. He would raise the money and not tell anybody, for he thought his mom would get surprised when she saw that brooch. On hearing the sound of hammering from a side street, Reuben had an idea—he could raise money by selling used nail bags. He ran towards the sound and stopped at a construction site. People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails bought in bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used bags were thrown away at the construction site, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece.
That day he sold two nail bags and hid the money in a rusty soda tin (汽水罐).
