Over 500 artifacts, including gold masks, bronze wares, ivories, jades, and textiles were unearthed from the site. Sanxingdui site, first found in 1929, is generally considered as one of the most important archaeological(考古) sites along the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. However, the work of excavation on the site only began in 1986, when two pits—widely believed for sacrificial ceremonies—were accidentally discovered. Investigation in the area around No. 1 and 2 pits was relaunched in October 2019, and No. 3 pit was found in December 2019, according to Lei Yu, a researcher of Sichuan Provincial Cultural Relics and Archaeology Research Institute who heads the ongoing excavation. Thirty-four research universities and research institutes have cooperated in this project. He said the new discoveries will help to better understand many unexplained findings in 1986. More excavations followed in March 2020, andfive more pits were found. And detailed research began in October 2020. Excavation capsules with hi-tech equipment were set up in the pits in order to prevent the site from further destruction. Sanxingdui site covers an area of 12 square kilometers, and its core zone of an ancient city covers nearly 4 square kilometers. According to the National Cultural Heritage Administration, studies of Sanxingdui site will become a crucial project in an ongoing program Archaeology China, which tries to explain the origins of Chinese civilization and how diverse cultures communicate and come together. 1. What can we infer about the pits from the text?( ) AA. The size of the core zone is about 1/3 of Sanxingdui site.B. The discovery of Sanxingdui site only began in 2019.C. There are 6 sacrificial pits discovered in Sanxingdui site in all.D. All sacrificial sites were discovered in the meantime.[解析] 细节理解题。 故选A项。3. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?( ) CA. Sanxingdui Discoveries Tell Us More About Ancient ChinaB. Sanxingdui Site Needed to Be ProtectedC. Sacrificial Pits Were Unearthed in Sanxingdui SiteD. Hi-tech Helped to Explore Sanxingdui Site[解析] 主旨大意题。 B There have been arguments for years over who should officially go down in history as “the inventor of the ATM”, and in 2004 a man called John Shepherd-Barron received an OBE(大英帝国官佐勋章) in the New Year Honours list for services to banking as the “inventor of the automatic cash dispenser”. But the UK government is now unequivocally saying it is James Goodfellow who invented the ATM—so his place in history is now confirmed. In the mid-1960s, Goodfellow worked at a bank. He wanted to think of a way to allow customers to withdraw cash from banks on Saturdays. “Most people worked during the week and couldn't go to the bank. They wanted a solution. The solutionwas a machine which would give money to a customer, ” he says. “I wanted to develop a cash machine and, to make this happen, I invented the PIN(personal identification number) and a plastic card. ” Goodfellow's first machines were put into use in 1967. The first one was opened at a bank in north London on 27 June, 1967. The machines became very popular, but Goodfellow only received £10 for his idea and has not made any money from it since. The cash machine is now used all over the world and, every year, there are more and more: there are now three million ATMs worldwide and there would be four million by 2020. The good news for Goodfellow is that people are beginning toknow him for his invention. The website ATMinventor. com says, “Who invented the ATM as we know it? It was James Goodfellow's idea. ” Even better for Goodfellow, his invention is in the 180-page guidebook called Life in the United Kingdom. In the section about “great British inventions of the twentieth century”, it says, “In the 1960s, James Goodfellow (1937—) invented the automatic teller machine or ‘cashpoint’. ” 【语篇导读】本文是一篇说明文。ATM机随处可见, 你知道它是谁发明的吗?本文介绍了其发明者James Goodfellow及其背后的故事。4. What does the underlined word “unequivocally” in Paragraph 1 mean?( ) AA. Clearly. B. Cautiously. C. Unwillingly. 依常理, 地位得到肯定(his place in history is now confirmed)的原因是英国政府“明确”表示James Goodfellow是ATM机的发明者。5. What was the driving force for Goodfellow to invent the ATM?( ) DA. His desire for money. B. His great interest.C. The chance of promotion. 由第二段第三、四句“Most people worked during the week and couldn't go to the bank. They wanted a solution. ”可知。6. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?( ) CA. ATMs are widely used in the world.B. Goodfellow brought fame to Britain.C. People have come to recognize Goodfellow.D. Who invented the ATM is still a question.[解析] 段落大意题。 7. What is the best title for the text?( ) BA. Who Is Goodfellow B. Who Invented the ATMC. How Was the ATM Invented D. Why Was Goodfellow Famous[解析] 主旨大意题。 综上, 全文围绕“ATM机的发明者是Goodfellow”展开, 用问句(Who Invented the ATM?) On the final day of my second year of high school, I was hit in the face with a baseball bat.
