    The Pleasures of Learning

Learning is a natural pleasure, inborn and instinctive(本能的), one of the essential pleasures of the human race. When Archimedes discovered the principle of specific gravity by observing his own displacement of water in a bathtub(浴缸), he jumped out with delight, shouting, Eureka, Eureka!I have found it; I have found it!    1

This pleasure is not limited to learning from textbooks, which are too often boring.     2     By opening a book, one can connect with a voice, and hear it speaking, mind to mind, heart to heart. As for reading books, this contains two different delights. One is the pleasure of understanding the unexpected, such as when one meets a new author who has a new vision of the world.     3

Far beyond books, learning means keeping the mind open and active to receive all kinds of experiences. Among the pleasures of learning, we should include travel, travel with an open mind, an alert eye and a wish to understand other peoples, other places, rather than looking in them for a mirror image of oneself.

4     Every new art you learn appears like a new window on the universe, which helps you acquire a new sense. Crafts, too, are well worth exploring. Most crafts contain one essential pleasure, the pleasure of making something that will last.

5     Instead of decreasing, in time, like health and strength, its returns go on increasing, provided that you aim throughout your life, as you continue learning to integrate(整合) your thoughts to make it harmonious.

A.But it does include learning from books.

B.Learning extends our lives into new dimensions(维度).

C.This shout means Archimedes enjoyed playing with water.

D.The other pleasure is of deepening one's knowledge of a special field.

E.Learning also means learning to practice, or at least to appreciate an art.

F.Man has the ability to attain happiness, and learning is the best way to achieve it.

G.The outburst from instinct and the joy of its satisfaction are possessed by all people.

    Ⅳ. 读后续写

    阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Jack first saw her when he was in a drive-through restaurant near where he works in New Jersey in early March. He'd ordered his lunch and was sitting in his car when an elderly woman, who was having trouble walking, slowly crossed in front of him. She was using two canes to support herself. Jack thought, This doesn't seem right. Jack considered giving her a ride, but his car was packed with things for work.

Jack is a wine salesman and spends most of his days driving between restaurants. Because he's in the car so much and has been involved in a couple of accidents that weren't his fault, he's got a dash camera. It recorded what happened in front of him. Jack liked to help others in trouble. When he got his food, he pulled into the car park for a couple of minutes to have a quick bite to eat. Jack was in a rush to get to his next appointment, and he turned right out of the car park and came to a train crossing.

Jack stopped at the lights and noticed the same woman was about to cross the tracks. Then Jack saw the white lights on the top of the crossing starting to flash to indicate that a train was approaching. This isn't looking good, Jack thought. His mind began to race. Then the red lights started to flash to indicate that the gates were coming down, but the woman was about to step on to the first tracks.

Jack didn't have time to think. He jumped out of his car, ran to the gates and ducked(迅速弯身) under them as they came down, almost getting hit by them. Jack heard the train's horn ring. He looked to his right and saw the train about 100 yards away approaching at speed. It was on the tracks farthest from themthe ones that the woman hadn't got to yet. Jack started to sprint(冲刺).

    注意:续写词数应为150左右。

Jack grabbed her as she approached the second set of tracks.

The manager from the fast-food restaurant came out.

    第一节

    1. B

[解析]W: Do you get up at 7 every morning?

M: Yes. I need at least 8 hours of sleep,  so I try to go to bed by 9 or 10.

    2. A

[解析]M:I don't know if Steve likes the apartment or not.

W: Yesterday, he said he liked it,  but then he didn't want to sign a contract.

M: Let's call him to confirm whether he wants it or not.

    3. C

[解析]M: The museum exhibit that our professor recommended just closed yesterday.

W: Oh, what a shame! I was really looking forward to seeing it.

    4. A

[解析]M: Mum, I'm hungry! Can I have some food now?

W: There's some nice new bread on the table, Jack. And I'm cooking you some chicken with potatoes.

    5. C

[解析]M: It was great, wasn't it?

W: Well. I thought it was too crowded and the sound could have been a lot better.

M: Yeah, but the atmosphere was excellent. If they're playing again next month, I'll go again.

W: No wonder you kept waving your arms about.

    第二节

    6. C

    7. A

[解析]M: Jane, you've used our new notebook computer for some time. What's your opinion on it?

W: Oh, it's so small and not that heavy. It is easy to use at the same time. I don't think you could make it smaller if you tried. But at $900, I'm not sure you'd get many customers. That's a lot of money for a notebook computer.

M: Any other changes you'd make?

W:I'd include a light so you can use it when it's dark.

    M: Well, thanks so much.

    8. B

    9. C

[解析]W:Hello, Tom. I have a time problem here in the US. I was invited to my professor's house. He said to come at seven. I arrived at about 7:10, but I guess it was a little early.

M: Why? What did he say?

W: He didn't say anything. He was still in the shower. His wife was cooking.

M: So they were still getting ready? Well, Americans usually show up at a party about twenty minutes late. But you weren't too early.

    10. A

    11. B

    12. C

[解析]M: Hello. Can I help you?

W: Hello. Is that Stuart Berkman? I'm calling about the delivery of a set of books that I ordered online. We spoke yesterday evening and you told me that I would have my books by ten o'clock this morning. It's eleven now, but they still haven't arrived.

M: I'm sorry, madam. Stuart is out sick today. My name is Henry Black. Could you give me your order number? I'll check the delivery on my computer.

W: I went through this already yesterday. This is really disappointing.

M: I'm terribly sorry, madam, but I can't determine the problem without your order number.

W:Well. I want to have a talk with your manager.

    13. B

    14. C

    15. A

    16. B

[解析]W: To start with, tell me about your education, please.

M: All right. I shall graduate from Columbia University next year. I major in International Trade.

W: Are you single or married?

M: I'm still single. I'd rather secure my career before settling down in a family.

W: That's the kind of man we are looking for. Our promotion work needs much travel. So, do you mind many business trips? There will be six to ten times travelling abroad a month.

M: Six to ten? Oh, that is indeed. . .

W: OK. So I would say this work is indeed demanding.

M: Er. . . I think it will be a challenge for me,  but I am glad to take it.

W: It has been pleasant to talk with you. We'll inform you of our final decision within one week.

M: Thank you, Mrs Hudson, for your interview with me. I hope to see you again.

    W: Goodbye.

    17. C

    18. A

    19. C

    20. B

[解析]M: Good evening, our lovely audience. This is Cinema Sid with brief reviews and recommendations. Here are some of this week's openings.

Hot Dog is a comedy starring David Bodine and Judy Crabbe. Unfortunately, Hot Dog is a complete waste of time. The acting is terrible. The story is boring. And for a movie that's supposed to be funny, it's not.

First Things First is a wonderful and serious play. The story is intelligent and interesting. Gene Wildman and Amy Collins play a couple who travel to Rwanda on a vacation. War breaks out, and you don't know till the end if they'll manage to get on the last plane to leave. I highly recommend this film.

Aqua-technia is no science fiction; it's based on real scientific research. It shows all the medical uses of water around the world. This beautiful film was produced and directed by a team of medical researchers.

Don't take the children to see The Wolf Children. They won't sleep for a week after they see this terrible story about human children caught by wolves and taken into the wild. The children then return to their families and become like wolves, hunting younger children in wolf packs.

A Lecture on Getting on Well with Others

Last Friday witnessed a wonderful lecture at our school lecture hall delivered by a psychologist who specializes in interpersonal communication.

He explained the relevant information about how we should get along well with others in detail.

All the teachers and students learned a lot from the lecture, having a new perspective of getting on well with others. At the end of his lecture, we showed our respect for him with applause. The lecture was also warmly received outside our school especially by students' parents.
