The passerby had nothing more to say. He had to see the foolish man and his horse run further and further northward.

Running in the right direction is far more important than running fast.

How a Voyage Changed the World

In 1519, Ferdinand Magellan started out from Spain with five ships and about 270 sailors(海员). He was going to look for treasure in the East for the Spanish king. But he chose a new way: sailing westward. His ships spent 1082 days sailing across the world and came back to Spain in 1522, over 60,000 km. They brought back lots of spices(香料)from the East. But more importantly, the first global voyage showed a fact:Earth is round. At that time, the Europeans knew little about the world outside Europe. Most people thought Earth was flat. They believed there were only three continents,namely Europe,Asia and Africa.

Magellan had many difficulties during the trip. His team used a compass to find their way. But because of Earth's magnetic field(磁场), the compass couldn't work well sometimes. The team could go the wrong way. They used hourglasses(沙漏)to tell the time. But they didn't think about Earth's rotation(自转). So, they missed a whole day when they went back to Spain at last. During the trip,they ate salted meat. They didn't have enough fresh food to eat. Many of them died of hunger and scurvy(坏血病). Magellan had five ships at first. But only one ship and 18 sailors came back to Spain in the end. The other ships broke up on the waves or sailed away. Ferdinand Magellan proved that Earth is round. His ships were the first to sail around the world.
