The arts, especially music, should be part of every school's lessons at every grade level.Students would be much smarter if they had some musical experience. They could improve their classroom skills, like paying attention and following directions.People develop all these skills when they learn music.Making music also lets children use their imagination. It provides students with a chance to try out their own ideas.
Music not only makes children better students, but also gives them something positive to do.In a music program, children can be part of a band instead of joining a gang (团伙).Parents can enjoy listening to their children's music instead of seeing them glued to a computer or TV screen. In a school band, students get to be part of a team. They can get along well with old friends and make new friends through music.
Music builds selfconfidence, too.It gives children a sense of achievement and success.Making music is something for them to be proud of, and it lets kids practice performing in front of an audience.Music gives children an opportunity for selfexpression, and that helps develop their selfconfidence.

Kathleen Dolan set up a local nonprofit (非营利组织),Artis Tree Community Arts Center, which has become a powerhouse of creativity, welcoming local artists to its classes, art exhibitions (展览),concerts, and theater productions in the village of South Pomfret.
The journey began when Ms.Dolan rented a downtown space in Woodstock, Vermont to provide music and art for young children.“That was the beginning of me noticing how valuable a community space was for parents and kids,” Ms.Dolan says.
And she always honored that community spirit, says Dail Frates, executive director of Zack's Place, a nonprofit serving children and adults with special needs, where Ms.Dolan sometimes teaches programs.Mrs.Frates remembers a time when only a couple of people showed up for a class Ms.Dolan was teaching there.Mrs.Frates apologized for the low attendance, and she says Ms.Dolan's reply touched her.“She said, ‘Well, they matter too.It doesn't matter if it's two or 20 people.Everybody matters just as much.’”
After Ms.Dolan moved her organization to a larger Woodstock location in 2006,community participation skyrocketed.More and more people came to experience the arts. She continued putting resources into it, and in 2011, gave the organization its present name:ArtisTree.
In 2013,ArtisTree's biggest development to date included the opening of the arts center and gallery in South Pomfret. For the first time and ten years into Ms.Dolan's long journey,ArtisTree had a location it owned.People can now find a wide range of classes there, including the visual arts, theater arts, music, movement classes, and creative wellness.
The arts center was also a gamechanger for this tiny village. Its theater productions drew actors and performing arts fans from around the area. The projects increased visitor traffic and gave the village a new dose of vitality (活力) it hadn't seen in many years.
1.When did Ms.Dolan begin the journey of setting up ArtisTree?
A.In 2003. B.In 2006.
C.In 2011. D.In 2013.
The journey began when Ms.Dolan rented a downtown space in Woodstock, Vermont In 2013, ArtisTree's biggest development ...ten years into Ms.Dolan's long journey, ArtisTree had a location it owned.
2.Which of the following about Ms.Dolan made Mrs.Frates feel moved?
A.She worked for Zack's Place for free.
B.She apologized for low attendances at her classes.
C.She considered every one of her students as important.
D.She was very considerate towards people with special needs.
Mrs.Frates apologized for the low attendance ...It doesn't matter if it's two or 20 people.Everybody matters just as much
3.What does the underlined word “skyrocketed” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Began slowly. B.Increased quickly.
C.Ended. D.Remained.
More and more people came to experience the arts .
4.Why did the author say ArtisTree was a gamechanger for South Pomfret?
A.It turned the villagers into arts lovers.
B.It changed how people saw local artists.
C.It changed people's lifestyle in this village.
D.It turned the village into a popular arts center.
Its theater productions drew actors and performing arts fans ...a new dose of vitality (活力) it hadn't seen in many years.
I was 11 years old when I asked my mom for a piano and piano lessons. Even I myself didn’t know how to stop the fever growing from my whole heart and soul. What interested me most was the fantastic feeling of standing in the spotlight and being admired by tens of thousands of music fans.
But we were affected by the economic decline. In fact, we could barely make ends meet at that time and even couldn’t afford to buy our favorite cheesecakes. So she said a polite “no”.
That didn’t stop me. I googled the measurements for a keyboard, drew the keys on a piece of paper and stuck it on my desk. I would click notes (音符) on an online keyboard and “play” them back on my paper one—keeping the sound they made on the computer in my head. I spent six months playing without touching a real piano. I was occupied by the thought of playing a real piano. The desire was so strong that I could hardly control my passion.
Once my mom saw that I was serious, she borrowed money and bought me 10 lessons. I still remember the first one. I was struck by how real the sound of the piano was. The sound was so pure and inviting that nobody could drag me away from the magic musical instrument. My mother stood in front of it, listening attentively to my playing with tears in her eyes. I sat my grade one after eight lessons. Once I started secondary school, we couldn’t afford lessons again. I passed grade three, then grade five, practicing only on my piece of paper.
My school didn’t offer music A-level. I found the Purcell School for young musicians. The tryouts were difficult. Some of the questions involved an evaluation of the composer or when some piece was written. I felt depressed. Would I step back? I said to myself a polite “no”.
One evening, my mom said she had a surprise for me.One possible version:One evening, my mom said she had a surprise for me. Unexpectedly, it was an electronic keyboard bought with the money she’d earned by more part-time jobs. I was wild with joy at the dream gift. Speechless for a moment, I played heartily. Melodious sounds filled our small room. At that moment, I was given amazing courage and determination to pass the challenging tryout for the Purcell School. My efforts paid off and I got the offer. At Purcell, I worked harder than anyone else. I performed to raise money and saved enough to buy my first piano.
Two years later, I left the Purcell School. Two years later, I left the Purcell School. At the graduation ceremony, I was awarded the senior academic music prize. Now I’m teaching in a top music school. I’ve held several individual concerts, but the paper piano is always kept in my mind. The truth is that everyone will have one of those hard moments when things seem to be going wrong. What we should do is to gather courage and face it bravely.
