We all love festivals. But since culture develops differently in many places, some festivals are, to us, very strange. Let's take a look at some unique festivals around the world.
Roswell UFO Festival (New Mexico, the US) The Roswell UFO Festival celebrates the anniversary (周年纪念日) of the "Roswell UFO incident (事件)"— a UFO was said to have crashed nearby. Every year in July, experts, authors, researchers and lecturers come to discuss the incident. The celebrations also include an alien parade (游行), an alien costume contest, and an alien hot-air balloon ride. |
Hemingway Days (Florida, the US) This festival has normal stuff like short-story readings and exhibits about the author. But the highlight (最精彩的部分) of the festival is definitely the Hemingway look-alike contest. Imagine walking into a bar and being greeted by 20 middle-aged men who all look alike: short and strong with thick white beards. The festival takes place in mid-July every year. |
Cheese Rolling Festival (England) It's recorded that the festival started about 200 years ago. When a round cheese is rolled, competitors run down the hill and try to catch it before it reaches the bottom. As the cheese can reach speeds of up to 112 km/h, people seldom catch the cheese. The first to the bottom wins the cheese. But running down a very steep (陡峭的) hill behind a cheese can be dangerous. |

You must know something about the Tomato Fight Festival in Spain, but you may not have heard of the Haro Wine Festival. It is less well-known than the tomato fight festival, but it is full of fun, too.
The Haro Wine Festival is held every year in June in Haro, one of the most important wine-producing towns in northern Spain. The festival dates back to the 13th century when Haro had a dispute with its neighbor because of the land. Sometimes, people from the two sides would get into a fight by pouring wine at each other. Over the years, the dispute has finally come to an agreement, but the tradition has remained and become what today we call a "wine fight".
The "wine fight" begins early in the morning. People are armed with buckets (桶), water guns and anything that can be filled with red wine, and they spray (喷洒) the wine onto their friends or strangers. Everyone is supposed to wear a white shirt during the "fight" because it is easily colored. The "fight" will last for several hours until everyone is wet and their shirts become bright purple. Then they will return to the center of the town to enjoy delicious food and drinks.

The Lantern Festival falls on the 15th day of the first month of the lunar calendar. This day always has the first full moon in the new year. Ancient people also called it Shangyuan Festival. Celebrations and traditions on this day began from the Han Dynasty and became popular in the Tang Dynasty.
Watching the red lanterns is one of the main traditions. Lanterns of different shapes and sizes are usually put on show in trees, or along river banks. It is said that sky lanterns were first used by Zhuge Kongming to ask for help when he was in trouble. Today, when the lanterns slowly rise into the air, people make wishes.
Another tradition is guessing lantern riddles (谜语). The riddles are usually short, wise, and sometimes humorous. The answer to a riddle can be a Chinese character (汉字), a famous person, or a place.
The most important thing is to eat sweet dumplings with different tastes. In northern China, they are called yuanxiao while in southern part they're named tangyuan. Because making sweet dumplings is like a game, they are usually done happily by a group of friends or family members.
In old times, the Lantern Festival was also romantic (浪漫的). Watching lanterns gave young people a chance to meet each other.
