Pancakes（煎饼）are delicious. But sometimes they are not for eating.
In Britain, school children take part in a pancake race. They run while throwing pancakes into the sky. Then they catch the pancakes and go on running. This is a traditional activity in the UK. Pancake races are interesting to watch and take part in. It has been a traditional festival for Britain people.
It is said that in 1445, an Olney woman was making pancakes. She suddenly heard the church bells ring. Realizing that she was going to be late for church, she ran out of the door quickly still wearing her apron（围裙）and headscarf and holding her frying pan with a pancake in it. In the following years, the woman’s neighbors tried to follow her, and pancake racing was born. Olney women continue this tradition more than 500 years later.
The rules are simple. Racers must wear the traditional headscarf and apron. They have to throw the pancake twice—once before starting and once after crossing the finish line. After the race, people connect through a video call to compare race times and decide a winner.
Although the women’s race is still the main event, towns now hold races for both boys and girls of all ages. Emma Evans, 14, was the winner of her age group’s race last year. She wore an apron that her grandma made for her and used a pan passed down to her from her older brother. Her family cheered her on from the sidelines.
“It’s a family tradition,” Emma says. “So it feels special.”
Preparing pancakes is also interesting. On Pancake Day, when one side of the pancake is cooked, the cook throws the pancake in the air to land—hopefully—on the other side. It doesn’t always land in the pan. I remember quite a few Pancake Days from my childhood when the pancake landed on the floor; or once, on the head of my father—but the risk is part of the pleasure.
