The South Rim

Walter Orthmann, a 100-year-old man from Brazil, has been working for 84 years at the same company. He broke the Guinness World Record for the longest career at the same company.
Walter was born in 1922, in a small Brazilian town. As the oldest son of five, his mother took him to find a job. He started working at the age of 15 to help his family with financial problems. He got his first job as an assistant. With amazing working skills, he became a successful sales manager at the age of 20.
In the 1950s, Walter often went on business. He built solid relationships with his customers. His talents and abilities won their trust and support. Some of the customers even became Walter’s long life friends.
In 2022, he turned 100, but he didn’t plan to retire from the only company he had ever worked for. He celebrated his hundredth birthday in the company with his coworkers, friends and family, holding an unforgettable party.
“When we do what we like, we don’t see the time go by!” said Walter Orthmann. “I don’t do much planning, nor care much about tomorrow. The Royal Mint has planned to open a new factory at Llantrisant in South Wales next year. It will deal with electronic waste (known as e-waste) to get precious metals for coins and gold bars. The factory will be the first of its kind in the world.
The Royal Mint is a government-owned company that makes coins for the UK and lots of other countries. Most of its coins are made from cheaper metals such as copper and tin, but the Mint sometimes makes coins and medals from precious metals like gold and silver. ________. The war broke out. Many people in Colltown suffered the loss of work and had to stay at home. It was a cold and silent night. Jack, who worked at a local bank, was walking alone on the street. His mind was on a car accident two weeks ago.

“I have only one choice left,” Jack said to himself. Over the next few days, he watched the bank carefully and had a plan.
The big day came and Jack went to his workplace as usual but with a bigger suitcase. He talked with his workmates and helped his clients solve the problems as he usually did. At 5 pm, the bank closed and staff had all gone home except him, who hid in the bathroom nervously. When the darkness fell, Jack walked out of the bathroom. Having been working at the bank for 8 years and studying the security system for the past several days, he controlled the security system in just several minutes and opened the doors of the safes with the tools in his big suitcase. After a while, Jack left the bank with a heavy bag filled with money.
The next morning, the guards went to check the safes as usual but found that the money was gone. The police was soon called to investigate the case and in order to find more, they said they had to close down the bank.
Depression soon swept the bank. “No! I have to work!”, “How long will it last?” People kept shouting anxiously. Suddenly, Old Peter, the manager, walked to the front.
