Elevators(电梯) existed as far back as ancient Rome. Archimedes was building them in 236 B. C. Those early “elevators” were simple platforms, typically used to perform tasks such as raising up water for irrigation or lifting heavy building materials. They were powered by animals, people or even water wheels.
The first modern passenger elevator was built for King Louis XV in 1743 and was called “The Flying Chair”. Installed on the outside of the king’s palace at Versailles, his elevator went from the first to the second floor. The king entered it from his balcony, and then the men stationed inside a chimney raised and lowered the elevator through the use of ropes and pulleys (滑轮). By the 1850s, elevators were powered by water pressure or steam, but they still weren’t very common. At that time, elevators that operated on a cable system were considered treacherous, because if the ropes broke, the elevator would fall fast and things on it could be damaged; more importantly, passengers would be killed by the fall.
In 1852, Elisha Otis and his sons came up with an elevator design that employed a safety device. A wooden frame at the top of the platform would snap out against the sides of the elevator well if the ropes broke, essentially functioning as a brake. Otis remarkably demonstrated (展示) this design at the 1854 New York World’s Fair. He rode the platform high into the air and then had the rope cut, but, thanks to the brake, it only fell a few inches before stopping. Ot’s founded an elevator company, called Otis Brothers &Co., which set up the first public elevator in a five-story New York department store in 1874. More electric elevators came up in the 1880s.
Two years before Elisha Otis, Otis Tufts patented an elevator design that had benches inside an enclosed car, with doors that opened and closed automatically. While Tufts’ design was very safe, it was also expensive and impractical — especially for very tall buildings. Thus, it didn’t have good market prospects. Otis Brothers &Co., today known as the Otis Elevator Company, continued to improve elevators’ safety and efficiency. Today it is the world’s largest manufacturer of elevators and escalators.

A lunch break—it’s an important and often necessary part of our working or school day. And now we’re spoilt (惯坏) with a lot of places to buy our lunch from, all offering attractive dishes and sandwiches to eat on the go.
But our appetite for buying our lunchtime fare is not just costing us money, there might be a cost in terms of damaging our planet too. Just grabbing a sandwich, crisps and maybe a cake and coffee can produce at least four items of waste. Paper boxes, cups, wrappers and plastic knives and forks are all part of our disposable feast in addition to the food waste we create. Some experts say throwing away food, which produces methane as it rots, is a bigger cause of climate change than plastics.
But regardless of what causes the most damage, the solution, according to an environmental campaign group called Hubbub, is to eat packed lunches. Tessa Tricks from the group says, “People are saying that they are buying food to take out because life has got busier.” And she says people think they are being more efficient; but she argues that it’s usually healthier and cheaper to make your own lunch. It means you can eat the things you really want and make the quantity that you actually need.
Of course, preparing your lunch is another thing to fit into your morning scramble (忙乱) of getting ready for work, so if you haven’t got time and you are going to buy lunch, an alternative that Hubbub suggests is to take your own container to a shop and ask them to put your food in it. The idea of using reusable coffee cups for hot drinks and refilling water bottles has already proved successful, so this could be another step in the right direction.

When we talk about robots, we may immediately think of sci-fi-inspired humanoid machines. While they primarily remain mythical (神话的), there are numerous more types of robots in use today. While robots are unlikely to take over the world, we may expect to see more of them in our everyday lives.
Robots are transforming the world by assisting people in performing tasks more efficiently and in ways that were previously impossible. Robots help with disaster response, improve physical abilities, serve in sectors that require human connection, and permit exploration beyond Earth’s borders. Robots are having a generally positive impact on the globe. They may be replacing some human employment, but they also improve efficiency, which improves economic activity, which in turn creates more opportunities for humans to develop new ways to earn money.
Machines and robots with the ability to learn could have an even wider range of behooves. Robots that can adapt to their surroundings, learn new procedures, and change their behavior in the future will be better suitable for more complicated activities. Elevators(电梯) existed as far back as ancient Rome. Archimedes was building them in 236 B. C. Those early “elevators” were simple platforms, typically used to perform tasks such as raising up water for irrigation or lifting heavy building materials. They were powered by animals, people or even water wheels.
The first modern passenger elevator was built for King Louis XV in 1743 and was called “The Flying Chair”. Installed on the outside of the king’s palace at Versailles, his elevator went from the first to the second floor. The king entered it from his balcony, and then the men stationed inside a chimney raised and lowered the elevator through the use of ropes and pulleys (滑轮). By the 1850s, elevators were powered by water pressure or steam, but they still weren’t very common. In 1852, Elisha Otis and his sons came up with an elevator design that employed a safety device.
