Living abroad requires a small adjustment and balancing of cultures. Moving from Scotland to Austria, the differences aren't so great, perhaps, as moving to Asia or Africa. But things are still different enough to be unsettling(使人不安的).
One of the first differences I noticed was the opening hours of shops here. During the week, supermarkets close at 7:30 p.m., at the latest. On Sundays, they aren't open at all. On my first weekend here, I wasn't at all prepared for this. I planned to go into town to pick up things I'd forgotten to bring. I wanted to get some groceries, too, after a few days of eating out. A friend had warned me that nothing was open on Sundays, but I didn't realize she was serious. So, I wandered around town, coming across shop after shop with doors closed.
I ate out again that Sunday, and I learned my lesson. To begin with, I thought it was highly inconvenient. What if I ran out of milk in the evening, or wanted to buy biscuits before bed? In the UK, I was so used to large supermarkets, which stayed open until at least 10 p.m., if not for twenty-four hours. But now, I have to buy food every Saturday. “What do people do here on Sundays?” I asked my flatmate. She just looked at me. “Nothing.” she replied.
If it's inconvenient, then there's also something nice about it. Who needs to be able to buy soup or soap or bread twenty four hours a day? No one really needs to of course. But it's nice, too, to have Sundays completely free from material worries. Sundays here are all about relaxing for hours in coffee shops and spending time with friends. Sunday is a day of rest.
People in the UK often complain, “I thought Sundays were meant to be a day of rest!”, while rushing to work, doing chores(家庭杂务) or standing in queues in shops. Well, here in Austria, it really is a day of rest. It's different, but it's a difference I can definitely get used to.
4、Where does the writer probably come from?
A.Austria. B.Britain. C.Asia. D.Africa.
5、How did the writer feel when he was told shops didn't open on Sundays?
A.Unhappy. B.Bored. C.Delighted. D.Unbelievable.
6、What do Austrians usually do on Sundays?
A.Do nothing but rest. B.Eat out with families.
C.Work hard at home. D.Do some shopping.
7、What’s the writer’s final attitude towards no shop being open on Sundays?
A.critical B. doubtful C. supportive D. opposed
Common-cold Sense
You can’t beat it, but you don’t have to join it. Maybe it got the name “common cold” because it’s more common in winter. The fact is, though, being cold doesn’t have anything to do with getting one. Colds are caused by the spread of rhinoviruses(鼻病毒), and, at least so far, medical science is better at telling you how to avoid getting one than how to get rid of one.
Children are the most common way cold viruses are spread to adults, because they have more colds than adults—an average of about eight per year. Why do kids seem so much more easily to get colds than their parents? Simple. They haven’t had the opportunity to become immune(免疫的) to many cold viruses. There are more than 150 different cold viruses, and you never have the same one twice. Being infected by one makes you immune to it—but only it.
Colds are usually spread by direct contact, not sneezing or coughing. From another person’s hand to your hand and then to your nose or eyes is the most common route. The highest concentration of cold viruses anywhere is found under the thumbnails(拇指甲) of a boy, although the viruses can survive for hours on skin or other smooth surfaces.
Hygiene(卫生) is your best defense. Wash your hands frequently, preferably with a disinfectant(消毒剂) soap, especially when children in your household have colds.
But even careful hygiene won’t ward off every cold. So, what works when a coughing, sneezing, runny nose strikes?
The old prescription(处方) of two aspirins, lots of water, and bed rest is a good place to start. But you’ll also find some of the folk remedies worth trying. Hot mixtures of sugar (or honey), lemon, and water have real benefits.
8、According to the passage, you may have a cold because of _____.
A. cold weather B. the spread of rhinoviruses
C. another person’s coughing D. washing hands too often
9、What does the underlined part “ward off” in paragraph 6 probably mean?
A. To take part in B. To be related to
C. To have the chance of D. To prevent from happening
10、According to the passage, when you are having a cold, ______.
A. you can get better only by drinking lots of water
B. you must get the cold from others’ sneezing or coughing
C. it is certainly not the same kind of cold that you had last time
D. it is always the same kind of cold that you had last time
11、What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To sell some medicine B. To talk about “common cold”
C. To introduce ways to cure cold D. To teach people to keep clean
Younger students experience school bullying more frequently than older ones, and male students are bullied more than their female students, a research found.
It also found that nearly half of students had been intentionally hit or knocked down by classmates. About 6 percent said they are bullied on campus every day. The research also found that students from ordinary schools experienced more bullying than the ones from key schools, and children from poor families are more likely to be bullied at school.
Being bullied can have a negative effect on a child’s personal development and academic performance, according to Zhou Jinyan, a researcher who led the study at Beijing Normal University. “Children being bullied will find it hard to trust others,” Zhou said. “They may often feel anxiety, anger, hatred or depression. These emotions will further destroy their ability to control their own life.”
In recent years, bullying on Chinese campuses has been frequently reported and has attracted widespread attention and concern. The most recent incident to arouse heated discussions took place in December at Beijing’s Zhongguancun No. 2 Primary School. A fourth-grade student was bullied and laughed at by classmates, causing him acute stress disorder.
The Supreme People’s Procuratorate received about 1,900 cases related to school bullying in 2016.Meanwhile, there was a notable increase in bullying reports including middle school students from 14 to18 years old.
Zhou came up with some ways to solve the problem, including improving communication between teachers, parents and students and trying to develop more harmonious relationships among children. She said it was strongly suggested that parents try to be involved in their children’s educational experience, as their presence and companionship have proved effective in reducing bullying and its negative effects.
12、Who is the most likely to be bullied according to the passage?
A.A 17-year-old boy from a rich family
B.A 10-year-old boy from a poor family
C.A 17-year-old girl from an ordinary school
D.A 10-year-old girl from a key school
13、Being bullied will cause students to go through the following EXCEPT________.
A.a lack of trust in other people B.a drop in academic performance
C.a lack of confidence in themselves D.a drop in the sense of anger
14、We can learn from the text that________.
A.bullying on campus has been reduced in recent years
B.students who enjoy parents’ companionship will be bullying-free
C.parents and schools should take further action against bullying at school
D.bullying at school usually has little effect on students when they grow up
15、The passage is likely to appear in ________.
A.a science report B.an advertisement
C.a novel D.a news report

六、读后续写
34、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
New Year was just around the corner. I was second grade then, 7 years old. One day, on my way home from school, a lady gave me a piece of paper saying that the neighborhood was asking people to give New Year presents to those who needed them. When I got home, I showed my mother the paper and said that I wanted to take part in this plan. My mother thought this was a very good idea and encouraged me to spread kindness to others less fortunate than us. She said we would become “Neighborhood Angels (天使)”.
Several days later, my mother said, “Get ready, and we will go.” “Where are we going?” I asked my mother. “I will drive you to Boots Department Store to buy something you think would be suitable for a neighborhood present.” she replied. As we went into the store, my mother gave me £20 to pay for the present. Then she said, “I’ll see you outside in the car.” She left me alone to do the shopping. I was not used to buying things on my own, as I had always been with one of my parents before. Everything seemed very strange and confusing to me, but I carried on. I asked myself what I should buy and for whom. An idea quickly occurred to me. There was a poor boy called Ralph who lived in our neighborhood.
I used to see him often without a jacket during the freezing winter months, so I decided, then and there, to buy him a warm jacket. I looked at many jackets and eventually chose a heavy blue one. The price was just within my spending limit. The assistant at the checkout asked, “Is this for someone?”, as I paid for the jacket happily. I said it was, and she wished me a Happy New Year. I felt as if I were a real “Neighborhood Angel”.

Dear Harry,
I am delighted to hear from you. You asked me in your last letter about the physical exercise in our school and here is something about it.
To begin with, a new stadium has been built up, which has well-equipped facilities. Moreover, with the stadium set up, it is big enough to hold all the teachers and students in our school. A wide range of sports events are able to be held, of which ping-pong, football as well as running competitions enjoy great popularity. All in all, I sincerely invite you to come to our school and see for yourself.

34、答案:
That evening, my mother helped me pack the jacket in beautiful paper. She wrote “To Ralph, from a person who cares about you” on it, after which she drove me over to Ralph’s house in the neighborhood. My mother parked down the street. I took a deep breath and dashed to his front door. Seeing no other people notice us, I threw the New Year’s present down on his steps, pressed his door bell and then hid in the car.
My mother and I waited breathlessly for Ralph’s front door to open and finally it opened. Out came Ralph. Seeing the jacket, he looked astonished and then called his mother to come out. After hearing them say “Thanks” loudly, I felt very proud of what I had done. At that time I decided to be a good person spreading kindness forever. It was on that night that I realized the truth that he who has no kindness in his heart will never find kindness in someone else.
