At first glance, the business wrld is n place fr yung wmen, as my cfunders and I have been tld n many ccasins. In spite f this pessimistic view f wmen's pprtunity in business, we three cllegeage girls with zer experience in business started ff with a highly ambitius gal: t start a seaweed farm in Nrth Carlina, and grw as much seaweed as pssible t help reduce the carbn emissin (排放) and nutrient pllutin frm agricultural surces.
In the beginning, ur ideas were either ignred r scffed by the researchers frm whm we sught help and advice. But we carried n with ur research even if thers wuldn't prvide us with answers. We didn't dread trying t wrk them ut urselves. We discvered which species culd grw in warmer water, and we'd identified ptential markets int which we planned t sell the prduct. We've spent the last tw years setting up the first seaweed farm in NC, applying fr a patent (专利) and cmpeting with five final teams in frnt f the United Natins fr ne millin dllars.
Despite all f ur effrts, many industry experts remained unwilling t take us seriusly. But as ften happens in business, the same characteristics we were ignred fr were, in reality, ur biggest cmpetitive advantages. Our age gave us the strength t bunce back frm failure, and ur backgrund as envirnmental scientists, rather than businesswmen, helped us find new marketing pprtunities. Fr every 10 farmers wh claimed nbdy wuld ever want t feed their cws seaweed, we fund ne wh was interested. Fr every 15 csmetics prducers wh refused t answer ur cld calls, we stuck t the ne with an interesting idea fr a seaweed ltin (乳液).
Over the curse f ur early business develpment effrts, we have had access t a wealth f resurces, prgrams, and individuals wh wrk cnstantly t help us succeed. By staying fcused n bringing ur ideas t light,ur team has demnstrated that entrepreneurship is exactly the right place fr the hpeful.
